Alice Falls

Apollo Beach
UnofficialApollo Beach is the northern, Volusia County district of Canaveral National Seashore, a federally protected barrier island south of New Smyrna Beach on Florida's Atlantic coast. A park road runs south from the entrance station past five numbered parking areas with boardwalks over the dunes; nude sunbathing happens on the sand south of parking area 5, the last lot before the road ends. A long-standing understanding between naturist groups and rangers dating to 2000 asks people to stay covered until about 150 yards south of that boardwalk, although nude visitors are often seen closer. South of there the beach continues as Klondike Beach, roughly a dozen miles of undeveloped shore with no road access, so the farther you walk the emptier it gets. The beach is wide, soft, pale sand backed by sea oats and dunes, with no shade, no buildings and no vendors. It draws fewer people than Playalinda at the Brevard end of the seashore, mostly because parking is so limited. Volusia County has never passed a public nudity ordinance, which is why this end of the seashore has a calmer legal position than Playalinda. Wildlife sightings (shorebirds, wild hogs, armadillos) are common on the drive in.

Assateague Island
UnofficialAssateague Island National Seashore spans Maryland and Virginia on the Atlantic coast. The historic unofficial nude beach was on the Virginia side, at the northern end of the Virginia district. Accomack County passed a no-nudity ordinance in 1984, the summer before that year's National Nude Weekend, and more than 50 naturists were arrested that year, according to a 1985 Virginia Living article. Naturists challenged the ordinance on the ground that the beach is federal property, but the challenge was dropped. A 1991 National Park Service policy memo says the Park Service will neither encourage clothing-optional use nor designate areas for it. A 2005 report describes a nudist lobbying effort for a Maryland-side beach, which a local delegate opposed. The coordinates stored for this place point to the Maryland side. The sources we read do not describe a tolerated nude area on the seashore today, and the NPS page we opened does not mention nudity.
Baker Beach
OfficiallyBaker Beach is a roughly half-mile sweep of sand in the Presidio on San Francisco's western shore, running south from Golden Gate Point, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area run by the National Park Service. The far northern end, closest to the Golden Gate Bridge and below the serpentine bluffs, is where clothing-optional sunbathers traditionally gather; the National Park Service itself notes this. The rest of the beach is a mixed public beach used by families, dog walkers, photographers and picnic groups, so the dividing line matters: nude visitors keep to the north end and cover up before walking back toward the parking lot and picnic area. The beach has coarse sand, cold water and a big Pacific swell, with strong undertow and rip currents that make swimming unsafe. The view of the bridge from the nude end is one of the best in the city. Historic Battery Chamberlin, a 1904 coastal gun battery, sits behind the beach, and the north end was the original site of Burning Man from 1986 to 1990. Fog is common in summer; the warmest, clearest days tend to come in September and October.
Baker Beach (Trinidad)
InformalBaker Beach, often called Baker's Beach, is a small crescent cove on the Humboldt County coast just south of Trinidad, reached from Scenic Drive, the old coast road between Trinidad and Westhaven, about 12 miles north of Arcata. It is not the better-known Baker Beach in San Francisco. Thick coastal greenery screens the cove from the road above, and the shore is made of fine pebbles rather than sand, with tide pools at low tide and agates to look for along the waterline. Driftwood piles up at the back of the beach. Nude use has been customary here for decades and is tolerated rather than designated: a 2010 San Francisco Bay Guardian piece described a mixed crowd of nude and clothed visitors, mostly young people from the Arcata area plus the odd family, usually a dozen or fewer, with more on the hottest days. Fog is common in summer, the water is cold, and the surf, rocks and currents make swimming risky. There is no lifeguard and no facilities.
Bare Ass Beach (Green River)

It is an informal spot rather than a beach in the usual sense: a short strip of sand on the bank, a shallow riverbed of mixed stones and pebbles, and a second sandy patch on the far bank reached by wading. Regulars have built stone seats, walkways and balanced rock sculptures. The water is clear, cool and mostly shallow, from calf to above knee depth in the ford, with a still pool behind the beach holding small fish and frogs. It is secluded in woodland and draws skinny-dippers and nude sunbathers, which gave it its name, along with clothed locals cooling off. Users are generally described as respectful and the site as clean. There are no facilities of any kind and much of the surrounding land is private.
Bartlett Lake
InformalBartlett Lake is a reservoir on the Verde River in the northern Tonto National Forest, about 20 miles east of Carefree and roughly 45 miles northeast of central Phoenix, at about 1,800 feet elevation. It is a busy boating, fishing and swimming lake surrounded by Sonoran desert hills and saguaros, with camping and picnic sites concentrated on the west shore along North Lake Road. Arizona travel guides have long said that some visitors swim and sunbathe nude here, in an informal 'nude beach' area away from the main recreation sites, and outdoor guides warn that you may meet nude sunbathers. None of them pins down an exact cove, and nude use is tolerated rather than sanctioned. Shorelines are a mix of gravel, sand and rock, and water levels fluctuate with releases, sometimes sharply. Summer weekends are crowded with boats, and the water can be colder than expected.

Beeks Bight
InformalBeeks Bight is a small parking area and trailhead on the western shore of Folsom Lake, inside the Granite Bay day-use area of Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, roughly 25 miles northeast of downtown Sacramento. Folsom Lake is a reservoir on the American River, so the shoreline is a mix of decomposed-granite sand, granite boulders and oak-studded slopes, and how much beach is exposed depends on the water level in a given year. The nude use linked to this place has never been at the lot. A Sacramento News & Review feature described walking about half a mile north along the shoreline from the Beeks Bight lot to the second cove, where a small, hidden sandy spot had 'Nude Beach' painted on the rocks; the writer called it Bare Cove and noted that some regular lake users had never heard of it. There is no newer reporting that nudists still use the cove, and nudebeachmap lists it as unverified with low ratings. Treat it as an occasional, informal spot where you may well be alone or among clothed hikers and boaters, not as an established nude beach. The Doton's Cove Trail starts at the same lot and runs along this part of the shore.

Black Rock Beach
InformalBlack Rock Beach is a remote stretch of shoreline on the south coast of Block Island, Rhode Island, west of Mohegan Bluffs and below the Rodman's Hollow conservation area. It takes its name from a large dark rock at the waterline, and it sits under steep clay and glacial bluffs. The beach is narrow and mostly cobbles, boulders and coarse sand, with a few flatter patches to lie on, and the surf can be good for surfing when the swell lines up. It is one of the quietest beaches on the island because there is no road access. It has a long reputation as a clothing-optional spot; Rhode Island Monthly now describes it as formerly clothing-optional, with some people still going nude. Visitors are a mix of naturist couples, hikers, surfers and photographers, usually in small numbers. There is no shade and no facilities, and the descent is challenging. A separate, better-known clothing-optional section lies below Mohegan Bluffs to the east.
Black Sands Beach, CO Section
InformalBlack Sands Beach is a narrow cove of dark, coarse sand below the cliffs of the Marin Headlands, just west of the Golden Gate on the Marin side, within Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It sits below Conzelman Road between Hawk Hill and Point Bonita, with views back across the Golden Gate to San Francisco and Baker Beach. The beach is reached only by a steep trail and stairs, which keeps numbers down compared with San Francisco's city beaches. Nude sunbathing is an informal custom rather than a designated use: nudists usually settle at the farther ends of the beach, away from the bottom of the stairs, and guides differ on which end is favoured, so look for where others are already undressed. The middle near the trail is mostly clothed day-trippers, picnickers and photographers. The beach is short and gets much smaller at high tide, when waves can reach the cliff base in places. The water is cold Pacific with strong currents and is not suitable for swimming. Fog and wind are common even in summer, so the best nude days are the occasional warm, clear ones, often in late summer and autumn.
Black's Beach
UnofficialBlack's Beach lies at the foot of 300-foot sandstone cliffs between La Jolla Shores and Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego, below the Torrey Pines Gliderport and the UC San Diego campus. In the mid-1970s it was briefly the only legal public nude beach in the country, until the city banned nudity on its portion in 1977. Today nude use continues on the northern, state-managed part: the clothing-optional stretch starts roughly 100 yards south of the Gliderport trail and runs about a mile north toward Flatrock Point. The southern part, managed by the City of San Diego, is clothed and is one of Southern California's most powerful surf breaks, focused by the Scripps submarine canyon just offshore. The beach is wide sand below crumbling cliffs, with no shade, no buildings and no services. Because every route in is either steep or tide-dependent, it is rarely crowded on the nude stretch, and you can find long empty sections. Major bluff collapses in 2023 and 2024 are a reminder to keep well away from the cliff base.
Blind Creek Beach
OfficiallyBlind Creek Beach is on South Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie County, on Florida's Atlantic coast, about eight miles south of Fort Pierce along A1A and immediately north of the St. Lucie nuclear power plant. It is part of the county's Blind Creek park, and on June 2, 2020 the St. Lucie County Commission officially designated a section of it, about 36 acres, as clothing-optional, the county's first. Naturists had used it for decades before that. The designated nude stretch runs for more than a mile between two parking areas, and visitors can continue south along the shore below the high-water line past the power plant property for a much longer walk. The beach is natural and undeveloped: soft sand, sea oats and dunes with no buildings, no shade, no lifeguards and no vendors. It draws a relaxed mix of local naturist regulars, couples and visitors, and the Treasure Coast Naturists group supports the beach.
Boaters Beach
InformalBoaters Beach is one of the small coves strung along the Nevada east shore of Lake Tahoe below State Route 28, south of Sand Harbor, on the same trail system as Chimney Beach, Secret Cove, Creek Beach and Whale Beach. It sits just past Secret Cove and only a short distance north of Creek Beach, from which it is split by a granite outcrop. The beach is a pocket of coarse sand framed by big rounded boulders and Jeffrey pines, and in most years it keeps some sand even when lake levels drown the neighbouring coves. Boats often pull up along its shoreline in summer. Unlike Secret Cove, this is not a mainly nude beach: on warm summer days the large majority of visitors are clothed sunbathers, families and boaters, and nude use picks up mostly when the crowds thin, late in the day or outside peak weekends. The water is very clear and cold all summer. There are no facilities of any kind on the beach.
Boca Chica Beach
UnofficialBoca Chica Beach is a narrow strip of shoreline at the dead end of Boca Chica Road on the Atlantic side of the Lower Keys, about 12 miles from Key West, next to Naval Air Station Key West. The road used to continue along the shore but was abandoned and has crumbled, leaving broken asphalt, rocky coral rubble, patches of sand, and mangroves; Monroe County lists the spot as a public beach park. It is not a classic swimming beach: the water is shallow, with rocks and seaweed, and the shoreline is narrow. For decades it has been the closest thing the Keys have to a nude beach, with locals and visitors walking away from the road end to sunbathe nude in the more secluded stretches. Older reports mention a handmade 'clothing optional beyond this point' sign by the barricade. Use has always been informal, and the area right next to the Navy base is off limits. Expect a small, mostly adult crowd, no shade, and no facilities. Several guides note that it is less used than it once was and that people sometimes report it as closed.

Bonny Doon Beach
UnofficialBonny Doon Beach is a sandy cove on the Santa Cruz County coast, on the west side of Highway 1 opposite Bonny Doon Road, north of Santa Cruz and just south of Davenport. It is one of the beaches of Coast Dairies State Park, which State Parks runs as part of Wilder Ranch. Sandstone cliffs ring the cove and a large rock on the sand roughly divides it: clothed visitors use the southern part near the access path, while the more secluded north end beyond the big flat-topped rock has been the traditional clothing-optional area for decades. A 2010 visit counted several dozen people at the north end, almost all nude, with couples and singles of mixed ages and more men than women. The beach is broad and gently sloping but drops off sharply at the waterline, and rip currents in the cove make swimming dangerous. The northern cliffs shed rocks, so keep towels well back from the cliff base. Winter storms can strip the sand and leave a rocky shelf until it rebuilds. Fog and wind are common on summer mornings.

