About College Cove Beach
College Cove is a half-moon of sand about a quarter mile long just north of the town of Trinidad on the Humboldt County coast, part of Trinidad State Beach. Forested bluffs of spruce and alder rise behind it and sea stacks stand offshore. A rocky point splits the beach into two coves, and at high tide you cannot walk between them. The southern cove has the reputation for nude sunbathing: a 2010 Bay Guardian nude-beach guide described about 50 visitors a day there, roughly half nude, mostly young students from nearby Humboldt State (now Cal Poly Humboldt). Clothed families and dog walkers use the beach too, and current tourism guides present it as an ordinary family beach, so nude use is a local custom rather than the norm. The water is very cold and there are no lifeguards. Fog is common on the North Coast, and the warmest, clearest days usually come from late summer into autumn.
Getting there
From US 101 take the Trinidad exit, go west, then turn right onto Stagecoach Road and drive about half a mile to the College Cove trailhead parking on the left (small free lot plus roadside parking; day use sunrise to sunset). A trail of about half a mile runs through the forest and along the bluff, then down a long set of stairs to the sand, a drop of about 120 feet. In April 2024 State Parks closed the College Cove access trail because of erosion; repairs were planned and a later report says it was repaired, so check current status with the park (707-677-3570). Beach-level access from the main Trinidad State Beach is only at low tide.
Amenities
Legal context
College Cove is state park land, and California State Parks has not designated it clothing-optional; its official materials do not mention nudity. Older guides report that sheriff's deputies once raided the beach and issued anti-nudity citations, and no recent enforcement reports were found. Nude use relies on discretion, particularly with families present.
Naturism at College Cove Beach sits under United States's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
