About Rock River

The Rock River runs into the West River at the Dummerston-Newfane town line, about eight miles north of Brattleboro, Vermont, and its lower reach is a chain of swimming holes reached from Route 30. The first hole, nearest the road and known locally as Indian Love Call, is a family spot where people keep their clothes on. Upstream, the next site is clothing optional but still mixed and family friendly, and the holes beyond it have long been used nude, with the farthest ones, about a half-hour walk in, traditionally used by gay men. This is not a sandy beach: the river runs over granite boulders, ledges and smooth slabs, with deep, clear pools that can rise fast after rain. Some riverside land is owned by Rock River Preservation, a nonprofit that put up a trail kiosk with user guidelines. On hot weekends the swimming holes are very crowded, with hundreds of cars reported along Route 30, and towns have raised concerns about sanitation, noise and roadside parking. There are no toilets or services.

Getting there

From Brattleboro drive north on Route 30 toward Newfane; the access is just above the Route 30 bridge over the Rock River near Depot Road at the Dummerston-Newfane line. Parking is free on the roadside shoulders and fills quickly on summer weekends; walking along Route 30 is hazardous. A rocky, sometimes flood-damaged trail follows the river upstream, and the farthest swimming holes take about 30 minutes to reach. There is no useful public transport, and the route is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

What visitors say

Visitors love the clear water, deep pools and granite ledges, and describe the upstream holes as a friendly, long-established nude scene with a strong LGBTQ following. People note that the further you walk the more nudity you see, and that the first swimming hole is family and clothed. Common complaints are overcrowding and roadside parking on hot weekends, litter and human waste, bugs, a rough trail after floods, and swift water after rain. Arriving early on weekdays is the usual advice.

Legal context

Vermont has no statewide ban on simple public nudity, though undressing in public can bring a lewd conduct charge and some towns have their own ordinances. Nude use at the upstream Rock River swimming holes has been informally tolerated for decades; local news coverage (2011) focused on traffic, parking and sanitation rather than nudity.

Naturism at Rock River sits under United States's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the nude area on the Rock River?

Not at the first swimming hole by the road, which is family and clothed. Nudity starts at the next site upstream, and the further holes, up to about 30 minutes' walk, are mostly nude.

Is it legal?

Vermont has no statewide ban on simple nudity, and the practice here has long been tolerated, but it is not an officially designated nude area.

Where do I park?

On the shoulders of Route 30 near the bridge at the Dummerston-Newfane line. It fills early on summer weekends; take care walking along the road.

Are there toilets?

No. There are no facilities, so carry out all trash.