Carmel Meadows Beach

It is a coarse-sand cove backed by bluffs, and a handful of regulars sunbathe nude here on warm days. Most suited visitors stay at the main Carmel River beach to the north. The surf is powerful and drops off steeply, with dangerous undertow, so swimming is not advisable. Fog and wind often roll in, even in summer.
Casper Beach
InformalCaspersen Beach is a long, natural Gulf-coast beach south of Venice, known for fossil shark teeth and for its undeveloped southern end, where nude sunbathing has gone on informally for years. The sand is mixed with shell, and the shoreline grows wilder and emptier the farther south you walk from the park. It is not a designated nude beach. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office treats nudity as illegal and has run undercover stings here aimed at lewd behaviour, so stay discreet and well away from the main beach.
Cherry Grove
InformalCherry Grove is a car-free hamlet on Fire Island, the barrier island off Long Island's South Shore, and one of the oldest LGBTQ resort communities in the United States. Its ocean beach is a wide, soft-sand strand backed by dunes and maritime forest, with open Atlantic surf that can be rough. Nudity is not official here but has been customary for decades. Most of it happens toward the western end of the community, west of the Sand Castle restaurant toward the East and Lewis walk, and on the stretch between Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines to the east. Fewer than half of beachgoers undress, especially near the centre of town. The crowd is mainly gay men and other LGBTQ visitors, with some straight couples, nudists and families. The wooded strip between the two communities, known as the Meat Rack, is notorious for cruising and sex; nudists who want a relaxed beach day stay on the sand. Restaurants, bars and clubs cluster near the ferry dock, which is loud at night.
Chimney Beach
InformalChimney Beach is a boulder-studded sandy beach on the Nevada east shore of Lake Tahoe, named after the stone chimney of an old caretaker's cabin. The water is very clear, and the backdrop is pine forest. Nude sunbathing here is sporadic and found mainly among the rocks at the quieter ends. The well-known clothing-optional beach, Secret Cove, is a short walk north along the shoreline trail. There are no facilities on the sand, so bring water and pack out what you carry in.
College Cove Beach
InformalCollege Cove is a half-moon of sand about a quarter mile long just north of the town of Trinidad on the Humboldt County coast, part of Trinidad State Beach. Forested bluffs of spruce and alder rise behind it and sea stacks stand offshore. A rocky point splits the beach into two coves, and at high tide you cannot walk between them. The southern cove has the reputation for nude sunbathing: a 2010 Bay Guardian nude-beach guide described about 50 visitors a day there, roughly half nude, mostly young students from nearby Humboldt State (now Cal Poly Humboldt). Clothed families and dog walkers use the beach too, and current tourism guides present it as an ordinary family beach, so nude use is a local custom rather than the norm. The water is very cold and there are no lifeguards. Fog is common on the North Coast, and the warmest, clearest days usually come from late summer into autumn.
Collins Beach
OfficiallyCollins Beach is a mile-long sandy beach on the Columbia River shore of Sauvie Island, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Portland, inside the 12,000-acre Sauvie Island Wildlife Area run by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. It sits at milepost 11 on Reeder Road, a quarter mile past where the pavement ends, and is one of Oregon's two official clothing-optional beaches (the other is Rooster Rock). The clothing-optional area runs for about 1,400 feet south of the private-property signs at the north boundary; ODFW asks nude users to stay inside the posted limits, and straying onto the clothed North Unit Beach next door has caused complaints from landowners. The beach is fine river sand backed by cottonwoods, with views of passing cargo ships and across to Washington. River levels change the beach width through the year, and in early summer snowmelt can leave it narrow. Ship wakes can be strong. It draws a relaxed, local mix of regulars, couples and groups of friends, and has been used by nudists since at least the 1970s.
Creek Beach
InformalCreek Beach is a small cove on the Nevada east shore of Lake Tahoe, one of a string of beaches reached by a single trail system off State Route 28 south of Sand Harbor, alongside Chimney Beach, Secret Cove, Boaters Beach and Whale Beach. It lies at the south end of Boaters Beach, separated from it by a large granite outcrop, Like its neighbours it is a mix of coarse granite sand and big rounded boulders and very clear, cold water. Secret Cove, just north, is the best-known nude beach on the east shore; Creek Beach is also used clothing-optional and is listed as dog-friendly. Visitors grill, swim and play volleyball and paddleball. It gets busy on summer weekends. There is no lifeguard. In 2019 a confrontation between nude men and deputies prompted the Washoe County Sheriff's Office to sweep the east-shore beaches and tell nude visitors to dress.
Cummington Beach
InformalCummington Beach is the name used by nude-beach listings for an informal riverside sunbathing spot on the Westfield River in the hill towns of western Massachusetts, between Cummington and Chesterfield. The stored location is on the East Branch just downstream of Chesterfield Gorge, where the river runs through state forest and Trustees land with a gravel riverside trail. The listing describes a wide beach of rounded river stones with rocky, wooded edges, sun for most of the day and shade at the forest margins, reached by fording a shallow channel over slippery rocks. The river is usually shallow and slow but can be cloudy and rises quickly after rain. Visitors are mostly adults, singles and couples, with a noticeable male presence, and it is busier on warm weekends. Note that swimming is prohibited in Chesterfield Gorge itself. There are no facilities, and only one directory source documents nude use here.
Denny Blaine Beach
OfficiallyDenny Blaine Park is a small, roughly two-acre park on the western shore of Lake Washington in Seattle's Denny-Blaine neighbourhood, surrounded by some of the city's most expensive homes. It is Seattle's best-known nude beach and has been a gathering place for nonsexual nudity for decades. The 'beach' is a grassy lawn rather than sand, sloping down to an old stone wall that marked the lakeshore before the Lake Washington Ship Canal lowered the lake by about nine feet in 1917; people sunbathe on the grass and swim off the wall into fresh water. There is no lifeguard. Since 2025 the park has been formally split: a fenced lower area by the water is signed clothing-optional, while the area west of the fence, by the entrance, is clothing-required. The park is also an important space for Seattle's queer, transgender and gender-diverse community, which the City Council recognised by resolution. A volunteer group, Friends of Denny Blaine, publishes behaviour guidelines and asks visitors to keep it 'nude, not lewd'. Expect a busy, social crowd on warm summer afternoons and a quieter scene early in the day.

Dogfish Beach
InformalDogfish Beach is a small, secluded strip of shore on Samish Bay below Chuckanut Drive (SR-11), between Larrabee State Park and the Skagit County flats, south of Bellingham, Washington. It sits between the bay and the BNSF railway line that runs along the foot of the Chuckanut cliffs. The beach is a mix of rock, cobbles and sand with sharp shells, opening onto shallow tidal flats; the water is noticeably warmer than most Puget Sound beaches because it spreads over the flats on a rising tide. The first section is rockier and more private, while a sandier stretch further along has easier water access. Volunteers maintain a small garden, steps and fire pits. It is used clothing-optional, mainly by local regulars, couples and older locals, often with dogs off leash, and reviewers report that on some days everyone present was nude. It is much quieter than Wreck Beach across the border. The key hazard is the railway: reaching the beach means walking about half a mile along the tracks around a blind curve.

El Matador State Beach
InformalEl Matador State Beach is one of three small pocket beaches that make up Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach in western Malibu, along with El Pescador and La Piedra, on the Pacific Coast Highway. It sits below a sandstone bluff about 150 feet high and is known for its sea stacks, arches and small sea caves, which make it one of the most photographed beaches in Southern California, especially at sunset. The beach is a narrow band of sand between rock formations that shrinks sharply at high tide. It is a regular, clothed state beach, busy with photographers and sightseers. Some guides report that nude sunbathers occasionally use the quieter corners among the rocks, but nudity is not permitted and there is no established nude section. The water has surf and currents, and dogs are not allowed.
Frenchman's Hole

Fuller's Beach
InformalFuller's Beach is a small, isolated cove on the Big Sur coast of Monterey County, California, tucked below Highway 1 near Grimes Point, a few miles south of Nepenthe and roughly a mile south of Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, just before the highway bends inland at Grimes Canyon. It is a windswept, rugged spot backed by steep bluffs, with a narrow strip of coarse beige sand, pebbles and plenty of rock rather than a broad sandy beach. The cove is primarily a surf break, and on days with good waves most of the people present are surfers in the water; nude sunbathers are usually only a handful, using the more out-of-the-way parts of the shore. There is no designated nude area: nude use is informal and low-key. The surf is powerful with strong currents and a rocky shoreline, so it is not a swimming beach for casual or inexperienced swimmers. Seals, sea lions and, in winter and spring, migrating gray whales can be seen offshore. There are no facilities of any kind.
Garrapata State Park

Garrapata Beach, the park's main sandy beach, sits below the highway north of the Garrapata Creek bridge, with coves, sea caves, a creek lagoon and wildflower-covered bluffs. Naturists traditionally gathered at the far north end of the beach, away from the main access trail. That use has shrunk: a 2010 Bay Guardian survey found only a few nude sunbathers left, mostly gay men, who dressed when rangers approached, and recent travel listings say nudity is no longer allowed. Expect a mostly clothed beach with, at most, a handful of discreet nude users at the northern edge. The setting is spectacular but harsh. The centre of the beach is often very windy and can feel much cooler than the sheltered ends, fog is common, and the cold, powerful surf is dangerous; people have drowned here and others have died scrambling down unofficial cliff paths.
Glass Bar Nude Beach
InformalGlass Bar Island (often written Glassbar Island) is an island in the Willamette River on the south-eastern edge of the Eugene-Springfield area of Oregon, near Seavey Loop Road. It is state-owned land set up as a river-access-only park, and local people have used it as a clothing-optional spot since about the 1960s, making it one of the longest-running informal nude areas in the Willamette Valley. What passes for a beach here is river shoreline: gravel bars and banks along the Willamette, good for sunbathing, wading and fishing, with a few picnic tables, barbecues and posted park rules. Regulars include anglers and boaters who come to fish or sunbathe nude, and some volunteer on trash clean-ups and invasive-plant removal. Oregon State Parks says the island is maintained for environmental purposes rather than public use and is not sanctioned by the state as clothing-optional, so it is a community-tolerated spot rather than an official nude beach; Lane County has no officially designated nude beach. Because the old walking route is now closed, numbers are small and the island is usually quiet.

InformalGray Whale Cove State Beach is a small sandy cove, roughly 800 feet long, at the foot of steep cliffs on the San Mateo County coast, just north of Montara and south of the Devil's Slide headland on Highway 1. Clean light sand, rock outcrops at each end and clear, very cold water make it one of the prettiest pocket beaches south of San Francisco. Nude use dates back to the Bay Area naturist scene of the 1960s, and before California State Parks took over, the cove was run by a private licensee as a fee-charging clothing-optional beach. Today naturists gather at the north end, a section separated from the main beach by rocks and known locally as Edun Beach; the rest of the cove is used by clothed beachgoers, so turning left at the bottom of the stairs keeps you out of the nude area. There is no shade, no concession and no water on the beach, only a small picnic area on the bluff. Surf and rip currents are strong and the water is cold year-round, so most people sunbathe rather than swim. Gray whales pass offshore during their spring migration.

Gunnison Beach

It is the largest and best-known nude beach in the northeastern US, used by naturists since the late 1970s, and on hot summer weekends it can draw several thousand people. The National Park Service describes it as clothing-optional; its wider guidance says the traditional nude-use area is part of Area G (South Gunnison) and that nudity outside that zone may be treated as disorderly conduct. The beach is broad, soft sand facing the Atlantic, with views north to the Verrazzano Bridge and Manhattan's skyline across Lower New York Bay. The crowd is diverse in age, ethnicity and orientation. Since about 2021 the park has banned alcohol on all Sandy Hook beaches and limited tents and screens, after complaints about loud music and partying; regulars report a calmer atmosphere since. There are no lifeguards at Gunnison.

Hagmaier Pond South
InformalHagmaier Pond South is the southern of two small ponds in the pastoral Olema Valley of west Marin County, California, close to Highway 1 about six miles south of Olema and next to the Hagmaier (Olema Valley) trailhead, where Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area lands meet along the San Andreas Fault valley. The setting is open grassland and former ranch pasture between Inverness Ridge and Bolinas Ridge, with no sand at the water's edge. Hagmier/Hagmaier Pond has a long reputation among Marin locals as a place for a skinny-dip on hot days; a former Marin County supervisor told a newspaper in 2010 that he had swum nude there, along with at Red Rock Beach, Bolinas and Mount Vision Pond. Beyond such passing mentions, little has been published, so expect a quiet, informal spot with no facilities, cattle-country surroundings, cold-ish water outside late summer and hikers and cyclists using nearby trails.

Haulover Beach
OfficiallyHaulover Beach is the oceanfront of Haulover Park, a Miami-Dade County park on the barrier island between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach, just north of Baker's Haulover Inlet. The northern 0.4 mile of its 1.5-mile shoreline, between lifeguard towers 12 and 16, is an officially recognised clothing-optional beach, marked by snow fencing and permanent signs at each end. A local naturist group started using the area in 1991 and the county put up official signs in 1993. It is often described as the busiest nude beach in the US. The sand is golden and wide, the water warm and usually calm, and the beach has year-round lifeguards, which is rare for a nude beach. The county markets it as family-oriented, and the crowd is very mixed: local naturist families, couples, tourists from Europe and South America, and a strong gay presence toward the north end. Volunteer beach ambassadors in green safari hats explain etiquette. Condo towers rise immediately north, so it is anything but secluded.
Herring Cove Beach
InformalHerring Cove Beach is the west-facing National Park Service beach at the very tip of Cape Cod, a short ride from Provincetown, and one of the few places on the US East Coast where you watch the sun set over the sea. It is part of Cape Cod National Seashore. The main beach by the parking lot has seasonal restrooms and a snack bar, and lifeguards in summer, and is a busy family and town beach. The bay water here is generally calmer than on the outer Atlantic beaches. Walking south (left) from the lot, the beach becomes quieter and backed by dunes; this end has long been the gay and lesbian section of the beach, and historically it was where nude sunbathers went. Since the 1970s nudity has been banned across the National Seashore and rangers, partly to protect the dune grass from people wandering in, do write tickets. Today some visitors still sunbathe nude discreetly far to the south, but it is not a sanctioned nude beach.
Hippie Hollow Park
OfficiallyHippie Hollow Park is a 109-acre Travis County park on the eastern shore of Lake Travis, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Austin, and the only public clothing-optional park in Texas. The county states plainly that nudity is acceptable but lewd behaviour is not, and entry is restricted to adults 18 and over, so it is not a place for families with children. There is no sand beach: the shoreline is steep, terraced limestone ledges and boulders dropping into clear green lake water, and people sunbathe on the flat rock shelves or on towels among the cedar and oak scrub above. A designated swimming area and a hiking trail run along the shore, and boaters anchor off the coves on summer weekends. Lake levels vary a lot with drought and flood, which changes how far you scramble to reach the water. Zebra mussels are now present on the rocks, so water shoes are wise. Around 85,000 people a year visit, a mix of committed naturists, Austin locals, students and curious first-timers, and it gets busy on hot weekends.
Hole In The Wall Beach

It takes its name from the large sea arch at the south end of Panther Beach: the only way in is to walk through that rock tunnel from Panther Beach, and only at low tide. Beyond the arch is a sandy cove backed by tall cliffs, more sheltered and far less visited than Panther itself. Because it is hidden and hard to reach, it is used as a clothing-optional beach, especially on warm days, though nobody is required to undress and clothed visitors are common. The Pacific here is cold and powerful, waves break hard against the arch, and the incoming tide can cut the cove off from Panther Beach, so timing is essential. There are no facilities, no shade beyond the cliffs, and the Central Coast climate means summer highs often stay around the low to mid 70s °F with frequent fog.
Howell Park

The land was bought in 1907 and later renamed after the street. It is little more than a steep wooded slope dropping to a small strip of gravel and grass at the water, with swimming straight into the lake; there is no sand to speak of. Because it faces east it loses the sun by mid-afternoon. It has long been used clothing-optional and historically more by gay men than Denny Blaine, which is the more mixed and better-known nude beach next door. The crowd is mostly male, LGBTQ-friendly and small. It sits in a quiet residential area, and visitors are asked to keep things low-key. There are no facilities; the nearest toilets are at the larger beach to the south. Lake Washington is warmest from July to early September.
Hoyt's Crossing
InformalHoyt's Crossing is a historic river crossing on the South Yuba River about seven miles north of Nevada City in the Sierra Nevada foothills, upstream of the Highway 49 bridge in the South Yuba River State Park corridor. The river here runs clear and cold between large granite boulders, and at the crossing it widens into a good-sized swimming hole with a broad sandy beach, opposite the old Miner's Tunnel. The clothing-optional area, usually called Hoyt's Beach, sits at the end of a short right-hand spur off the Hoyt Trail roughly two-thirds of a mile from the trailhead; signs on the approach warn that visitors may encounter nudity. The setting is mixed sand and smooth granite slabs rather than a long strand, with little shade beyond the oaks and pines on the banks. Nude sunbathing and swimming along the South Yuba has a long local tradition, and Hoyt's is one of its best-known spots, but plenty of visitors stay clothed. Summer weekends can be very busy across the whole river corridor, with parking at the bridge filling early. The land around the crossing is partly BLM public land, where camping, fires, alcohol and glass are banned.

