Quiet Queensland coastal stretch near Agnes Water and Town of 1770 with informal clothing-optional use away from the main patrolled beach.

Alexandria Bay, known locally as A-Bay, is a sweep of white sand on the ocean side of Noosa National Park, between Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. It is backed by forested headlands and dunes, with no buildings in sight, and faces the open Pacific, so surf and rips can be strong and there are no lifeguards. For decades A-Bay has been Queensland's best-known nude beach, with Lonely Planet once calling it perhaps the most beautiful of Australia's nude beaches. However, it has never been legal: Queensland is the only mainland state with no legally recognised clothing-optional beach. The tolerance ended in 2023. On 16 April 2023 police issued seven fines of $287 and four warnings for wilful exposure after complaints about predatory and sexual behaviour around the beach. A local MP's survey found most respondents supported a legal nude beach here, and the Queensland Naturist Association has campaigned for it, but no law has changed. Today it remains a popular national park beach for clothed walkers and surfers, and anyone undressing risks a fine.

Armands Beach is a small clothing-optional beach in Armands Bay, on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales, about 9.5 km south of Bermagui near the hamlet of Barragga Bay in Bega Valley Shire. It is a short stretch of sand framed by rocky headlands and coastal bush, with a creek reaching the sea, and a travel guide puts the nude-designated sand at about 250 m. Bega Valley Shire Council declared it a legal clothes-optional beach in November 1993, and the NSW Government's visitor listing describes it as the only clothes-optional beach on the Sapphire Coast. It takes its name from Armand Lemmeric, a Frenchman who farmed the land behind the bay and swam there nude; nude cricket matches were reportedly played on the beach in the 1930s. The beach is unpatrolled and has no toilets or other facilities, and there is very little shade. A local nudist club, the Armands Bay Leisure Group, holds social events here in summer, and the crowd is generally small and relaxed.

Bakers Beach is a long, quiet sweep of sand on Bass Strait inside Narawntapu National Park, between Port Sorell and the mouth of the Tamar River on Tasmania's north coast. Its isolation draws the occasional skinny dipper and nude sunbather, but there is no official clothing-optional status, so walk well away from the camping area and day visitors before undressing. A national parks pass is required for entry, and wombats, wallabies and Forester kangaroos are often seen nearby.

Balding Bay is a small, secluded cove on the north coast of Magnetic Island, off Townsville in north Queensland, between Radical Bay and Horseshoe Bay. It is a short strip of coarse sand framed by large granite boulders and hoop pine-covered slopes, with clear water that is good for snorkelling around the rocks on calm days. There is no road access, which keeps it quiet. Balding Bay is widely known as the island's clothing-optional beach, and travel blogs warn visitors that they should expect to see nude bathers there. It has no legal standing: Queensland has no designated nude beaches, so nudity here is a long-standing local custom rather than a right. Shade is limited to the edges of the beach under the rocks and trees, so early arrivals get the best spots. The crowd is small and mixed, and reports describe it as relaxed and respectful. There are no shops or drinking water; a basic toilet has been reported near the track entrance. In the stinger season (roughly November to May) wear a stinger suit or take local advice before swimming.

Birdie Beach is a long surf beach in Munmorah State Conservation Area on the Central Coast of New South Wales, near Lake Munmorah and Budgewoi, about 100 km north of Sydney. The beach runs for several kilometres below coastal heath and dunes, with Freemans campground and picnic areas behind it. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service states that the northern end of Birdie Beach is a designated nude bathing area; signs on the approach mark the 'unclad bathing' section, and the rest of the beach is for swimwear. It is the Central Coast's only nude beach and draws a mix of locals, campers and day visitors, with the nude section usually uncrowded. The beach is open to the Tasman Sea and unpatrolled, with rips common, so swimming needs care. Some reviews mention unwanted attention from lone men in the dunes on quiet days, which has prompted complaints from couples and women. The park has gated access with set opening hours.

