About Glass Bar Nude Beach

Glass Bar Island (often written Glassbar Island) is an island in the Willamette River on the south-eastern edge of the Eugene-Springfield area of Oregon, near Seavey Loop Road. It is state-owned land set up as a river-access-only park, and local people have used it as a clothing-optional spot since about the 1960s, making it one of the longest-running informal nude areas in the Willamette Valley. What passes for a beach here is river shoreline: gravel bars and banks along the Willamette, good for sunbathing, wading and fishing, with a few picnic tables, barbecues and posted park rules. Regulars include anglers and boaters who come to fish or sunbathe nude, and some volunteer on trash clean-ups and invasive-plant removal. Oregon State Parks says the island is maintained for environmental purposes rather than public use and is not sanctioned by the state as clothing-optional, so it is a community-tolerated spot rather than an official nude beach; Lane County has no officially designated nude beach. Because the old walking route is now closed, numbers are small and the island is usually quiet.

Getting there

Access is legally by river only. For decades people walked about 100 yards across adjoining Lane County land from Seavey Loop, but the county posted No Trespassing signs on that route (reported around 2013-2015) to protect a habitat-restoration grant, so arriving on foot that way now means trespassing. Visitors come by canoe, kayak, raft or drift boat on the Willamette, for example launching upstream in Springfield or nearby county parks. There is no parking at the island itself, no public transport and no wheelchair access. Expect to carry everything in and out.

What visitors say

Long-time users describe a quiet, low-key place frequented by a small community of regulars, anglers and boaters who value being able to fish or sunbathe nude in a natural river setting. The main complaint is access: since the county blocked the walking route, getting there by boat takes effort, which keeps numbers low. Volunteers report trash and invasive plants as recurring issues. Local press notes the island's informal status means visitors should be discreet and expect no facilities or management.

Legal context

Oregon State Parks stated in 2025 that Glass Bar Island is not sanctioned as clothing-optional and that visits are at your own risk. Lane Code 6.200.100 prohibits genital exposure in public places, though enforcement in remote areas is uncommon; foot access across county land was closed with No Trespassing signs around 2013-2015.