Most of its shoreline is managed as Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. The naturist listing points to small, sandy, secluded coves on the shoreline. They are a short walk from NC-751 on the Apex side of the lake, out of sight of the road, and people sunbathe nude there informally. No public source we found names the exact cove, gives its size or describes facilities. Expect undeveloped woodland shoreline rather than a managed swim beach. The state recreation area's official swim beaches are clothed, family areas. This is a low-profile, local spot, and you should treat it as unofficial and discreet.
Kaihalulu Red Sand Beach
InformalKaihalulu, better known as Red Sand Beach, is a small cove on the south side of Ka'uiki Head, the cinder cone that frames Hana Bay on Maui's east coast. The iron-rich cinder of the eroding cone gives the sand its deep red to maroon colour, set against black lava, green ironwood trees and turquoise water. A natural barrier of jagged lava rocks across the mouth of the cove breaks the open-ocean waves and creates a sheltered pool for wading and snorkelling in calm conditions, though currents near the gaps, especially at the north end, are strong and swimming beyond the barrier is dangerous. Because the beach is isolated and only reached by an exposed cliff path, it has long been used clothing-optional and visitors should expect a few nude sunbathers. There are no lifeguards, restrooms, showers or bins. The access trail crosses private land and is narrow, crumbling and slippery, and injuries and helicopter rescues are reported regularly.
Kauapea Beach
InformalKauapea Beach, better known as Secret Beach, is on Kauai's north shore between Kalihiwai Bay and Kilauea Point. It is a wide, golden-sand beach about half a mile to 3,000 ft long, backed by red and black sea cliffs and thick vegetation, and no road reaches it. Kilauea Lighthouse sits on the headland to the east, with the seabird islet Mokuaeae offshore. The trail comes out at the west end. Nude sunbathers gather at the far eastern end, below the lighthouse cliffs. Tide pools and lava-rock lagoons form there on calm days, and small streams spill down the cliff. Visitors use them as natural showers. A waterfall about 15 ft high falls to the sea a short way beyond the west end. The beach has no facilities, shade only at the back against the vegetation, and no lifeguard. The bottom shelves fairly steeply and the shorebreak is strong. Kauai's alternative crowd and nudists use the beach alongside clothed walkers and photographers. The steep trail keeps numbers down.
Kehena Beach
UnofficialKehena Beach is a small black-sand beach on the rugged Puna coast of the Big Island, along Highway 137 (the Red Road) a few miles from Kalapana. The beach formed after a 1955 lava flow, and a major earthquake later dropped it about three feet and destroyed the old concrete stairs, so you now reach it by a short, steep scramble over rock. The sand is coarse and jet black, framed by lava ledges and shaded by coconut palms and ironwood at the back. It has a long reputation as a clothing-optional beach, with no signs either way; a share of visitors go nude, most do not. On Sundays a drum circle usually gathers in the afternoon and the place takes on a local, alternative-community feel. Spinner dolphins often pass offshore and the beach is sometimes called Dolphin Beach. The ocean here is open and powerful, with strong currents and a hard shore break, especially in winter, so swimming is for confident swimmers on calm days only. There are no facilities at all.
Knight Island
InformalKnight Island is a wooded, 185-acre island in northern Lake Champlain, about two miles east of North Hero village in Vermont's Champlain Islands. Almost all of it is Knight Island State Park, apart from a small private area at the south end. The island is about a mile long and half a mile wide, with roughly 2.5 miles of mostly rocky shoreline. It has no sandy public beach, and you swim off rock ledges and small coves. A trail circles the island and links seven remote campsites (one tent site and six lean-tos), each for up to eight people. The only facilities are composting toilets, and there is no drinking water. The island appears on a Wikipedia list of social nudity places as a spot for nude use. We found no other guide, forum or news report describing naturist use. Treat it as a quiet boat-in island where skinny-dipping at a secluded campsite may go unremarked, not as an established nude beach.
Laguna Creek Beach
InformalLaguna Creek Beach is a remote sandy beach on the north coast of Santa Cruz County, about six miles north of Santa Cruz and south of Davenport, within Coast Dairies State Park (administered with Wilder Ranch State Park). Laguna Creek reaches the sea here through a marshy lagoon that closes behind a sand bar in summer, and the beach is framed by low bluffs, old farm fields and a rocky shore to the north, with Sandhill Bluff just to the south. The light-coloured sand is fairly broad: the southern part is more open, while the north end is better sheltered on windy days. Because it is out of sight of the highway and reached only on foot, part of the beach has long been used for clothing-optional sunbathing alongside surfers, kite-surfers and birders; local birders note that some of their members avoid it for that reason. Western snowy plovers nest here and much of the sand may be fenced off during the nesting season. There is no shade, no water and no facilities, and the surf is cold with rip currents.
Lake Pleasant
InformalLake Pleasant is a large desert reservoir on the Agua Fria River north-west of Phoenix, managed as Lake Pleasant Regional Park by Maricopa County Parks, with marinas, boat ramps, campgrounds and a few gravel and rocky shorelines rather than sand beaches. It is a boating lake first: on summer weekends the main coves, especially Humbug Cove, known as Party Cove, fill with anchored boats and are watched closely by the Maricopa County Sheriff's lake patrol. There is no designated or recognised nude beach. Arizona guides say skinny-dipping is commonplace on the northern end of the lake and upriver, where coves are quieter and best reached by boat, kayak or 4x4 tracks on the north-east side. The shoreline is rock, gravel and desert scrub with no shade, and summer air temperatures exceed 100°F. There are no lifeguards anywhere on the lake and drownings occur most summers, so life jackets are strongly advised.

Land's End Beach
UnofficialLand's End Beach is a cluster of small sandy pockets between rocks below the Lands End cliffs at San Francisco's north-west corner, inside the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Its sheltered nooks have a long history of nude sunbathing, and the crowd has traditionally been mostly gay men. Many visitors stack rocks into windbreaks against the blowing sand. Wind, fog and cold water are typical. Swimming is unsafe because of strong currents, and the walk in is rough, so this suits experienced beachgoers better than casual visitors.
Larsen's Beach

Larson's Beach
InformalLarsen's Beach, also known as Ka'aka'aniu or Lepeuli, is a long, remote stretch of golden sand on the north-east shore of Kauai, east of Kilauea and close to Moloa'a. There is no road to the sand: a short trail drops through pasture and ironwood trees from a dirt parking area, and once on the beach you can walk a long way along a shoreline backed by trees and bluffs with few other people. A wide, shallow reef lies just offshore, with rocky, limu-covered bottom close in, and a gap in the reef near the middle of the beach, Pakala Channel, produces a powerful rip current. The beach has a long reputation for clothing-optional use, with no signs either way; clothed families use it too, and on most days only a handful of people are nude, with plenty of empty sand to spread out on. Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles regularly haul out here. There are no lifeguards and no facilities, and the beach has a record of drownings, so it is better for walking and sunbathing than swimming.
Little Beach
UnofficialLittle Beach, officially Pu'u Ola'i Beach, is a small cove in Makena State Park on Maui's south shore, tucked on the far side of the Pu'u Ola'i cinder cone from the much larger Big Beach (Makena Beach). For decades it has been Hawaii's best-known nude beach, used by locals and visitors as a de facto clothing-optional spot, although nudity is illegal under state law and the state has posted signs prohibiting nudity, alcohol and fires. The beach is a crescent of fine white sand a few hundred feet long with clear turquoise water, sharp reef and lava rock at both ends, and views across to Kaho'olawe and Molokini. The shore break is gentler than Big Beach and good for bodysurfing, but waves and currents can turn rough. The cinder cone shades the sand in the morning, so the sun arrives later. It gets crowded and there is not much room to spread out. The once-famous Sunday sunset drum circle and fire dancing led the state to close the beach temporarily in 2021, after which weekend hours were cut; guides now report the drum circle has largely moved elsewhere.
Little Beach (Maui / Puʻu Olai)

Little Beach at Muir Beach
OfficiallyLittle Beach is the small cove at the north end of Muir Beach on the Marin County coast, about 16 miles north of San Francisco where Redwood Creek meets the Pacific below Mount Tamalpais. The main beach, sometimes called Big Beach, is a busy family and dog-walking beach managed as part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. At its northern end a jumble of large rocks and the base of the cliffs cut off a compact, semicircular sandy cove, and this is the clothing-optional part. Even at high tide the water usually covers only part of the sand. The cove is backed by steep bluffs with houses above, gets full sun when the fog clears, and offers no shade. The crowd is mixed and generally quieter than at Red Rock Beach further up the coast: a few dozen people on a typical summer weekend, and well over a hundred on the hottest days. The water is cold, there are no lifeguards, and sneaker waves and rip currents occur along this coast. Much of the land down to the tide line is in private parcels, and neighbours have periodically raised complaints about behaviour, so discretion matters.
Longnook Beach
InformalLongnook Beach is a remote Atlantic ocean beach at the end of Long Nook Road in Truro, on the Outer Cape, inside the boundaries of Cape Cod National Seashore. It is backed by some of the highest sand cliffs and dunes on the Cape, which make it feel wild even though a town parking lot sits at the top. The beach is wide, soft sand facing the open Atlantic with cold water, surf and occasional strong currents, and there are no lifeguards. Getting down means a steep, narrow path down the dune, which keeps crowds down. It has a long reputation as a clothing-optional spot, especially with an older crowd, and guides say that walking some distance along the beach away from the access path brings you to quieter stretches where some people sunbathe nude. That is informal: nudity is banned on federal land throughout the Seashore, though rangers enforce it rarely.
Lucy Vincent Beach
OfficiallyLucy Vincent Beach is a broad south-shore beach in Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard, backed by dramatic eroding clay cliffs. Town rules ban nude bathing within the first 1,500 feet of the entrance, and beyond that point nude sunbathing and swimming have long been accepted. That makes this one of the few New England beaches where a town effectively allows nude use. The atmosphere is relaxed and mixed, and couples and older regulars are common. Note that summer access is restricted to residents.
Marina State Beach
InformalMarina State Beach is a broad, dune-backed beach on Monterey Bay in the city of Marina, best known for its hang-gliding dunes and heavy surf. Nude sunbathing does not take place on the state beach itself. Bay Area guides from 2010 and 2011 describe a small, long-used nude spot just over the state property line, about 100 yards north, in a hollow between the last two large dunes before the sand, a little to the right of the beach path from Dunes Drive. The land there is believed to be private, which keeps it out of the rangers' patrol area. It is used mostly by local regulars and is rarely crowded. Expect fog, wind and cold water much of the year, with powerful surf that makes swimming dangerous; June and the autumn months tend to be the most pleasant.
Marshall's Beach
OfficiallyMarshall's Beach is a small, rocky beach on the Presidio's western shoreline in San Francisco, just north of Baker Beach and below the serpentine bluffs, with one of the most dramatic close-up views of the Golden Gate Bridge anywhere. It is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the National Park Service itself describes it as a clothing-optional beach. The shore is coarse sand scattered with boulders and landslide debris from the unstable bluffs, with Helmet Rock offshore. The north end, past boulders that may need scrambling over at anything but low tide, is the more secluded and is where most nude sunbathers settle. It has a long history as a gay nude beach, sometimes nicknamed 'bad boy beach', and today draws a mixed but mostly adult crowd plus photographers. It is quieter than Baker Beach. The water is cold with strong currents and is not for swimming. Temperatures are often in the 50s or 60s °F with wind and fog, so bring layers. There are no facilities.
Masonboro Island

McFaddin beach on High Island
InformalMcFaddin Beach is a roughly 20-mile stretch of hard-packed sand on the upper Texas coast, running from High Island in the west to Sea Rim State Park in the east, along the front of McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson County. Behind the beach the old Highway 87 was abandoned after storm damage, so the shore is empty of houses and businesses, backed only by low dunes and coastal marsh. Vehicles are allowed on the sand and free overnight beach camping is permitted, and on most days the beach is close to deserted. Its isolation made it the base of a Houston-area nude beach scene from the early 1990s: local naturist groups once organised gatherings here, and press reports describe a few dozen nude sunbathers on summer holiday weekends, spread out along the remote stretch east of High Island. Those groups later disbanded after run-ins with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, and recent coverage repeats the beach's reputation without much new detail, so expect a sparse, informal scene rather than an established one. The Gulf water is warm but often murky, and there is no shade and no lifeguard.
Miacomet Beach
InformalMiacomet Beach is a long, open stretch of the south shore of Nantucket, at the end of Miacomet Road south-west of Nantucket town, next to Miacomet Pond, a freshwater pond with its own small beach and birding area. The ocean beach is wide, firm sand with shells, backed by low dunes and heathland, and faces the open Atlantic, so it gets heavy surf, strong currents and steep drop-offs, and is often windy. It is one of the quieter south-shore beaches, used by walkers, surfers, dog owners, birders and couples, with a seasonal lifeguard posted on one section in summer. There is no official nude area; nude-beach listings say clothing-optional use happens only in far, empty stretches away from the access point and lifeguard, and is unofficial. The calm pond next door is the better option for children. Nantucket voters approved a bylaw in 2022 to allow topless sunbathing on beaches, pending state approval.
More Mesa Beach
InformalMore Mesa Beach runs below the bluffs of More Mesa, a large undeveloped open space between Santa Barbara and Goleta on the California coast. It is the Santa Barbara area's best-known nude beach, used unofficially rather than designated. The nude stretch is to the right, heading west, from the foot of the access stairs; to the left the sand continues toward Hope Ranch, where visitors are clothed. The beach is a long, narrow strip of sand under high, crumbling cliffs, so at high tide there may be little room to sit or pass, and natural tar on the sand is common along this coast. Crowds are modest, mostly locals, and the walk in keeps it quieter than the city beaches. There are no restrooms, food or lifeguards.
Moshup Beach
UnofficialMoshup Beach, also called Aquinnah or Gay Head Public Beach, lies at the western tip of Martha's Vineyard in the town of Aquinnah, below the multicoloured clay cliffs of Gay Head that are a National Natural Landmark and sacred to the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe. From the dune path the beach runs as a long ribbon of sand and rounded stones beneath the cliffs. Head toward the cliffs and you pass a sign warning that beyond that point you may encounter nude sunbathing; the stretch past it, sometimes called Zack's Beach, is where people go nude. It is not an official nude beach: a town bylaw technically prohibits nude bathing, and town officials have said it is not enforced. The water is open Atlantic, clear and cold, with the sunset over the ocean a big draw. Climbing on the cliffs or taking or smearing the clay is prohibited, and the tribe owns much of the cliff face. Visitors include islanders, day-trippers and longtime summer regulars, and the crowd thins the farther you walk.