Buchan Point (often written Buchans Point) is a rocky headland and beach on the Captain Cook Highway north of Palm Cove, between Palm Cove and Ellis Beach in Far North Queensland. The secluded beach at the point has been used for nude sunbathing since the 1950s, making it one of the best-known informal nude spots in north Queensland. Nudity is not legal: Queensland has no designated nude beaches, and in 1989 police arrested 11 nude sunbathers here and charged them with indecent exposure. Nudity still happens discreetly, and the beach is popular with a local gay nude social group. Two tropical hazards matter more than the law for most visitors: marine stingers are present from October to May, when you should not swim, and estuarine crocodiles live along this coast, so obey warning signs.

Cable Beach is the famous 22 km strip of white sand on the Indian Ocean about 4-6 km west of Broome's town centre in Western Australia's Kimberley. The southern and central parts, around the Surf Life Saving Club and the resorts, are a normal clothed beach with camel rides at sunrise and sunset. The clothing-optional area is north of the rocks, beyond the beach access road from the main car park, and in practice extends for many kilometres towards the mouth of Willie Creek, about 17 km away. It is not signposted but is long established and widely known to locals and repeat visitors. The northern beach is flat, wide and almost shadeless, with big tides that expose huge areas of sand and can come in quickly. Users are a quiet mix of long-time naturists, solo travellers, couples and LGBTQ+ visitors, spread thinly enough that privacy is easy to find. Swimming carries real risks: box jellyfish and Irukandji are possible from roughly November to April, currents can be strong and saltwater crocodiles are occasionally sighted, which closes the beach. Gantheaume Point, with dinosaur footprints visible at low tide, marks the southern end.

Casuarina Beach is the long beach of Casuarina Coastal Reserve in Darwin's northern suburbs, stretching along Beagle Gulf between Rapid Creek and Lee Point, with Darwin's main free (nude) beach on its northern part. The Northern Territory's Nudity Regulations designate part of Casuarina Beach as an area where nudity is permitted, and NT Parks says the nudist zone is on the beach north of Darriba Road, and that nudity outside this zone is illegal. The reserve covers several kilometres of white sand backed by casuarina trees, monsoon vine forest and low cliffs, with the Dripstone Cliffs at the southern end. Near the nude area is a rock formation that is a sacred site for the Larrakia people, which visitors are asked not to disturb. The southern part near Dripstone and the Darwin Surf Life Saving Club is a busy family beach. Swimming in Darwin's waters carries the usual Top End risks: box jellyfish and other stingers, mainly from October to May, and the possibility of saltwater crocodiles, so many visitors come to sunbathe and walk rather than swim.

Cobblers Beach is a small harbour beach on the northern side of Middle Head, near Mosman, in Sydney Harbour National Park. It faces north across the entrance to Middle Harbour toward Dobroyd Head and the Grotto Point lighthouse, backed by bushland and a grassy area. It is one of the two Sydney beaches named as designated nude bathing beaches in the NSW Local Government Amendment (Nude Bathing) Act 1996, and the national parks service describes it as a designated nude bathing area. Nudity is allowed on the sand and in the water only; clothing is required in the surrounding bushland and on the grassed area directly behind the beach. The water is usually calm and good for snorkelling and paddling, though the beach is unpatrolled and can have rip currents, and stingrays live in the shallows. It is popular with Sydney's naturists and gay community on summer weekends.

Cow Bay Beach is on the Daintree coast of Far North Queensland, north of the Daintree River ferry on the road to Cape Tribulation, about two hours' drive from Cairns. The beach is a sweep of sand backed by rainforest, and at high tide rocky spurs divide it into three sections that join up at low tide. Nude bathers traditionally use the third, northernmost section, furthest from the road end, and at low tide it is possible to walk around the headland to more isolated stretches. The beach is remote and unpatrolled. Estuarine crocodiles live in this area and box jellyfish and other marine stingers are present in the warmer months, so swimming is not recommended; most visitors sunbathe and walk. Shade comes from the trees at the back of the beach. Expect few people outside school holidays.

