About Playalinda Beach

Playalinda Beach is the southern, Brevard County district of Canaveral National Seashore, on an undeveloped barrier island east of Titusville with Kennedy Space Center's launch pads in view to the south. A single park road runs north behind the dunes past 13 numbered parking areas, each with a boardwalk to the sand. Nude sunbathing has traditionally happened at the very north end, from the lot 13 crossover northward toward Klondike Beach, with families tending to stay near lot 12 and the crowd thinning as you walk north. The beach itself is wide, soft sand with steep dunes and sea oats behind it, open Atlantic surf, no shade and no development of any kind. It is one of the best-known nude beaches in Florida and draws a mix of local regulars, couples and visitors from Orlando. A major caveat: hurricanes Ian and Nicole (2022) and Tropical Storm Imelda plus king tides (2025) badly damaged the dunes, and in late 2025 the park reopened Playalinda with parking areas 8 to 13 and the road north of Eddy Creek still closed. The beach also closes around rocket launches.

Getting there

From I-95 exit 220 take SR 406 east through Titusville and across the Max Brewer bridge, then bear right onto SR 402 through Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to the seashore's Playalinda entrance station. Entrance is $25 per vehicle (7 days), $20 per motorcycle, $15 per walker or cyclist; cards only. Normally you drive to lot 13 at the north end and cross its boardwalk. As of the November 2025 NPS notice, lots 8-13 were closed and beach access was only from lot 8, which means a long walk north on the sand; check the posted list at the fee station. No public transport; boardwalks then soft sand, not wheelchair friendly.

What visitors say

Reviewers praise the wild, undeveloped setting, the dunes and the chance to watch rocket launches, and describe the lot 13 nudist community as friendly and easy for first-timers. Frequent complaints are the entry fee for a short visit, basic and smelly toilets, no shade, no vendors and weak phone signal at the north end. Lot 13 fills quickly on weekends. Some reports say textile visitors near lot 12 object to nudity, and that the atmosphere farther north is more social. Since 2022 many reviews mention closures and storm damage, so visitors advise checking the park's social media first.

Legal context

Brevard County Ordinance 95-21 (1995) bans public nudity and applies in the seashore, and a federal appropriations rider has barred the NPS from designating a clothing-optional area in Brevard County. In practice enforcement at lot 13 has been rare, and in January 2024 a park spokesperson said nude people are seen at the north end but the park does not designate areas; lewd conduct is reprimanded.

Naturism at Playalinda Beach sits under United States's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Frequently asked questions

Is Playalinda a legal nude beach?

Not officially. Brevard County bans public nudity, but nude sunbathing at the far north end near lot 13 has long been tolerated and rarely enforced; lewd behaviour is cited.

Is the nude area open right now?

After 2025 storm damage the NPS reopened Playalinda on 14 November 2025 with lots 8-13 closed and access only at lot 8. Check the park's Facebook or the fee station before going.

Where is the nude section?

At the northernmost parking area, lot 13, and north of its boardwalk. When lot 13 is busy, nudists spread south to lots 11-12.

What does it cost?

$25 per car for a 7-day pass, $20 per motorcycle, $15 per person on foot or bike; card only.

Does the beach close for rocket launches?

Yes, the Playalinda district closes to inbound traffic before launches from Kennedy Space Center, sometimes for the whole day.