The park, run by California State Parks for the US Bureau of Reclamation, covers miles of river canyon with oak woodland, granite outcrops and swimming holes, and the confluence area is one of its busiest spots in summer. Local news has described a small beach on the north side of the river below the confluence that has been used by nude sunbathers for at least three decades, and a long-time Sacramento columnist called it perhaps the most frequented nude spot in the region. It is a river beach of sand and rock beside the current rather than a broad strand, and rafters floating past are part of the scenery. The river here is cold and can be dangerous: water levels fluctuate, the bottom is uneven and there are rocks and snags, and park officials have warned visitors away from the river during high water, so it is best used late in summer when flows are lower. There are no facilities at the beach itself.
Paliku Beach (aka Donkey Beach)
UnofficialCurrent status: guides now treat Paliku as a regular beach rather than a nude one. Paliku, known as Donkey Beach, lies on Kauai's east coast near Kapa'a, on the Kealia Kai side of the shore. The name comes from the donkeys and mules once kept in a pasture beside it. For many years it was an informal clothing-optional beach, reached by a downhill walk through sugarcane fields, and its seclusion made nude sunbathing easy. The sugarcane land was later sold to developers, and the sources say enforcement of nudity rules increased. A housing development, a paved coastal path, restrooms and a parking lot ended the seclusion. Lonely Planet says the developer has cracked down on nudity, and that public nudity is illegal in Hawaii. The sources do not give a date for the change, and I did not find a county notice or decision about the beach. The beach is also described as unsafe for swimming from October to May because of rip currents and a strong shore break.
Panther Beach
InformalPanther Beach, also called Yellowbank Beach, sits at the mouth of Yellow Bank Creek on the Santa Cruz County north coast, about 8-10 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1 and part of Coast Dairies State Park. It is a long, wide strand of coarse sand backed by layered golden sandstone and mudstone cliffs, with a tall natural arch at its south end and rock shelves with tidepools. There is no lifeguard and the surf is powerful. Nude sunbathing happens in the sheltered coves at the base of the eroding cliffs and, more openly, on Hole in the Wall Beach just south, which you reach by walking through the arch at low to medium tide. Panther itself is more mixed: clothed college students, surfers and day groups use the main sand, and nudity is accepted mainly away from them. The cliffs are crumbling and climbing is prohibited. The beach has had chronic litter, graffiti and drinking problems, and State Parks has stepped up stewardship. A new paved lot with restrooms opened in April 2026 as part of the North Coast Rail Trail, which is changing access and probably crowd levels.
People’s Park
InformalPeople's Park is the wooded peninsula at the confluence of Latah (Hangman) Creek and the Spokane River, just west of downtown Spokane and part of the city's High Bridge Park. The site was an Indigenous meeting and fishing place for centuries, sat largely unused after the city acquired it in 1913, and was turned into a free campground for low-budget visitors during Expo '74. After the camp officially closed in November 1974, people kept using the riverbank, and the park became known locally for nude sunbathing. That reputation survives, but nude use today is sporadic and depends on the day: it happens mainly along stretches of riverbank away from the main trails rather than in one fixed spot. The shoreline is rocky, with smooth river stones, flat rocks for lying out and small patches of sand. The river bottom is uneven and slippery, and the current can be strong during spring snowmelt, so swimming is safer later in summer. There are no facilities at the water. Visitors include walkers, swimmers, locals and the occasional nudist, and parts of the park have had homeless camps and occasional moose sightings.
Pirates Cove Beach
UnofficialPirate's Cove is a small crescent of sand below the Cave Landing bluffs between Avila Beach and Shell Beach in San Luis Obispo County, on the Central Coast. It is one of the best-known nude beaches in California and has been used that way for decades; the whole beach is treated as clothing optional, and nude and clothed visitors share it. The cove faces south, so it is sheltered from the prevailing northwest wind and the waves are usually gentle. The sand is fine and light brown, with rock outcrops and cliffs at both ends; a sea cave, Whale's Cave, cuts through the headland near the trail. The north end draws a younger, more social crowd, including Cal Poly students, with music and drinks on sunny weekends, while the south end is quieter and favored by older naturists. The county bought the land around Cave Landing in 2013 and said at the time that the beach would stay clothing optional. Regulars have long run volunteer clean-ups, and the area had problems with lewd behavior around the parking lot and trails in the past. There are no lifeguards.
Playalinda Beach
UnofficialPlayalinda Beach is the southern, Brevard County district of Canaveral National Seashore, on an undeveloped barrier island east of Titusville with Kennedy Space Center's launch pads in view to the south. A single park road runs north behind the dunes past 13 numbered parking areas, each with a boardwalk to the sand. Nude sunbathing has traditionally happened at the very north end, from the lot 13 crossover northward toward Klondike Beach, with families tending to stay near lot 12 and the crowd thinning as you walk north. The beach itself is wide, soft sand with steep dunes and sea oats behind it, open Atlantic surf, no shade and no development of any kind. It is one of the best-known nude beaches in Florida and draws a mix of local regulars, couples and visitors from Orlando. A major caveat: hurricanes Ian and Nicole (2022) and Tropical Storm Imelda plus king tides (2025) badly damaged the dunes, and in late 2025 the park reopened Playalinda with parking areas 8 to 13 and the road north of Eddy Creek still closed. The beach also closes around rocket launches.
Polo Beach
InformalPolo Beach is the local name for the shoreline at Makaleha Beach Park in Mokuleia, on the far western end of Oahu's North Shore, off Farrington Highway near the Mokuleia polo field. For decades it has been Oahu's best-known informal nude beach. It is a long, quiet stretch of clean, soft sand with a reef offshore, sea turtles in the shallows and big surf breaking farther out in winter. The nude area is reached by walking along the sand away from the park entrance; guides describe one side as the traditional unofficial nude stretch and the other as quieter and more remote, and the crowd is a mix of gay and straight naturists. The beach has a contested history: nude sunbathers cited there won the 2000 Hawaii Supreme Court case State v. Kalama, and in 2015 the City removed a sign that specifically banned nudity, but in 2016 residents complained publicly about nudity and sexual activity and lobbied for enforcement. There are no facilities at the nude end, so bring water and food.
Potter's Falls
InformalPotter's Falls is a waterfall on Six Mile Creek in the gorge above Ithaca, New York, within the City of Ithaca's municipal watershed and close to the reservoir dams that supply the city's drinking water. The creek drops over shale ledges into a pool, with flat rock slabs around it where people sunbathe. User-submitted listings describe a long-standing skinny-dipping tradition at the pool, but this is not a beach and there is no sand. The gorge is wooded, steep and unsigned in places. The city and local tourism material say swimming in this part of the watershed is strictly prohibited and that the gorge is patrolled, with tickets issued; Ithaca's fire department also warns that swimming in gorges is illegal outside guarded areas, and there have been rescues and drownings in Six Mile Creek. Anyone visiting should treat it as a scenic hike rather than a swimming or sunbathing spot.
Privates Beach
InformalPrivates Beach is a small cove below the Opal Cliffs neighbourhood between Pleasure Point and Capitola in Santa Cruz County. For decades it lived up to its name: the Opal Cliffs Recreation District kept it behind a tall locked gate from 1941 and sold keys, latterly for $100 a year, which kept numbers low and gave it a local, insider feel. After a long fight with the California Coastal Commission over the fee and gate, a new permit required a retractable gate with an open entry, and the beach is now free to everyone from sunrise to sunset. The beach itself is narrow sand and rock at the base of unstable sandstone cliffs, with a concrete slab near the bottom of the stairs where families and regulars sunbathe, rocky reef sections and a well-known surf break offshore that draws Pleasure Point surfers. Nude sunbathing has a long tradition here among local naturists; it happens mainly in a more hidden stretch to the left (east) of the stairs rather than in front of them. The beach shrinks dramatically at high tide, and walking along the shoreline is only possible at low tide. Wave erosion causes regular cliff collapses and several old stairways are closed.
Pāʻia Secret Beach
InformalPa'ia Secret Beach is a short, hidden cove on Maui's North Shore between Pa'ia Bay and Baldwin Beach Park, just west of Pa'ia town. It is separated from the main Pa'ia Bay beach by a small vegetated point and is reached on foot, so it is far quieter than its neighbours. The sand is coarse and golden, the shore is dotted with lava rock, and a few trees and bushes give limited shade. At the eastern end a graffiti-covered World War II pillbox and nearby rocks enclose a shallow pool that suits small children; outside it, North Shore riptides can be strong. The beach is unofficially clothing-optional: nude sunbathers mostly use the western end, away from the pillbox, and one local guide calls it the island's most popular locals' nude beach. Local families sometimes fish here at weekends. There are no lifeguards, toilets or showers on the beach. High tides cover much of the sand.
RCA Beach
InformalRCA Beach is a remote strip of sand below the bluffs of the Bolinas Mesa in west Marin, at the southern end of the Point Reyes peninsula. It takes its name from the old RCA transmitting station whose antenna towers still stand on the mesa above. The land was bought by The Nature Conservancy in 1977 and passed to Point Reyes National Seashore, which leased it to a nonprofit health organisation, so the beach sits on the edge of the Seashore with an unusual management history. It is roughly a mile of decent sand under eroding cliffs, windy but with sheltered nooks, and with plenty of driftwood that regulars stack into windbreaks and shelters. There are tidepools at low tide and the surf attracts some surfers. Because it takes a steep, eroded scramble to reach, the beach is never crowded; a long-standing estimate is five to twenty people on a typical day, and most of them are nude. The water is cold with strong currents, so it is a sunbathing and beachcombing spot rather than a swimming beach. There are no facilities of any kind, and dogs are not allowed.
Red Rock Beach

Rock River
InformalThe Rock River runs into the West River at the Dummerston-Newfane town line, about eight miles north of Brattleboro, Vermont, and its lower reach is a chain of swimming holes reached from Route 30. The first hole, nearest the road and known locally as Indian Love Call, is a family spot where people keep their clothes on. Upstream, the next site is clothing optional but still mixed and family friendly, and the holes beyond it have long been used nude, with the farthest ones, about a half-hour walk in, traditionally used by gay men. This is not a sandy beach: the river runs over granite boulders, ledges and smooth slabs, with deep, clear pools that can rise fast after rain. Some riverside land is owned by Rock River Preservation, a nonprofit that put up a trail kiosk with user guidelines. On hot weekends the swimming holes are very crowded, with hundreds of cars reported along Route 30, and towns have raised concerns about sanitation, noise and roadside parking. There are no toilets or services.
Rooster Rock State Park
OfficiallyRooster Rock State Park sits on the south bank of the Columbia River at the western mouth of the Columbia River Gorge, about 25 miles east of Portland, named after the basalt pillar rising beside the river. The park has around three miles of river beach, picnic shelters, disc golf and a flat riverside trail. The eastern part of the park is a designated clothing-optional beach, often cited as the first officially designated one in the US; Oregon State Parks says it is separated by design so it cannot be seen from the clothing-required areas. Visitors reach it by heading east past the last restroom building and down steps to the sandy, willow-fringed riverbank. The beach is river sand and driftwood with gorge cliffs across the water in Washington, and the river is cold, wide and has a real current. Beach width changes with river levels: in high water, usually late spring and early summer, foot access to the nude beach can be limited. Summer weekends are busy with a mixed crowd of Portland locals, couples and groups.

Sculptured Beach
InformalSculptured Beach lies on Drakes Bay in Point Reyes National Seashore, about two miles southeast of Limantour Beach and within the Phillip Burton Wilderness. It gets its name from the eroded rock formations along the shore: sandstone and mudstone outcrops carved into arches, shelves and pillars, with a small blowhole and good tidepools at low tide. The beach is narrow and rugged, backed by steep crumbling bluffs, with stretches of sand between the rocks. Because the only way in is on foot, usually via Coast Camp or a tide-dependent walk along the shore from Limantour, it is rarely busy, and nude sunbathing has long been accepted away from the access points as long as nobody complains. There are no facilities on the beach itself. Fog, wind and cold water are the norm much of the summer, and the best days tend to be in early autumn or on clear spring afternoons. Whales, dolphins and seals are often seen offshore. Storms in early 2023 damaged the old Sculptured Beach Trail from the bluff, which the park no longer maintains.
Secret Cove Beach
InformalSecret Cove is a small clothing-optional cove on the Nevada east shore of Lake Tahoe, below Highway 28 between Sand Harbor and Glenbrook, on US Forest Service land managed by the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. It is the first of a string of coves reached from the Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor trailheads, with Boaters Beach and Creek Beach farther along. The setting is classic east-shore Tahoe: huge rounded granite boulders, pockets of coarse sand, Jeffrey pines on the slope above, and startlingly clear blue-green water that stays cold even in August. Nude use goes back decades; today the crowd mixes nude sunbathers with clothed hikers, paddleboarders and photographers, and the cove is unsigned. The amount of sand varies with the lake level: in high-water years the sandy nooks shrink and people sunbathe on the rocks. On warm summer weekends the cove can be crowded and parking is the main constraint.
South Rodeo Beach
InformalSouth Rodeo Beach is a small, west-facing cove on the Pacific side of the Marin Headlands, just south of the main Rodeo Beach and below the old coastal gun emplacements at Battery Alexander, within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area near Sausalito. It looks straight out to sea rather than toward the Golden Gate, with sea stacks in the surf and Bird Island off the point to the south, which makes it a popular sunset spot. The beach is a narrow strip of coarse sand and pebbles under eroding bluffs, and most of it disappears at high tide, so it is only really usable around low and mid tide. There is no shade and the cove is often cold, foggy and windy, even in summer. Use is light: a mix of walkers, photographers and a handful of nude sunbathers, who tend to settle at the far end away from the path. Its clothing-optional reputation is long-standing but much weaker than at Bay Area beaches such as Baker Beach or Red Rock, and on many days nobody is nude at all. Because trails and viewpoints above look down into the cove, it is not fully private. The surf and currents make swimming unwise.
Southwest Cove
UnofficialSouthwest Cove is a small sand beach at the south end of Lake Willoughby in Westmore, in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, on public land in Willoughby State Forest. The lake fills a glacial notch between Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor, whose cliffs rise straight from the water, which makes this one of the most dramatic lake settings in New England. The cove sits below Route 5A but out of sight of the road, separated from the clothed South Beach by woods. It has been used as a clothing-optional beach since at least the 1980s and appears in nudist guides; the whole cove is clothing optional. The sand is coarse and gray-gold and the water stays shallow, about 2.5 feet deep, for a long way out before dropping off, so it is easy for wading, although Lake Willoughby itself is very deep and cold. Trees and the mountain give afternoon shade. The crowd is mostly locals and regulars, quiet and older, with perhaps a dozen or two people on a hot weekend; photography without permission and sexual behavior are not tolerated. There are no facilities at the cove.

