About Kaihalulu Red Sand Beach
Kaihalulu, better known as Red Sand Beach, is a small cove on the south side of Ka'uiki Head, the cinder cone that frames Hana Bay on Maui's east coast. The iron-rich cinder of the eroding cone gives the sand its deep red to maroon colour, set against black lava, green ironwood trees and turquoise water. A natural barrier of jagged lava rocks across the mouth of the cove breaks the open-ocean waves and creates a sheltered pool for wading and snorkelling in calm conditions, though currents near the gaps, especially at the north end, are strong and swimming beyond the barrier is dangerous. Because the beach is isolated and only reached by an exposed cliff path, it has long been used clothing-optional and visitors should expect a few nude sunbathers. There are no lifeguards, restrooms, showers or bins. The access trail crosses private land and is narrow, crumbling and slippery, and injuries and helicopter rescues are reported regularly.
Getting there
The unofficial trail starts at the end of Uakea Road in Hana town, crossing the grass past the end of the pavement; parking there is very limited, so park legally near Hana Ballpark and walk, without blocking driveways or gates. The path follows a steep, narrow ridge of loose red cinder and ironwood needles above the sea, with no railings, past an old Japanese cemetery; it is short but slow going. Wear sturdy shoes, not flip-flops. The route crosses private property and signs have warned against trespassing. Not wheelchair accessible; no transit.
What visitors say
Visitors describe the cove as one of Maui's most striking beaches and a calm place to float inside the reef when seas are flat. Nearly all accounts warn about the dangerous trail and emphasise good shoes, and some urge respecting private-property signs or skipping it. Nude sunbathers are commonly mentioned as part of the scene, alongside local teens jumping from rocks.
