About Blue Lake Resort

Blue Lake Resort is a family-run nudist park in the Rock River Valley of north-western Illinois, about three miles south-east of the village of Erie and roughly 30 miles north-east of the Quad Cities. Founded in 1972, it has long been described as the only landed nudist park in Illinois. The developed grounds take up about 20 acres of sun and shade inside a 98-acre farm property. Instead of a pool, swimming is in a chlorinated pond with a sandy beach, and the clubhouse has a screened porch, a large sun deck, a weekend snack bar and a whirlpool room. Outdoor games include two fenced sand volleyball courts, horseshoes, shuffleboard, petanque and disc golf, and there is a children's playground. Overnight options are about 20 RV spaces with water and electric, tent camping, three motel rooms and one cabin, plus hot showers and a dump station. The park is strict about its nudist character: a 2013 newspaper profile reported that nudity is required for everyone in a party rather than optional, photography is banned, and the site itself says swinging and recruiting are not welcome. The season runs from the first weekend in May to the first weekend in October.

Legal context & local rules

Nudity is lawful on the private grounds; the resort says its facilities are inspected and approved by the State of Illinois each year.

Public nudity is largely prohibited in the US under indecent exposure laws which vary significantly by state. Vermont has no state-level law against public nudity, making it unique. Florida designates specific beaches as clothing-optional (Haulover Beach, Blind Creek State Park). Federal jurisprudence under the First Amendment has occasionally recognised nude expression in protests, though states regulate for public decency standards. Most states prohibit exposure of "sexual organs" in public under statutes similar to Florida Statute § 800.03.

Getting there and visiting

Blue Lake is at 10430 Cooper Road, Erie, Illinois, reached by car via IL-78 or I-88 from the Quad Cities; there is no public transport. Day visits and stays are both possible. Guests are asked to send their full name and address a few days ahead for a background check ($15 per person, paid at the office), and the office is open 8am to 6pm in season (phone 309-507-6897, off from mid-October to mid-April). Families and couples are welcomed; a 2013 report said married couples must come together and only a few single visitors are admitted at a time. Rates are on the resort's rules page; a motel room was $25 a night in 2013.

Alice Falls

Alice Falls is a waterfall and swimming spot on the Ausable River near Keeseville, at the northeastern edge of the Adirondacks. Flat rock ledges beside the falls are used informally for nude sunbathing, including by families. It has no facilities or official status. River currents can be strong after rain, and visitors should respect nearby residents.

Alvord Hot Springs

A privately owned desert soaking spot at the foot of Steens Mountain in south-eastern Oregon. Two rustic concrete pools look out over the white playa of the Alvord Desert. The spring is on a working ranch, and a small fee covers soaking, with bunkhouse rooms and camping nearby. Soaking here is clothing-optional, and the remote setting is known for big skies and stargazing.

Apollo Beach

Apollo Beach is the northern, Volusia County district of Canaveral National Seashore, a federally protected barrier island south of New Smyrna Beach on Florida's Atlantic coast. A park road runs south from the entrance station past five numbered parking areas with boardwalks over the dunes; nude sunbathing happens on the sand south of parking area 5, the last lot before the road ends. A long-standing understanding between naturist groups and rangers dating to 2000 asks people to stay covered until about 150 yards south of that boardwalk, although nude visitors are often seen closer. South of there the beach continues as Klondike Beach, roughly a dozen miles of undeveloped shore with no road access, so the farther you walk the emptier it gets. The beach is wide, soft, pale sand backed by sea oats and dunes, with no shade, no buildings and no vendors. It draws fewer people than Playalinda at the Brevard end of the seashore, mostly because parking is so limited. Volusia County has never passed a public nudity ordinance, which is why this end of the seashore has a calmer legal position than Playalinda. Wildlife sightings (shorebirds, wild hogs, armadillos) are common on the drive in.