Stony Kill Falls
InformalStony Kill Falls is an 87-foot plunge waterfall on the Stony Kill stream in the town of Wawarsing, on the northwestern edge of Minnewaska State Park Preserve in New York's Shawangunk Ridge. The land was bought in 2001 by New York State, the Open Space Institute and the NY-NJ Trail Conference from a sand and gravel company. The falls drop over a cliff of conglomerate rock into a boulder-strewn bowl. Above the falls a trail climbs to a series of cascades and small pools. The place nudists refer to is a pool roughly 100 yards upstream of the upper falls, past a natural rock dam, sometimes called the 'Nudist Pool'. Hikers note that nude swimmers are occasional rather than the norm, and most visitors are clothed day hikers. The falls are strongest in spring and after rain and can be a trickle in late summer, though the pools hold water. There are no facilities of any kind, and the area is busy on summer weekends.
Sycamore Creek
InformalSycamore Creek drains the Mazatzal foothills in the Tonto National Forest northeast of Phoenix and is one of the few streams in the area that carries water for much of the year. The stretch named in nude-recreation guides is near the Beeline Highway (SR-87) bridge between mile markers 212 and 213, close to the tiny settlement of Sunflower at about 2,400 feet. Here the creek winds through a narrow, shady canyon lined with sycamores, cottonwoods, willows and mesquite, forming a string of small natural pools between gravel bars and boulders. There is no beach in the usual sense: you sit on rocks or gravel beside the water. Arizona nude-recreation guides list the pools as a skinny-dipping spot, with nude use spreading out along the creek away from the road, but it is shared with birders, hikers, campers and off-road users, so expect clothed people too. Water depends on season: it is best in spring and after winter rains, often reduced to puddles or dry in early summer, and it can flash flood dangerously after storms. Summer heat away from the water is intense. The area is free, undeveloped and rough around the edges.
Tanque Verde Falls
InformalTanque Verde Falls is a seasonal waterfall in Tanque Verde Canyon on the far east side of Tucson, in the Coronado National Forest between Tanque Verde Ridge in the Rincon Mountains and Agua Caliente Hill. Tanque Verde Creek drops over a series of granite ledges here, ending in an 80-foot main fall, with clear pools and smaller cascades above and below it. Water flows mostly after winter rain and the summer monsoon; in dry spells the pools shrink and stagnate. There is no beach: people lie on smooth slabs of rock beside the pools. The canyon has been known for decades as an informal naturist spot, and Arizona nude-recreation guides still describe it that way, with nude sunbathing and swimming mostly away from the trail and the busiest pools. It is also a popular local hiking and swimming area used by families and students, so clothed visitors are the majority on weekends. The site is notoriously dangerous: at least 30 people have died here from falls on slick rock and from flash floods, which can arrive from storms far upstream with no rain overhead. Rescue crews regularly evacuate hikers suffering from heat.
The Crater Beach in Sand City
InformalThe Crater is a large bowl-shaped hollow in the coastal dunes on the Sand City-Seaside shoreline of southern Monterey Bay, a short way from the Edgewater shopping area and in front of the Eolian Dunes Preserve. Its high sand walls hide anyone inside from the beach and the road, which is why naturists and skinny-dippers have used it for years; the long, wide beach below, about a mile of open sand backed by dunes, is also lightly used and sometimes clothing optional. People also use the Crater for dune climbing, jumping and sliding. The sand is soft and deep, there is no shade, and the Monterey Bay surf is cold with strong currents, so most visitors come to sunbathe rather than swim. Mornings are often foggy, and the wind picks up in the afternoon. Crowds are small: a mix of nude sunbathers and clothed walkers, cyclists and dog walkers, with more clothed visitors in recent years. Reviews mention sea glass on the beach but also trash and broken glass on the dune nearest Fremont Boulevard.
The Ledges Nude Beach
UnofficialThe Ledges is a clothing-optional stretch of granite shoreline on Harriman Reservoir (Lake Whitingham) in Wilmington, southern Vermont, just north of the Ward's Cove picnic area and boat launch. It is one of the best-known nude swimming spots in New England and has been used that way for decades. The nude area starts past a posted sign warning of nude sunbathers, beyond the picnic sites; the main social spots are flat granite ledges further along the shore, with a small strip of sand that appears only when the water is low. Harriman is a hydroelectric reservoir, so levels can rise or fall quickly and the little beach is sometimes under water. The water is clear, cold and entered from rocks, and there is a rope swing. On summer weekends 100 or more people may come, roughly two men to every woman, mixing long-time naturists, couples, solo visitors and locals; weekdays are quiet. In the late 1990s complaints about sexual activity in the woods led Wilmington to pass a public indecency ordinance in 2001, which residents and the group Friends of the Ledges got overturned in 2003.
UFO Beach
InformalUFO Beach is an informal nude area on the remote, undeveloped north end of South Padre Island in Cameron County, Texas, reached only by driving up the Gulf beach from County Beach Access #6. It takes its name from an orange fiberglass pod, about 14 feet across and believed to be an oil-rig escape capsule, that washed ashore between mile markers 9 and 10 around 2004, was decorated by visitors with shells and beach debris, and was later moved to near mile marker 6; a painted 'Nude Beach' sign on it points north. Nude sunbathing happens in the general stretch beyond the end of the drivable road, roughly 5 to 10 miles north of Access #6, rather than at a fixed spot. The beach is wide, soft white sand backed by dunes, with open Gulf surf, no shade and no services. Weekdays are quiet, with naturists, campers, anglers and off-roaders spread out over miles; spring break and summer weekends bring louder groups. Rattlesnakes have been reported sheltering under the pod in warm months.

West Ship Island
InformalShip Island is a long, low barrier island about 12 miles off Gulfport, Mississippi, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Hurricane Camille cut it in two in 1969, creating West and East Ship Island, and a 2019 Army Corps of Engineers restoration filled the gap so the halves are joined again. The ferry lands on the sound side near Fort Massachusetts, a brick Civil War fort, and a walk of about a third of a mile leads to the Gulf-facing swim beach, which has lifeguards in summer, rental chairs and umbrellas, showers, restrooms and a concession. The sand is fine and white and the water on the Gulf side is noticeably clearer than along the mainland coast. Nude sunbathing happens well away from all this: beach guides describe the far eastern stretch of the Gulf beach, at least a mile from the swim area, as the island's informal nudist section. Few ferry passengers walk that far, so it is used by a small group of regulars, sometimes only a handful on summer weekdays and more at weekends, plus boaters who anchor offshore. There is no shade and no facilities beyond the swim beach, and the walk in soft sand is tiring in summer heat.
Whale Beach
InformalWhale Beach, sometimes called Black Sand Beach, is the last and most southerly of the string of small coves on the Nevada east shore of Lake Tahoe reached from the Secret Harbor and Chimney Beach trailheads off State Route 28, after Secret Cove, Boaters Beach and Creek Beach. It takes its name from a large, smooth granite boulder that looks like a sperm whale. The beach is coarse dark sand grading to pebbles, with huge rounded boulders, Jeffrey pines behind, and very clear, shallow, cold water. Like its neighbours it is used clothing optional, but because it is the furthest from the road it tends to be quieter and less crowded than Secret Cove; on some days most people here are clothed, and nude visitors are a minority. Dogs on leash are allowed and are common. There is no lifeguard and no services beyond porta-potties near the trail, and campfires are banned. The surrounding land is part of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
Zmudowski State Beach
InformalZmudowski State Beach is a lightly used California state beach on Monterey Bay, just north of Moss Landing in Monterey County, about 20 miles northwest of Monterey. It is reached by a long, narrow farm road through farm fields and includes the mouth of the Pajaro River, where a natural preserve protects the estuary and salt marsh. The beach itself is a long, straight stretch of fine sand backed by low dunes, exposed to wind, fog and cold surf with rip currents. The state acquired the land in 1950 and renamed it after the donating family. For years the far north end, towards the river mouth, was known as 'Hidden Beach' and used informally by nude sunbathers who settled in the hollows behind the dunes. By 2010 local guides reported that ranger patrols and new housing nearby had largely ended that use and that the beach was mainly used by families, horse riders and anglers. Treat it today as a quiet clothed beach where discreet nude sunbathing is occasional at best.

Bagby Hot Springs

Three main springs and several seeps rise here, the largest flowing at about 138F, and the water is carried by wooden flumes into hand-hewn cedar log tubs. The lower bathhouse has three log tubs and a six-foot round tub in a shared setting, and an upper deck holds another round tub; soakers fill a tub with hot water and cool it with cold water, then empty it for the next person. After years of closures following wildfire, road damage and problems under a previous concessionaire, the site is now run by Bagby Preservation, a small local operator that collects a modest soaking fee and is restoring the bathhouse, with new cedar tubs on order. Nude soaking has a long tradition here and many guides still list Bagby as clothing optional, but the Forest Service page states that public nudity is not allowed, so bring a swimsuit. The trail is an easy walk through big cedars and firs, crossing two bridges. Expect long waits for tubs at weekends.
Baker Hot Springs

It offers RV sites with full hookups, a few cottages, free Wi-Fi and nature trails, and caters to weekend campers, seasonal visitors and full-time RV travellers. The website says the property was first set up in the 1980s as a naturist resort and has since been transformed under its new owners. It does not mention nudity or a clothing-optional policy. A 2014 Red & Black article describes the earlier resort. Bell Acres was founded in 1987 and was a member of the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR). It had about 300 members at its peak in the 1990s, and nudity was expected rather than optional. Facilities then included a pool, hot tub, volleyball court, cabins, tent sites and about 52 RV hookups. A married couple ran it, and the article said new owners were about to buy the business. The sources we read do not say when the naturist resort ended, who the current owners are or why it was converted.
Black Rock Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalBlack Rock Hot Springs is a pair of small, rock-lined soaking pools on the west bank of the Rio Grande, inside the Rio Grande Gorge a few minutes downstream of the historic John Dunn Bridge, about 30 minutes' drive north-west of Taos. The land along the gorge here is managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of Río Grande del Norte National Monument. Geothermal water seeps up through the riverbed and collects in a larger main pool and a smaller, hotter one; the main pool usually runs in the high 90s Fahrenheit (about 36-38°C), and its depth and temperature change with the river level. In spring snowmelt the Rio Grande can cover or wash out the pools entirely, and a winter flood in 2019 damaged them. The setting is dark basalt boulders and canyon walls, with the river running right beside the pools. Soaking is free, there are no facilities, and clothing is optional: many soakers go nude, but clothed visitors are common too. Because it is close to the road and well known, expect company on weekends and in good weather; the pools hold only a handful of people. Nearby Manby Hot Springs, upstream on the east side, is a separate site.
Blue Lake Resort

Facilities include an outdoor pool, a hot tub and sauna, a sand volleyball court, a beach and waterfront for canoeing, kayaking and fishing, a clubhouse, a pavilion, showers and a dump station. The calendar is built around themed party weekends with live music, such as the Black River Rumble, a 4th of July party and costume weekends. The camp opens in summer only.

It brands itself as Michigan's adult playground and states plainly that it is not a family naturist venue, so no one under 21 is admitted. The atmosphere is social and event-driven, with activities on most days in season, and press coverage notes a large swinger contingent and a crowd that leans older. Clothing is optional around most of the grounds, but the pool is the one place where clothing is not allowed. Members pay an annual fee that has been reported at up to $1,800.
Conundrum Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalConundrum Hot Springs is one of Colorado's best-known wild hot springs, set in an alpine basin at about 11,200 feet in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness south of Aspen. Reaching it takes a full-day hike of about 8.5 miles each way up the Conundrum Creek valley, with around 2,500 feet of climbing. The springs form a main pool, the hottest at up to about 103°F (39°C), plus a few smaller, cooler pools, all with a natural rock and gravel bottom and views of the surrounding 13,000-foot peaks. Clothing is unofficially optional, and guides note that nude soakers often outnumber those in swimsuits; the expected etiquette is simply not to stare. There are no facilities of any kind. The springs were so heavily used that the Forest Service described them as being loved to death, with problems from human waste and overcrowded campsites, and in 2018 it introduced a reservation permit system for overnight camping. Day hikers can still visit without a reservation if they head back before dark. Snow usually covers the trail from October to June.

Dakota Hot Springs

An artesian well drilled during oil exploration in 1924 delivers odorless water at about 108°F (42°C); the main free-form concrete pool settles at around 95-98°F (35-37°C), hottest near the wellhead. The site was known in the 1990s as The Well, and later owners rebranded it and worked to shed its rough reputation. Today it is clothing-optional every open day except Tuesday, when swimsuits are required and families are welcome. Rules are strict: no sexual or intimate behaviour, phones and cameras stay in the car, no glass and no smoking. Facilities are simple, with a bathhouse and showers, sun chairs, and tent and RV sites and camper rentals on the property. Many regulars come from Colorado Springs, and the atmosphere is low-key rather than resort-like.

Deep Creek Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalDeep Creek Hot Springs is a cluster of natural rock and sand pools where geothermal water seeps into Deep Creek in a desert canyon on the north side of the San Bernardino National Forest, between Hesperia/Apple Valley and Lake Arrowhead. Hot water collects in several small soaking pools of varying temperatures right beside the cool, clear creek, so visitors alternate between the two. The Pacific Crest Trail follows the creek for 16 miles here, and the drainage is a State Wild Trout Stream with the richest wildlife habitat in the forest, including endangered arroyo toads. There are no facilities at all: no restrooms, drinking water or trash service, and camping and campfires are prohibited. The springs are informally clothing optional, and nude soaking is common and widely reported; the Forest Service page itself is silent on clothing. The water is known to harbour the amoeba that causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, so never put your head under or swallow water, and coliform counts are highest around the busy pools. Summer temperatures can top 100 F, and the climb back out is steep and exposed.

Desert Reef Hot Spring
Informal / TraditionalDesert Reef Hot Springs is a small, privately run soaking resort on a 77.5-acre parcel of high-desert scrub outside Florence in Fremont County, Colorado, roughly 40 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, with mountain views to the west. Water comes from an artesian geothermal well and fills five pools: a main pool about 36 by 50 feet (around 40,000 gallons) plus four smaller tubs, and there is a cold plunge big enough for two. The operators list average temperatures of about 100-104°F in winter and 96-108°F in summer. The whole facility is adults only (18+), and swimsuits are optional on most days; the exception is Friday, when suits are required until 6:30 pm. Wednesday daytime is reserved for members and Splash Pass holders, and Tuesday is closed to day visitors. Single men or groups of men must be accompanied by a partner or a woman. Phones are not allowed in the pool area, there are no lockers, and guests may bring at most two alcoholic drinks (no glass). It is deliberately low-key rather than spa-like: restrooms with a shower, changing rooms, and rentable vintage Airstreams, tiny homes and van camping spots for overnight stays.

