About Gunnison Beach

Gunnison Beach is the ocean beach at Area G on Sandy Hook, the New Jersey unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, near the historic Fort Hancock at the northern tip of the peninsula. It is the largest and best-known nude beach in the northeastern US, used by naturists since the late 1970s, and on hot summer weekends it can draw several thousand people. The National Park Service describes it as clothing-optional; its wider guidance says the traditional nude-use area is part of Area G (South Gunnison) and that nudity outside that zone may be treated as disorderly conduct. The beach is broad, soft sand facing the Atlantic, with views north to the Verrazzano Bridge and Manhattan's skyline across Lower New York Bay. The crowd is diverse in age, ethnicity and orientation. Since about 2021 the park has banned alcohol on all Sandy Hook beaches and limited tents and screens, after complaints about loud music and partying; regulars report a calmer atmosphere since. There are no lifeguards at Gunnison.

Getting there

Drive to the Sandy Hook entrance at the southern end of the peninsula (Highlands) and follow the park road north toward Fort Hancock to Lot G. Beach parking is $20 per car per day (season pass $100) from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 8am-6pm, cashless; arrive before 8am to park free. Lot G is large but full by late morning on summer weekends and the park closes to new cars when lots fill. From the lot, a trail at its east end leads to the beach plaza and sand. In summer, Seastreak ferries run from Manhattan to Sandy Hook with a shuttle to the beaches.

What visitors say

Most visitors describe a friendly, diverse and busy beach with a party feel on summer weekends and a quieter vibe on weekdays. The NYC skyline view and clean sand are frequent positives. Complaints focus on parking filling by late morning, the cost of parking, loud music, and occasional gawkers and men who stare or take photos. Regulars say the alcohol ban and ranger presence since 2021 improved behaviour and cleanliness. Many recommend the ferry or arriving very early, and walking toward the quieter ends of the nude area.
