About Hole In The Wall Beach
Hole in the Wall is a secluded cove on the north Santa Cruz County coast, about eight miles north of Santa Cruz near Davenport, within the coastal section of Coast Dairies State Park. It takes its name from the large sea arch at the south end of Panther Beach: the only way in is to walk through that rock tunnel from Panther Beach, and only at low tide. Beyond the arch is a sandy cove backed by tall cliffs, more sheltered and far less visited than Panther itself. Because it is hidden and hard to reach, it is used as a clothing-optional beach, especially on warm days, though nobody is required to undress and clothed visitors are common. The Pacific here is cold and powerful, waves break hard against the arch, and the incoming tide can cut the cove off from Panther Beach, so timing is essential. There are no facilities, no shade beyond the cliffs, and the Central Coast climate means summer highs often stay around the low to mid 70s °F with frequent fog.
Getting there
Park in the unmarked dirt pullouts on the ocean side of Highway 1 about eight miles north of Santa Cruz (if you reach Bonny Doon Beach you have gone too far). A narrow, steep, crumbly path scrambles down the bluff to Panther Beach. Walk south to the big rock arch and go through only at low tide, after watching the wave sets; check the tide table and leave well before the tide turns. No facilities or public transport, and not accessible for wheelchairs.
What visitors say
Visitors describe the walk through the arch as part of the adventure and the cove itself as one of the most beautiful and private on this coast. Nude sunbathing is most common on warm, calm days, and the crowd is mixed. The most repeated warnings concern the tide and surf: the rising tide can trap people on the wrong side of the arch, and waves can surge through it. Guides recommend going with someone who knows the beach, checking tides and weather, and avoiding it after storms. The steep scramble down to Panther Beach also gets frequent mention.