Rules are typical of traditional clubs: sit on a towel, no photography in common areas without permission, quiet hours from 11pm to 8am, and dogs allowed under pet rules. Dyer Woods Nudist Campground

Every guest passes a background check, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Discounted midweek day passes and free Saturday day passes for women are offered as promotions.
El Dorado Hot Springs

It is a rustic, homemade-feeling mineral spring rather than a resort: hot, continuously flowing well water feeds a scatter of soaking tubs around the property, some of them private and screened by wooden fencing, plus a larger communal pool where most guests soak nude. Clothing is optional throughout the soaking areas, and reviewers note that nudity is also encouraged to keep soap and swimwear chemicals out of the water. The grounds are home to roaming peacocks, ducks, quail and pigs, and there are campsites and RV spots with some electric hookups, so many visitors stay overnight, especially snowbirds in winter. Facilities are basic and showing wear in places. Water temperature is described as warm to moderately hot rather than scalding. Prices reported in 2026 guides were about $15 per hour for a private tub and $10 per hour or $30 per day for the communal pool, but the official website is no longer active, so rates should be confirmed by phone.
Emerald Lake Resort

Traditionally nudity was required rather than optional, with towels on seats and security staff enforcing a ban on sexual behaviour. However, the resort's website currently shows a temporary revised dress code that requires guests to stay covered in common areas, with a light wrap, robe or towel acceptable, while facility improvements and fee changes are under way. Until that notice is lifted, do not expect a nudist experience; check with the front desk before travelling.
Empire Haven

Day visitors are welcome Thursday to Sunday, and may stay until dusk. Monday to Wednesday day visits are limited to members and are by appointment. First-time visitors do not have to undress to ask about the park or to take a free tour. Pets are allowed if well behaved. The park's website shows a 'closed until 2026' banner and gives a season start of 15 May, so check with the park before travelling.
Esalen Institute
Unofficial / ToleratedEsalen Institute is a retreat centre on the Big Sur coast of California, known for its cliffside hot springs baths above the Pacific. The institute is a learning and retreat centre, and most of the campus is for students and guests. The hot springs are the best-known part of the site, and sources describe them as clothing-optional. Public access to the baths has been limited to reservations, and one source describes a public night from about 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. Sources differ on whether that public night still runs, and on how many people are allowed each night, with figures around 20. Reservations are taken by phone and fill quickly, especially in summer, when they open several weeks ahead. Fees quoted range from about 20 to 35 dollars per person, and overnight guests get access as part of their stay. The institute's own website was not found, so the current rules need confirming with it before any visit.
Faywood Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalFaywood Hot Springs is a rustic geothermal resort in the high Chihuahuan Desert of south-western New Mexico, on Highway 61 between Deming and Silver City and a mile short of City of Rocks State Park. Mineral water from the springs feeds a set of open-air soaking pools of different temperatures, divided into public pools where swimsuits are required and a separate naturist area where clothing is optional, plus private pools rented by the hour. Accommodation includes about half a dozen named cabins (two of them pet friendly), a guest house, a casita and an adobe, along with pull-through and back-in RV sites with full hookups, tent sites and gated RV storage; monthly RV stays are popular with winter visitors. Peacocks roam the grounds. All ages are welcome, with children supervised by a parent. Since August 2024 the resort has run on reservations only: every guest prepays, and day soaking is limited to overnight guests, private-pool renters and soaker's pass holders. It is open year-round, 11am to 8pm daily, closing to check-ins only on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday.
Fern Hills Club

It has operated for more than five decades and is a 100% AANR club, meaning every member must also belong to the American Association for Nude Recreation. The club's signature feature is an unusual 52-foot circular swimming pool beside a sunbathing lawn, and other recreation includes volleyball, water volleyball, petanque, miniten and shuffleboard. Forest Hills Club

The club calls itself Michigan's oldest clothing-optional resort and says it was chartered by the American Sunbathing Association in 1957; that date comes only from the club's own material. It runs as a state-licensed campground with hookup sites for RVs, travel trailers and tents, more than 65 campsites, and cabin rentals. Its site and directory listings mention a clubhouse, a heated salt-water pool, a hot tub, a nature trail, sports courts and free Wi-Fi. The club's constitution refers to social nude recreation, so nudity is part of the club's purpose rather than an optional extra. The grounds are wooded and quiet, which suits people who want a weekend away from town. Visitors should expect a members-focused community rather than a public nude beach, and should contact the club before arriving, because the pages I opened do not spell out a full day-visit policy.
Forty Acre Club

Freedom RV Resort
Private ResortFreedom RV Resort is a small, veteran-owned clothing-optional RV park in a quiet country setting on State Highway 97 east of Pleasanton in Atascosa County, about 30 minutes south of San Antonio and an hour and a half from Corpus Christi. Hosts Rick and Dee Williams live on site. It describes itself as a membership-only, clothing-optional RV park, and admission is restricted to adults aged 21 and over. The resort is set up for RVs rather than cabins or tents, with hookup sites for overnight campers, seasonal and local RVers, winter Texans and snowbirds, and work campers. It is listed and featured by AANR. The park is open year-round, and its mild South Texas winters make it a popular choice for winter stays. Nearby there is golf, fishing and hunting, with museums, restaurants and shops in Pleasanton and San Antonio.

Glen Eden Sun Club

Lodging covers camping, RV hookup sites and rental park models, and the resort runs a regular schedule of shows and dances. An AANR release lists it among AANR-affiliated Western resorts. A 2025 Substack piece says it is the only AANR-affiliated resort still open in Southern California, while a neighbouring resort closed. Sources disagree on the number of RV sites, so check the official site for current figures.
Goldbug Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalGoldbug Hot Springs, also known as Elk Bend Hot Springs, is an undeveloped chain of geothermal pools on a side creek in a steep canyon east of the Salmon River, on Bureau of Land Management land about 23 miles south of Salmon, Idaho. Nobody runs it as a business: there is no fee, no staff and nothing at the springs themselves. Hot water spills down the creek through a series of rock-lined pools, at least five and by some counts six, linked by small cascades. Temperatures vary from pool to pool, with the hottest generally nearest the trail and cooler water where the creek mixes in. The largest is a heart-shaped pool just past the upper footbridge, and a quieter waterfall pool lies below it. There is no written clothing rule, but nude soaking is common and widely accepted here, and guides warn first-timers that they are likely to meet nude bathers. Swimsuits turn up more on busy summer and autumn weekends. The springs are reachable all year, and winter visits reward hikers with snowy scenery and fewer people. Primitive campsites with fire rings sit along the lower trail, but camping is not allowed within 500 feet of the springs.
Goldmyer Hot Springs

Hot water flows out of a horizontal mine shaft into a cave pool and then into a series of rock-dammed pools beneath the trees. Visits are capped at about 20 people a day and are booked through a monthly lottery or by phone. Clothing is optional and mixed groups soak together, although many visitors wear swimwear.

It describes itself as family oriented and welcomes children. The grounds are clothing optional, but nudity is expected in the pool and hot tub, and photography is strictly banned. The season runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.
Gymno-Vita Park

Local history sources say it was founded around 1979 by Bob Truett, then director of the Birmingham Zoo. The facilities are grouped in the middle of the woods rather than behind a perimeter fence. The park bills itself as a family nude recreation destination and admits only couples and families; there are no single rates. It opens from April 1 to the third weekend in October and is closed through the winter.

Hart Mountain Hot Springs

Hidden River Resort
Private ResortHidden River Resort is a privately run clothing-optional campground on 88 acres beside the St. Marys River in Charlton County, in the far southeast corner of Georgia, about 30 miles west of Jacksonville, Florida. Despite the name it is essentially an RV and tent park: there are no rooms or restaurant, and guests bring their own food and supplies. Campers choose between sites with 30- or 50-amp power, water and sewer, tent sites with or without electricity, and open wooded camping, and there is a dump station. Shared facilities include a swimming pool and hot tub, a bathhouse with indoor and outdoor hot showers, and a large covered pavilion with an outdoor kitchen. The land runs down to a white-sand river beach used for sunning and, when the water level allows, canoe and kayak trips. Nature trails are open to walkers, cyclists and riders, as horses are welcome, and there are petanque, horseshoe and volleyball courts plus fenced space for dogs. Clothing is optional across the grounds, but full nudity is required in the pool and hot tub, with a soap shower first. The resort's long-running spring event, Nudie Blues, reaches its 25th edition in April 2026.

In the Woods
Private ResortIn The Woods is a privately run, members-only clothing-optional campground on 30 wooded acres in the rolling hills of Georgia's upper Piedmont near Canon, in Franklin County, a short drive from Lake Hartwell. It presents itself as a gay clothing-optional campground, and older press coverage describes a membership that is mostly men, but the campground states that it does not discriminate and that everyone is welcome. The whole property is clothing optional for members aged 21 and over. Accommodation spans wooded tent sites, RV sites and a range of rental units listed as sleepers, a bunkhouse, dens, cabins and a loft chalet, along with annual and seasonal sites for regulars. Shared facilities include a swimming pool, hot tub, a small gym, a clubhouse, campfire areas and landscaped walking trails through the woods. The setting is quiet and rural, and the campground points guests to nearby day trips such as Tallulah Falls and the Blue Ridge foothills, as well as to shops and restaurants in the surrounding towns. A 2017 regional LGBT newspaper ranking listed it among the top ten gay campgrounds in North America.
Indian Hills Nudist Park

It was opened in 1971 by Gottlieb 'the Professor' Kogel, a New Orleans magician and lifelong nudist, and after his death in 2010 passed to the Kraemer family, who still run it; it bills itself as Louisiana's only nudist park, with the motto 'Keeping Louisiana Nude Since 1971'. Around 40 people live on site year-round on 45 residential lots, and there are about 107 rental sites for RVs and tents plus a handful of themed rentals: a large barn for four, a travel trailer, a poolside studio, an accessible cabin and small suites. The heart of the park is a heated pool, a hot tub and a clubhouse remodelled in 2015-16, with a small gym, a social area, nature trails, bathhouses and a coin laundry. Nudity is required at the pool and hot tub (only a hat allowed) and in the clubhouse, where towels, wraps or shirts are tolerated. Photography is banned and sexual activity in public areas is prohibited. Thursday game nights and weekend karaoke keep the social calendar busy.
Jeju Sauna
Private ResortA large Korean-style jjimjilbang in Duluth, in metro Atlanta's Koreatown, and one of the biggest bathhouse complexes in the south-east. Guests are sent by gender to separate bath areas with hot and cold pools, showers and saunas, where full nudity is required in line with Korean bathing custom. A clothed co-ed floor has themed heated rooms, lounges and sleeping areas, and there is an Olympic-size pool where swimsuits are worn.
Jerry Johnson Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalJerry Johnson Hot Springs is a set of undeveloped soaking pools along Warm Springs Creek, a tributary of the Lochsa Wild and Scenic River, in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest of north-central Idaho. The site sits at roughly 3,200 feet in an old cedar and fir forest about an hour west of Lolo Pass. Three groups of rock-walled pools are fed by separate hot sources. The lowest, beside the creek below a small waterfall, is the hottest (up to about 115°F near the source) and is under water during spring runoff, emerging later in summer. A middle group by a large boulder runs around 95-100°F, is easiest to reach and is the busiest. A third group further up the trail has meadow and mountain views and tends to be quieter. Daytime soakers mostly wear swimsuits, while nude soaking is reported as common, especially in the evening and after dark among regulars; one guide nonetheless lists swimwear as required, so be discreet. The paid resort pools upstream always require suits. In 2018 a child died of Naegleria fowleri infection after bathing here, and Inyo County has posted warning signs.

Membership has historically been small, around 75 to 100 people with a median age in the 50s according to a mid-2000s student newspaper feature, and the foundation keeps a do-not-admit list for anyone who behaves inappropriately. Lake Edun spent years in a zoning dispute with Shawnee County from 1998 into the mid-2000s over admission charges on agricultural land, but it remains open and still holds events such as an annual autumn fish fry. It comfortably holds two to four people. A short boardwalk crosses the creek and runs around the pool, and nearby benches let you cool off between soaks. Temperature varies with the weather, usually somewhere between 105 and 115°F, and soakers control it with a valve on the inflow and a drain plug in the bottom. Clothing is optional by local custom and nudity is common. Because of the rough final road it is usually quieter than the better-known tubs closer to Highway 395, though weekends can bring a wait. Cattle graze the surrounding range. There is no shade, water or toilet, and it is not suited to children.

Stone foundations of a bathhouse and cabins survive from the late 1800s, when visitors came by stagecoach from the railroad at Taos Junction, and from Arthur Manby's unfinished early-20th-century resort scheme. The pools sit only a few feet above normal river level and are swamped when the Rio Grande runs high, especially during spring snowmelt and summer monsoon storms. Clothing is optional by long custom and many regulars soak nude, though there is no official policy either way. The springs are on BLM land, but the old parking area and approach roads cross private land, and neighbours' complaints about traffic, trash and trespass led to the road access being closed in 2021.

McCredie Hot Springs

The setting is mossy forest, though the highway is close enough to hear. Clothing is optional, and many soakers go nude, while children do visit. Being so close to the road, it is one of Oregon's busiest springs on weekends and holidays. It is day use only, with no overnight camping.

