About Sculptured Beach
Sculptured Beach lies on Drakes Bay in Point Reyes National Seashore, about two miles southeast of Limantour Beach and within the Phillip Burton Wilderness. It gets its name from the eroded rock formations along the shore: sandstone and mudstone outcrops carved into arches, shelves and pillars, with a small blowhole and good tidepools at low tide. The beach is narrow and rugged, backed by steep crumbling bluffs, with stretches of sand between the rocks. Because the only way in is on foot, usually via Coast Camp or a tide-dependent walk along the shore from Limantour, it is rarely busy, and nude sunbathing has long been accepted away from the access points as long as nobody complains. There are no facilities on the beach itself. Fog, wind and cold water are the norm much of the summer, and the best days tend to be in early autumn or on clear spring afternoons. Whales, dolphins and seals are often seen offshore. Storms in early 2023 damaged the old Sculptured Beach Trail from the bluff, which the park no longer maintains.
Getting there
From Highway 1 at Olema take Bear Valley Road to Limantour Road and drive to the Limantour Beach lots (large gravel lot plus a small paved lot). Walk about 2.1-2.4 miles southeast along the beach (passable only at low tide; two creek mouths to cross), or take the Coast Trail inland to Coast Camp and the short Santa Maria Beach access trail, then walk 0.8 miles along the sand: about 5.4 miles round trip from Limantour. Do not use the storm-damaged Sculptured Beach Trail. Vault toilets and water at Limantour and Coast Camp. Pets prohibited. No transit. Not wheelchair accessible.
What visitors say
Hikers rave about the rock formations, tidepools and solitude, and many say the walk itself is a highlight. Nude visitors report that the beach is quiet and that undressing well away from Limantour and Coast Camp causes no problems. The main warnings are about tides (the beach route can be cut off at high tide), fog and wind, and the cold water. Some note the old bluff trail is closed after storm damage.

Legal context
Point Reyes National Seashore does not designate any clothing-optional area; nudity is tolerated by custom away from access points, and federal rules prohibit only lewd behaviour, with complaints the usual trigger for rangers to intervene (as reported in 2010). Nudity near the busy Limantour access is likely to draw complaints.
Naturism at Sculptured Beach sits under United States's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
