About Nude Beach
This is the informal nude beach on the American River below Auburn, in the steep canyon just downstream of where the North and Middle Forks meet, inside Auburn State Recreation Area. The park, run by California State Parks for the US Bureau of Reclamation, covers miles of river canyon with oak woodland, granite outcrops and swimming holes, and the confluence area is one of its busiest spots in summer. Local news has described a small beach on the north side of the river below the confluence that has been used by nude sunbathers for at least three decades, and a long-time Sacramento columnist called it perhaps the most frequented nude spot in the region. It is a river beach of sand and rock beside the current rather than a broad strand, and rafters floating past are part of the scenery. The river here is cold and can be dangerous: water levels fluctuate, the bottom is uneven and there are rocks and snags, and park officials have warned visitors away from the river during high water, so it is best used late in summer when flows are lower. There are no facilities at the beach itself.
Getting there
Drive Highway 49 from Auburn down into the American River canyon toward Cool to the confluence area at the bottom, where roadside and lot parking serve the Auburn SRA trails and fill on summer weekends. Older directions describe crossing the bridge over the North Fork, parking on the far side, and following the river downstream on foot past a pedestrian footbridge to the beach. Expect rough, rocky paths and a scramble to the water. No public transport; not wheelchair accessible.
What visitors say
Local reports describe a long-established, low-key nude spot used mainly by regulars from the Sacramento area, with rafters and hikers passing by. Concerns raised by the city and some residents have focused on sexual activity rather than nude sunbathing itself. River safety is the most repeated warning: currents, cold water, snags and fluctuating flows near the confluence make swimming hazardous, and the park has at times told visitors to stay out of the river during high water. Recent first-hand accounts are scarce.

Legal context
Nudity is not authorised in California state park units, but a park ranger told local TV he could not recall a citation for nudity here in about 30 years. The Auburn City Council once asked State Parks to crack down on nudity and sex along this stretch; State Parks said its few rangers treat nudity as a low priority (undated reports, likely 2009-2010s).
Naturism at Nude Beach sits under United States's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