Shepherd Hot Springs

The views reach the Sierra Nevada and the White Mountains. A valve controls the hot inflow, so check the temperature before getting in. Clothing-optional soaking is normal here, and the nearest services are in Mammoth Lakes, about 12 miles away.
Sierra Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalA rustic, non-profit hot springs resort and retreat centre on the edge of the Sierra Valley near Sierraville, north of Truckee. It has an indoor temple-dome hot pool, outdoor warm and hot soaking pools, a sauna and meadow views of the Sierra. Soaking is clothing-optional. Lodging ranges from a historic lodge and cabins to camping, and there is a café on site. Membership or a day pass is needed to soak.
Sky Farm
Private ResortSky Farm is a co-operative naturist club on roughly 35 to 38 wooded acres in the Liberty Corner section of Bernards Township, near Basking Ridge in Somerset County, New Jersey. It traces its roots to the American League for Physical Culture, a nudist group founded in New York in 1929. Led by Kurt Barthel, the group bought the Liberty Corner land in 1932, which makes Sky Farm one of the oldest nudist clubs in the United States. It is affiliated with AANR. Members collectively own the property: applicants serve a probationary year before becoming full members with a share, and everyone helps maintain the grounds. There are around 57 members' cottages, tent platforms and a few other campsites, plus a guest lodge. Three bathhouses serve the grounds, since the cottages have no bathrooms, and the lodge area has a heated pool and a spa. A caretaker lives on site all year. The club is clothing-optional, family-oriented and explicitly not a sex club, and some members grew up there.
Solair Recreation League
Unofficial / ToleratedSolair Recreation League is a member-owned family nudist resort and campground in Woodstock, in the north-east corner of Connecticut, drawing nudists from across New England. Founded in 1934, it is one of the oldest nudist clubs in the US and is affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR). The grounds cover more than 360 acres of woods around a pond with a sandy beach, used for swimming, boating and fishing. Facilities include a solar-heated outdoor pool, hot tub and sauna, tennis and pickleball courts, volleyball and shuffleboard, a fitness centre, a library, a community centre with an outdoor pavilion, a children's playground and marked hiking trails. Accommodation is in rental cabins, on tent platforms, or on RV and travel-trailer sites, and many members keep seasonal homes on site. The Bare Grille café on the lower level of the community centre opens on summer weekends. Solair is family-oriented, with activities for children and adults, and has made efforts to attract younger members through reduced rates for under-40 and under-30 couples. Visitors are welcome from late April through October; members use the grounds year-round.
Spa World
Private ResortA big Korean-style spa in Centreville, in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. Its gender-separated bade pools, hot and cold tubs, saunas and steam rooms allow nudity or proper swimwear, while the shared floor has themed poultice rooms and a fitness centre, where spa clothing is worn. Patrons must shower before using the pools, and street clothes and underwear are not allowed in the bathing areas.
Spruce Hollow Campground
Private ResortSpruce Hollow is a private, adults-only clothing-optional campground on about 30 wooded acres at 8700 West 6 1/2 Road near Mesick, Wexford County, in northwest lower Michigan, south of Traverse City. Pat and Jan Bell opened it around 2003 as a nudist campground affiliated with AANR, and a 2011 article called it the only nudist venue in northern Michigan. It is now under new ownership and has changed character. It describes itself as a ladies' camp that welcomes both lifestyle and naturist guests: women can come alone, but men are admitted only with a female companion, and single men are not accepted. Nudity is allowed throughout the camp, but sexual activity must stay out of public view. The site offers rustic tent pitches, which are first come, first served, and a limited number of sites with power. Weekend gatherings are held around the pool on Friday to Sunday in summer. Dogs are welcome. The 2026 season opened on 22 May.
Stanley Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalStanley Hot Springs is a set of primitive soaking pools in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness of north-central Idaho, high above the Lochsa River corridor and about 50 miles east of Kooskia. It has nothing to do with the town of Stanley in the Sawtooths, which causes frequent mix-ups. Water at about 106°F (41°C) emerges from several sources on a forested hillside and runs through a chain of pools built up with rocks and logs before draining into Huckleberry Creek, at roughly 3,600 feet elevation. Temperatures differ from pool to pool, so test before getting in. There are no buildings, fees or facilities: just the pools, a scatter of primitive campsites in the trees and the sound of the creek. The roughly five-mile approach keeps casual visitors away, so the people you meet are mostly backpackers and hikers, many of whom camp overnight. Clothing is optional by long custom and hot spring guides list it as such; most soakers go nude, but swimsuits are also common and there is no rule either way. Wildlife includes elk, moose, black bears and occasionally mountain lions, so food storage matters. It is a genuine wilderness outing rather than a casual soak.
Star Ranch
Unofficial / ToleratedStar Ranch is a family-oriented nudist club in McDade, in the post-oak country about 35 miles east of Austin. Run by the Sahnoans, a member club operating since 1957, it describes itself as the oldest nudist club in Texas and is affiliated with both the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR, Southwest region) and The Naturist Society. The property covers about 112 acres, just over half developed, with the rest left as pasture and woodland crossed by walking trails. Facilities include a recently renovated outdoor pool with jets, a fountain and water-volleyball poles, a spa, a tennis court with a pickleball overlay, sand volleyball, pétanque, horseshoe and washer courts, and Tara Hall, an indoor recreation building with pool, darts, ping-pong, shuffleboard and games. Three shaded pavilions host gatherings, and a café serves breakfast at weekends. Visitors can stay in rental cabins scattered around the grounds, on RV sites with 30/50-amp power and water/sewer hook-ups, or in a tent area next to the pool. It is clothing-optional, with a firm non-sexual code: lewd behaviour leads to expulsion. Star Ranch hosted the national AANR convention in 2021 and is open year-round.
Starland Retreat Center
Private ResortStarland is a retreat center and campground on about ten private acres in the high desert at Yucca Valley, close to Joshua Tree National Park. Most of the property can be clothing-optional, and it serves as a Southern California base for gatherings such as Network for a New Culture and the Radical Faeries, so it works more as an event venue than a walk-in nudist park. Accommodation ranges from tent sites to cabins and rooms. Contact the center for the current event calendar before planning a stay.
Steph's Pond
Private ResortA small private naturist property with a swimming pond on Eaton Road in Williamson, Wayne County, near Lake Ontario east of Rochester. It is one of only a handful of landed naturist venues in western New York, and The Naturist Society's Network still lists it in 2026. Its old website no longer works, so contact it through the Network listing before planning a visit.
Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalStrawberry Park Hot Springs is a privately owned hot springs resort in the forested hills about seven miles north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Natural hot water feeds a series of stone-walled pools set along Hot Spring Creek: a large main pool that grades from warm to hot, plus several smaller, hotter and more secluded pools, reaching about 104 F. The setting is rustic, with timber changing huts, a creek running through, and snow all around in winter. The clothing policy is time-based: swimsuits are required during the day, and clothing becomes optional after dark, when minors are not allowed. The site also rents rustic cabins, covered wagons, a caboose and tent sites, and offers water-therapy sessions. Dogs, outside alcohol, smoking and RVs are not allowed. Visits are by reservation only, and it gets busy year round, with evenings especially popular for soaking under the stars.
Sun Aura Resort
Private ResortSun Aura is a privately run, adults-only clothing-optional campground on about 300 wooded acres off State Road 10 in Newton County, northwest Indiana, roughly 75 miles south of Chicago. It occupies one of the oldest nudist sites in the country: the grounds opened in 1933 as Club Zoro, founded by Chicago lawyer Alois Knapp, and later became the notorious Naked City under the Drost family until it closed in 1986. After several owners, including a spell as Sunspot, it now trades as Sun Aura. The 63-foot concrete leg built as a sundial in the Naked City era still stands on the grounds. Accommodation is a mix of RV sites with hookups, a tent area and rental cabins. Facilities include an Olympic-size pool, a smaller conversation pool, a hot tub, a sauna, pool tables, a clubhouse with Wi-Fi and a smoke-free roundhouse used for themed dances on Friday and Saturday nights; food comes from an on-site barbecue outfit. Clothing is optional across the property, but nudity is required in the pools and hot tub, and photography of any kind is banned. Guests must be over 21, and both couples and singles are accepted. The atmosphere is social and party-oriented rather than family-focused.
Sun Ridge Resort
Private ResortSun Ridge Resort is a privately run nudist resort and campground on 42 acres of pine woods along a ridge in Sterling, in the rural northeast corner of Connecticut near the Rhode Island line. It calls itself New England's premier nudist resort, and the state tourism site lists it as a scenic nudist resort with about 95 wooded, level sites. It displays AANR affiliation. Accommodation consists of tent sites, RV sites and a handful of rental cabins. Facilities include a pool and hot tub, a pavilion with billiards and a large TV, tennis and volleyball courts, woodland trails and a community campfire. The social calendar includes themed dance parties, karaoke nights and potluck dinners. A campground listing says nudity is required around the pool and hot tub. Overnight stays are restricted to couples, the resort stresses a safe and comfortable atmosphere for women, and it has a zero-tolerance policy on inappropriate behaviour. The season runs from mid-May to late September; the 2026 season has ended and the resort reopens in 2027.
Sunny Haven Recreation Park
Private ResortSunny Haven Recreation Park is a private, member-run cooperative nudist park on Anderson Road in Granger, a few miles northeast of South Bend in northern Indiana. Founded in 1947, it is one of the older family nudist clubs in the Midwest and is listed by the American Association for Nude Recreation. Members own and run the park, and it is aimed at families and couples rather than a party crowd. The grounds reportedly include a heated pool, a hot tub and a sauna, a seasonal restaurant serving weekend brunch in summer, and space for volleyball and horseshoes. Camping covers RV and tent pitches as well as members' chalets. The South Bend tourism board lists it among local attractions and notes its reputation for being clean and friendly. As a co-op club, it lets prospective members visit before joining, and members of other recognised nudist clubs can usually come as guests. Nudity is the norm on the grounds. The season follows the northern Indiana summer, with activity concentrated between late spring and early autumn.
Sunny Rest
Private ResortSunny Rest is a commercial clothes-free resort on about 190 acres of rolling, partly wooded land on the side of Blue Mountain near Palmerton, Carbon County, at the southern edge of the Poconos. Founded in 1945, it is one of the oldest nudist resorts in the eastern United States and sits about two hours from New York and within easy reach of Philadelphia. It draws a broad crowd, from families with young children to retirees, and it promotes daily entertainment and a full events calendar through the summer. Facilities include a pool, whirlpool, sauna, sports areas, a restaurant and on-site massage. Guests can stay in motel-style rooms (rates include breakfast and grounds fees), cabins, RV sites or first-come tent pitches, and there are seasonal and year-round sites for regulars. Nudity is encouraged everywhere when the weather allows and is required in the pool and hot tub, where bottoms are not allowed. The resort opens from late spring to early autumn and closes over winter.
Sunny Sands Resort
Private ResortSunny Sands is a nudist community and RV resort in the countryside of northwest Volusia County, near Pierson, between DeLand and the Ocala National Forest. It opened in 1963 on around 40 acres and for decades ran as a traditional family nudist resort, known for its pool, clubhouse and a small golf course played in the nude. Today it is managed more as a residential nudist community: new manufactured homes are sold for weekend, seasonal or full-time use, and full-hookup RV sites take rigs up to 42 feet for stays from a weekend to a year. Day visitors can use the common grounds, including the clubhouse, picnic area and pool, but there are no overnight privileges on a day pass. Nudity is welcome everywhere and required in the pool, where guests must shower first and sit on a towel; lingerie and suggestive clothing are banned, as are speakers, glass, drones and photographing anyone without consent. Older guides describe a restaurant and bar, petanque and horseshoes. The resort has hosted Florida Young Naturists events. It is open year-round, and the sub-tropical climate makes winter the busiest season.
Sunset Mountain
Private ResortAn adults-only (18+) nudist venue on a working cattle farm above the Elk River near Noel in the south-west corner of Missouri. It is reservation-only and offers RV and tent camping, a few rental accommodations, hiking trails, a hot tub and a sun deck. Bookings must be made and paid at least 24 hours ahead. It is listed by The Naturist Society and appears in AANR's business listings.
Sunshower Country Club
Unofficial / ToleratedSunshower Country Club is a family-oriented, member-run nudist club near Centerville in east-central Indiana, roughly an hour's drive from Indianapolis, Dayton and Cincinnati. Founded in 1959, it has more than 200 members from five states and is affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) and its Midwest region, as well as The Naturist Society. The club occupies more than 120 acres of rural land with a swimming pool and a shaded poolside picnic area, pickleball, pétanque, water volleyball, miniten and 'dirty bird' (a badminton variant), hiking trails, bird watching and a game room with shuffleboard and darts; sports equipment is free to use, and there are quiet, secluded corners for sunbathing. Overnight options are modest: 16 pull-through RV sites with 30-amp (some 50-amp) power, tent camping and eight rental units. The visitor season runs from early May to late September, while members can use the grounds all year. Events through the summer include a 5K run and walk, a bike rally and holiday weekends. Bring a towel to sit on.
Sunsport Gardens
Unofficial / ToleratedSunsport Gardens is a family nudist resort in Loxahatchee Groves, in rural western Palm Beach County about 30 minutes inland from West Palm Beach. It has operated continuously since the mid-1960s and is listed by the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR). The grounds cover around 40 acres of tropical gardens, woodland trails and ponds used for fishing and paddling. Facilities include a heated pool and spa, a sauna, tennis, pétanque, volleyball and water volleyball courts, a nature trail, a playground and a small restaurant. It hosts full-time residents, winter seasonal visitors and day guests, with rental cabins, rooms and trailers, and sites for RVs, trailers and tents. Unlike many Florida resorts, Sunsport is not clothing-optional: a sign at the entrance tells arrivals that nudity is expected. The resort is strongly oriented towards families and young people, running a week-long Family Youth Camp every July and regular weekends for young naturist adults, and it welcomes nudists of all ages, genders, sexual identities and abilities. Its long-running Mid-Winter Naturist Festival each February features workshops, personal-growth sessions and the arts.
Suwannee Valley Resort
Private ResortSuwannee Valley Resort is a commercial clothing-optional resort in the woods near the Suwannee River at White Springs, in north Florida close to the I-75/I-10 junction. It is an AANR member resort and today admits adults aged 21 and over only. Most guests come in RVs: all RV sites are pull-through with full hookups (30 and 50 amp), and there are tent sites with or without power, rental RVs and small and deluxe cabins. Facilities include a pool and spa, a lodge used as a live-music venue, an outdoor band stage with a fire pit, a bar and food service, a game room, pickleball, a nine-hole chip-and-putt golf course, walking trails, a laundry and a dog park. The pool and spa are nude only; elsewhere guests may dress as they like, except in the dog park, where clothes are required. Themed weekends and live music fill the calendar, and the mild north Florida climate keeps it busy from autumn through spring. Single men and women can come for a first visit on weekday afternoons.
Tecopa Hot Springs (county bathhouses)
Informal / TraditionalIndoor mineral bathhouses beside the county-owned Tecopa Hot Springs Campground, in the Mojave Desert at the south-eastern edge of Death Valley. Separate men's and women's pools are used nude: swimwear is not allowed, and bathers shower before entering. The setting is a quiet desert hamlet with RV and tent sites, dark night skies and the Amargosa River badlands close by. Private solo soaks are offered for an extra fee.
Tenakee Hot Springs Bathhouse
Informal / TraditionalA historic community bathhouse built over a natural hot spring on the waterfront of tiny Tenakee Springs, on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska. Bathing is nude only, with no swimwear in the tub, so men and women have separate daily hours. Bathers wash with soap before getting in. The town owns the bathhouse, a volunteer committee runs it, and it is kept going by donations.
Terwilliger Hot Springs (Cougar)
Unofficial / ToleratedTerwilliger Hot Springs, also called Cougar Hot Springs, is a series of natural soaking pools in the Willamette National Forest east of Eugene, managed by the US Forest Service as a fee day-use site. Hot water emerges from the hillside in an old-growth ravine above Cougar Reservoir and is channelled down four rock-lined pools stepped one below another, each 3 to 12 feet across and around 2 to 3 feet deep. The top pool runs at about 112°F and the lowest at about 85°F, so soakers can move down the cascade to cooler water. The springs are clothing-optional, and nudity is common in the pools, but it must not be visible from the Aufderheide Scenic Byway (Forest Road 19). The site sits on a short forest trail lined with ferns and moss-covered trees, and the 2018 Terwilliger Fire left visible burn scars nearby. Rules are strict: no alcohol, no pets (service animals only), no camping at the springs and no visits after 10 pm. There are vault toilets at the car park, composting toilets near the pools and potable water. Weekends are often crowded, and the fee is collected on site.
The Gargoyle House
Private ResortThe Gargoyle House is a privately owned lodge in the hills above Wells River, a village in the town of Newbury on the Vermont side of the Connecticut River, just across from Woodsville, New Hampshire. It is let as a whole or by the room through the gay travel site misterb&b, where it is marketed as a clothing-optional guesthouse for men, with five bedrooms and about fifteen beds sleeping up to 24 people, four bathrooms and breakfast included. The house stands in roughly sixteen acres of forest with walking trails and has a wood-fired sauna and hot tub, a gym, decks, a kitchen and an upstairs lounge with a media centre and games. The whole lodge is also hired out to naturist groups: in May 2025 Naturist New Hampshire took it over for an all-gender, clothing-optional afternoon party with use of the sauna, hot tub and trails, open to members and non-members. Nudity is allowed throughout the house during such events. The lodge has several floors, which can be difficult for people with limited mobility. It is a small private rental rather than a resort, so there is no day-visitor gate and no fixed season.
The Island Group
Private ResortOne of Florida's oldest nudist clubs, founded in 1954 on part of the former Dupree Gardens in Land O' Lakes. It is a member-owned, not-for-profit club for adults 18 and over, with no paid staff, and it encourages visitors to bring their own food and drink. A screened dining room, kitchen and outdoor grills are on site. It is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and visitors must RSVP first.
The Magic Circle
Private ResortThe Magic Circle is a clothing-optional camping area of roughly 450 acres on Bureau of Land Management land in the La Posa South Long-Term Visitor Area, about three miles south of Quartzsite. It is not a club or resort and charges no membership dues; campers pay the BLM visitor-area fee and can stay through the winter season, roughly September to April, with nearby water and dump stations. Volunteers organise potlucks, yoga and movie nights, and a loop trail of nearly three miles circles the nude area. The wider LTVA around it is not clothing optional.

