About Black Sands Beach, CO Section

Black Sands Beach is a narrow cove of dark, coarse sand below the cliffs of the Marin Headlands, just west of the Golden Gate on the Marin side, within Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It sits below Conzelman Road between Hawk Hill and Point Bonita, with views back across the Golden Gate to San Francisco and Baker Beach. The beach is reached only by a steep trail and stairs, which keeps numbers down compared with San Francisco's city beaches. Nude sunbathing is an informal custom rather than a designated use: nudists usually settle at the farther ends of the beach, away from the bottom of the stairs, and guides differ on which end is favoured, so look for where others are already undressed. The middle near the trail is mostly clothed day-trippers, picnickers and photographers. The beach is short and gets much smaller at high tide, when waves can reach the cliff base in places. The water is cold Pacific with strong currents and is not suitable for swimming. Fog and wind are common even in summer, so the best nude days are the occasional warm, clear ones, often in late summer and autumn.

Getting there

Drive up Conzelman Road from the Golden Gate Bridge (Alexander Avenue exit) past Hawk Hill and down towards Point Bonita, and park in the small dirt Upper Fisherman's lot, an unsigned pullout between Hawk Hill and Battery Rathbone. Parking is free but fills early on sunny weekends; overflow parking further along adds walking. The Upper Fisherman's Trail drops about 300 feet in 0.3 miles via wooden steps and loose gravel, 20-30 minutes down; the climb back is strenuous. There is a pit toilet at the lot and no water. Not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Visitors consistently describe a beautiful, secluded-feeling cove with striking dark sand and Golden Gate views, and note that the stair climb back up is the main effort. It is described as much quieter than Bay Area city beaches, though hikers and sightseers can appear unexpectedly, particularly on weekends. Opinions differ on how nude it is: some describe it as clothing-optional with nudists at one end, while others say nudity is occasional. Common tips are to arrive early for parking, check tide tables, bring layers for fog and wind, and keep a cover-up handy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Black Sands Beach officially clothing-optional?

No. The National Park Service has not designated it, but nude sunbathing at the far ends of the beach is an informal custom that is generally tolerated.

Where is the nude section?

At the ends of the beach, away from the foot of the stairs. Sources differ on which end, so go to where others are already undressed.

How hard is the hike?

About 0.3 miles and 300 feet of descent on steps and loose gravel. Going down takes 20-30 minutes, and the climb back up is strenuous.

Is there parking and a toilet?

There is a small free dirt lot (Upper Fisherman's) on Conzelman Road with a pit toilet. It fills early on sunny weekends.

Can I swim?

Swimming is not recommended because of the cold water and strong currents, and high tide can cover much of the beach.