The Schvitz
Private ResortThe Schvitz is a historic communal bathhouse on Oakland Avenue in Detroit's North End. The building went up in 1918 as a community hall for Jacob Shevitz and was converted in the late 1920s into an Eastern European-style bathhouse, which ran for decades as the Oakland Baths. Detroit preservationist Paddy Lynch bought it in 2017, restored it while keeping its old character, and reopened it in 2020 as a wellness and social space. It centres on hot, steamy saunas in the Russian banya tradition, with massage and other treatments. It is run as a commercial bathhouse, not a naturist club. Sessions are divided by gender on most days, and in those single-sex sessions guests traditionally bathe nude; mixed sessions, held on some evenings, require swimsuits. A 2023 report gave men-only hours on Sunday morning, Wednesday and Thursday and women-only hours on Sunday afternoon and Tuesday, but schedules change, so check before going. It is open year-round and is especially popular in Michigan's winter.
The Sequoians
Private ResortThe Sequoians is a membership-based nudist club on about 80 acres of oak, bay and madrone woodland at the top of Cull Canyon Road in Castro Valley, in the East Bay hills about half an hour from San Francisco. Founded in the mid-1940s, it calls itself the only clothes-free club in Northern California and is run by its members rather than as a commercial resort; a handful of members live on site. The grounds include a heated pool, a hot tub, a bocce court and open lawns, plus seven trails for nude hiking, and two regional parks border the property. Camping is for tents, trailers and RVs up to 35 feet, with water and electricity but no dump station. Nudity is the rule on the common grounds and in the pool and hot tub, and clothing is required when crossing public land. Photography is banned and there is no mobile signal. Visitors come on weekends from April to October; weekday and winter access is reserved for full members and AANR or INF card holders who book. Saturday-night potlucks and an annual open house with free entry for first-timers anchor the social calendar.
The Willamettans
Private ResortThe Willamettans is a member-run co-operative nudist club on just over 44 acres of forest at the end of Parsons Creek Road, beyond the village of Marcola in the Mohawk Valley, about 30 miles northeast of Eugene. Its roots go back to a group of Corvallis-area couples who began meeting in 1948; the club bought this land in 1953. Around 450 members own and run it, with a small paid office staff, and members are expected to do volunteer chores. The tree canopy keeps much of the grounds shaded. Facilities include a lodge, a 9-foot-deep swimming pool that is the social hub, a sauna and hot tub, tennis and bocce courts, pickleball, a craft room, a dog park, a bar that hosts karaoke and themed nights, a small gift shop and the Sunshine Cafe. Visitors and members can rent cabins or camp. The grounds are clothing optional, but clothing is not allowed in the pool, sauna or hot tub. Sexual conduct is banned and photography is restricted to private areas with everyone's consent. The club is open all year, though winter activity moves indoors. In August 2026 it hosted the 95th AANR national convention, its first time doing so, and was fully booked.
The Woods Campground
Private ResortAn LGBTQIA+ themed, membership-only camping resort for adults 18 and over, set on 161 private wooded acres outside Lehighton in Pennsylvania's Carbon County. It opened in 2004. The whole property is clothing-optional except the café dining room, and standard nudist etiquette such as sitting on towels applies. There are tent and RV sites, about three dozen cabins and park-model homes, a pool, a fitness centre, hiking trails and a busy programme of themed weekends.
Tiger Mountain Family Nudist Park
Private ResortTiger Mountain Family Nudist Park is a member-owned nudist park on the wooded western flank of Tiger Mountain, just south of Issaquah and about half an hour east of Seattle. The club dates back to the mid-1940s and was long known as Fraternity Snoqualmie before adopting its current name. Members run and maintain the grounds themselves, and the park is firmly family oriented: guests range from infants to seniors, and its rules state that anyone seeking sexual activity should go elsewhere. Facilities include pools, hot tubs and a sauna, a clubhouse, sand and water volleyball, bonfire areas and forest trails, with weekend potlucks and seasonal parties. Accommodation ranges from free tent pitches and short-term vehicle camping to small rental 'bird houses', a cabin with linens and RV lots with or without power. Nudity is required in the pools, hot tubs and sauna; first-time visitors need not undress elsewhere, but returning guests are expected to when the weather allows. Photography needs board approval, everyone has a background check, and children must stay with their parents. The welcome centre runs from May to September.
Timberfell Resort
Private ResortTimberfell Resort is a membership-based camping resort for gay men on 189 private acres in the foothills of east Tennessee, outside Greeneville. Opened in 1978, it bills itself as the oldest gay campground in the United States, and it was long known as Timberfell Lodge. It is a commercial operation rather than a naturist club: clothing is optional across the grounds, and guests must be 21 or older. Under new ownership it has been expanding and redeveloping, with around 72 cabins and rooms for rent, from the historic lodge and barn-complex rooms to small cabins and a row of mountain-view cabins, plus RV sites with full hookups and tent sites with power and water. A 32-room hotel with baths is planned. Facilities include a pool, sauna and steam room, a dance club and outdoor stage, a restaurant and bars, a shop, about two miles of hiking trails, golf-cart rental and Wi-Fi. A busy programme of themed weekends and shows runs through the year, and the resort now advertises itself as open year-round, although the pool is seasonal. Weekday room rates are discounted.
Travelites Nudist Retreat
Private ResortA nudist retreat and club on Horrell Hill Road in Hopkins, south-east of Columbia in the South Carolina Midlands. Listed by both AANR and The Naturist Society, it gives central South Carolina a landed nudist venue in a part of the state with few naturist options. Visitors should contact the club through its listings before arriving, as access is by arrangement.
Triangle Recreation Camp
Private ResortA queer-run, LGBTQ+ membership campground on 80 forested acres in the Cascade foothills, about 21 miles east of Granite Falls on the Mountain Loop Highway. It is open to adults 21 and over from mid-April to early October and is known as a clothing-optional retreat. It offers tent and RV camping and holds themed party weekends through the season. There is no mobile signal at camp.
Turtle Back Mesa B&B

Like most northern clubs, it is busiest from late spring to early autumn, when the outdoor pool and beach are in use, though the indoor pool extends the season. Recent nightly camping rates on listing sites have been around $60 to $85.
Twin Ponds Lodge

The lodge opens from March to December. Members can buy a day pass or stay over in a tent site, a cabin, a travel trailer or a permanent tent, and there are full-hookup RV spaces. Social life centres on the lodge itself, with karaoke, billiards tournaments, weekly potluck dinners, games and parties. A 2023 local comment noted the lodge had recently gained a liquor licence. The property is named for the two ponds on its grounds. Little else is published about it, and prices are given only on request.
Two Creeks Campground
Private ResortTwo Creeks is a privately owned clothing-optional campground for adults on about 100 secluded acres in Pine County, east of Sandstone and northeast of Hinckley, roughly 90 minutes from the Twin Cities and an hour south of Duluth. It sits between two state forests close to the Wisconsin border, and two creeks run through the wooded property, giving it its name. Guests must be 21 or older, and no children are allowed; it describes itself as LGBTQ+ friendly and open to singles and couples of any orientation. The clothing policy is genuinely optional: guests may be nude, partly dressed or clothed, and pressuring others is not tolerated. Facilities include modern showers and toilets with hot water, a dump station, sites with water, sewer and electricity (many with 50-amp service), Wi-Fi, picnic tables and firewood for sale, plus areas for sports, dances and potluck dinners. There is no mobile phone coverage. Accommodation covers tent and RV sites and rental cabins, camper trailers and tents. The season runs from late April or May to mid-October.
Umpqua Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalUmpqua Hot Springs, also called Toketee Hot Springs, is a cluster of terraced pools on an orange travertine bluff above the North Umpqua River in Umpqua National Forest, about 60 miles east of Roseburg. Hot water rises at the top of the slope and spills down through a series of small rock-lined pools, so the upper pools are the hottest, at up to around 115F, and the lower ones cooler. The top pool sits under a small open wooden shelter, and the others look straight out over the river canyon and forest. It is undeveloped and unstaffed: there is no trash service, soap and glass are banned, and visitors must pack everything out. Clothing is optional by long custom and nude soaking is common, though plenty of people wear swimsuits; dark ones are best, as the minerals stain. The springs are hugely popular, especially on summer weekends, when the pools can be packed. Since a 2026 Forest Service order the area is day use only, with no camping and no access between sunset and sunrise. The access road is usually gated in winter, adding a long walk or ski in.
Valley View Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalNatural warm-spring pools high on the western slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains above the San Luis Valley, run on a clothing-optional basis by the non-profit Orient Land Trust. The former owners set up the trust in 2001 to protect the springs and the surrounding Everson Ranch. Soakers can choose from several rock-lined ponds and a pool. There are also trails to the old Orient Mine, whose large summer bat colony is a well-known sight.
Valley View Recreation Club

Open daily in summer, it has a pool, pickleball court, campsites and fully equipped rental cabins, with organised events most weekends. Verde Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalVerde Hot Springs sits beside the Verde River in Coconino National Forest, in the remote canyon country southeast of Camp Verde near the old Childs hydroelectric plant. A resort built here in the 1920s burned down in 1962, and what remains is a set of concrete foundations, steps and tubs fed by warm spring water seeping from the cliff, all covered in decades of colourful graffiti. There is one main soaking pool and several smaller cliffside pools. For decades it has been one of Arizona's best-known places for nude soaking, and visitors should expect to see nude people both at the springs and on the trail, including families. It is completely undeveloped: there are no facilities at the springs, and you must pack out everything. The walk in is short and fairly flat, but it ends with a wade across the Verde River, which is safe only at low flow and can be dangerous or impossible after rain or snowmelt. The cooler months are the best time to go, as summer heat in the canyon is intense.
Vitambi Springs Resort

Wasatch Sun Club
Private ResortA clothing-optional guesthouse in a quiet Salt Lake Valley neighbourhood, about 20 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City and within reach of the Wasatch ski resorts. The owners, who are AANR members, rent two rooms for overnight stays and welcome day visitors to the pool, hot tub, fire pit and covered patio. It is one of very few nude-friendly places to stay in Utah.
Weir Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalWeir Creek Hot Springs sits in the forest above the Lochsa River in north-central Idaho, about 68 miles east of Kooskia on US-12 and roughly ten minutes' drive west of Jerry Johnson Hot Springs. Hot water at around 118°F (48°C) seeps from a cliff into a small side canyon of Weir Creek and feeds a handful of volunteer-built pools with gravel or sand bottoms, some edged with split logs. The main pool, on a rock ledge looking out over the creek and cedar forest, holds about ten people and usually runs at or a little under 105°F; a smaller, more secluded upper pool lies against the cliff, and seasonal lower pools sit near the creek and are cooler. There is a faint sulphur smell. Clothing is optional by custom and guides say to expect a mix of swimsuits and nude soakers, especially on busy summer weekends. Because the springs are only half a mile from the highway, they have long been popular and heavily used, and the Forest Service has repeatedly cited litter, human waste, vandalism, drug and alcohol use and night-time injuries on icy slopes. Since 2022 the area has been closed at night, and the regional tourism board has since listed it as closed until further notice, so check before going.
Whispering Oaks

Accommodation includes recently added two-bedroom park models with a kitchen near the pool and event hall, plus RV and camping sites, and many members keep homes or seasonal sites there. White Thorn Lodge

It has offered social nudism since 1961 and was incorporated in 1965 as the Western Pennsylvania Health and Athletic Association. It sits within about an hour of Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Erie, Canton and Wheeling. The grounds are well equipped: a heated 28-by-60-foot pool and jetted hot tub (both wheelchair accessible), a sauna, outdoor showers, a large clubhouse with a patio for live music, DJs, dinners and yoga, two hard and three deep-sand volleyball courts, pickleball and tennis courts, bocce, a playing field and a children's playground. An old swimming pond has a floating dock and pavilion, and a member-run snack bar serves weekend breakfasts and lunches. Camping ranges from tent pitches to RV sites in the Flats with full hookups, and there are four member-built rental cabins; many members keep their own cottages. The club opens from Memorial Day weekend to mid-September and is aimed squarely at families.
Wilbur Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalAn off-grid health sanctuary in an 1,800-acre nature preserve in the hills of Colusa County, about two and a half hours north of San Francisco. Mineral water flows through a series of flumes at graded temperatures under a covered bathhouse, and bathing in the springs is clothing-optional. There is a historic hotel with a shared kitchen, and guests can hike and cycle the preserve's trails. It is a quiet, contemplative place rather than a party spot.
Wild Willy’s Hot Springs
Informal / TraditionalWild Willy's, also known as Crowley Hot Springs, is a pair of natural soaking pools in the open sagebrush of the Long Valley Caldera in Mono County, eastern California, at about 6,800 feet and roughly 13 miles east of Mammoth Lakes. The setting is the main attraction: from the water you look west across the valley to the snow-capped Sierra Nevada, with Glass Mountain to the east and steaming ground and salt-crusted flats all around. The larger pool, at the end of the boardwalk, is roughly heart-shaped, about three feet deep and big enough for ten to fifteen people; a smaller, slightly hotter pool beside a rock outcrop holds about five. Water emerges at 102-110°F and the pools usually sit at 98-102°F depending on weather, with a small creek running alongside where you can find cooler spots. It is one of the best-known springs in the area and is often busy, especially at sunset and on weekends, though its size spreads people out. Hot spring guides list clothing as optional, and nude soaking is common, particularly after dark and in quieter hours, with swimsuits also usual. The springs are open all day and night and many people come to soak under the stars.
Wildwood Naturist's Resort

There is no food service, so visitors bring their own supplies. Overnight options include tent sites, full-hookup RV sites and non-smoking rental cabins. The resort is open all year, though visitors are received only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Nudity is the norm: clothing is worn only in bad weather or for health reasons, never in the pool or hot tub, and street clothes are considered out of place. Singles are welcome, but sexual advances lead to expulsion.
Laws & local rules in United States
Public nudity is largely prohibited in the US under indecent exposure laws which vary significantly by state. Vermont has no state-level law against public nudity, making it unique. Florida designates specific beaches as clothing-optional (Haulover Beach, Blind Creek State Park). Federal jurisprudence under the First Amendment has occasionally recognised nude expression in protests, though states regulate for public decency standards. Most states prohibit exposure of "sexual organs" in public under statutes similar to Florida Statute § 800.03.