East Pretty Pool is a stretch of tidal Pilbara shoreline east of the Pretty Pool area of Port Hedland, on the Indian Ocean coast of Western Australia. Locals have long used it for clothing-optional bathing, and Australian Traveller reports the council approved it in 2001 as the area's first nudist beach; we could not find the council's own record of that decision, and FreeBeach lists the beach as unofficial but tolerated. Guides place the nude stretch roughly 500 metres east of the beach entry, or about a kilometre east of the Town of Port Hedland sign at the Matheson Drive car park past Cook Point; the two reference points may describe the same area. The coast here is flat, with a huge tidal range, so the water retreats a long way at low tide. It is very quiet. Hazards are real: extreme summer heat, marine stingers from October to May, possible crocodiles, cyclones from November to April and no lifeguards.

Kambah Pool is a popular swimming hole on the Murrumbidgee River in the Murrumbidgee River Corridor on Canberra's south-western edge, below the suburb of Kambah in Tuggeranong. The main pool, with its sandy and rocky banks, picnic areas and car park, is a family swimming spot; the nude bathing area lies immediately downstream, in a more heavily vegetated stretch of river past the end of the main pool. It is the only legally designated nude bathing area in the ACT: the Nudity (Prescribed Area Kambah) Declaration 1979, made under the Nudity Act 1976 and still in force, prescribes the area, replacing an original 1976 declaration. Signs mark the start of the nude area. Here bathers use small sandy beaches, granite rocks and river pools among the casuarinas and river oaks. There are no lifeguards, river levels and currents change after rain, and blue-green algae alerts sometimes close the river to swimming in summer. Reports over the years mention vandalism of the toilets and some antisocial behaviour in the nude area, and the reserve gates are closed at night.

Kings Beach is a small, secluded beach inside Broken Head Nature Reserve on the far north coast of New South Wales, about a 15-minute drive south of Byron Bay. It sits between rocky headlands, below a strip of coastal rainforest, and can only be reached on foot, which keeps numbers low. NSW National Parks says nude bathers may be encountered on Kings Beach, and Tourism Australia describes it as an isolated beach you will probably share with a handful of naturists and surfers. There is no separate nude section: the whole of this short beach is used clothing-optional, and it has been for decades according to naturist guides. The sand beach faces the open Pacific, so the surf can be strong and there are rip currents; it is not patrolled by lifeguards. There are no facilities on the beach itself. The nearest toilets, showers, picnic tables and barbecues are at the Broken Head picnic area elsewhere in the reserve. The national parks service asks visitors to respect others and warns that anti-social behaviour and inappropriate activity are not acceptable here.

Lady Bay, also known as Lady Jane Beach, is a small sandy cove on the harbour side of South Head in Sydney Harbour National Park, between Camp Cove and the tip of South Head near Watsons Bay. It looks west across the harbour to Middle Head, with the red-and-white striped Hornby Lighthouse a short walk away. It has been a nude beach since the 1970s and is named, with Cobblers Beach, as a designated nude bathing beach in the NSW Local Government Amendment (Nude Bathing) Act 1996; the national parks service describes it as a designated nude bathing area where swimwear is optional. The beach is tucked below sandstone cliffs and reached by steep steps from the South Head Heritage Trail. The water is usually calm but the beach is unpatrolled. It is small, so it fills up quickly on hot weekends, and it has long been popular with Sydney's gay community as well as tourists walking the trail.

Little Congwong is a small, sheltered cove at La Perouse on the northern shore of Botany Bay, in Kamay Botany Bay National Park. It lies just past the main Congwong Beach, tucked between sandstone headlands, with fine sand, calm water facing into the bay, and rock pools at the edges. It is not an officially recognised nude beach: Randwick City Council says so explicitly, while noting occasional reports of nudity, and naturist guides class it as an unofficial, tolerated clothing-optional spot traditionally used by nudists. Being small, it fills quickly on hot weekends. The beach is unpatrolled and managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. Swimming should be avoided during and for 24 hours after heavy rain because of stormwater runoff, and in June 2026 NPWS warned against swimming at Congwong and Little Congwong after a shark attack at nearby Coogee, so check current alerts.

Little Diggers Beach is a small cove at the northern end of Diggers Beach, just north of Coffs Harbour on the NSW Mid North Coast, within Coffs Coast Regional Park. NSW National Parks describes it as an unofficial nude bathing beach, and Destination NSW's guide to Coffs Coast beaches calls it a secluded, unofficial nudist beach. It is separated from the main Diggers Beach, a popular surf beach with a picnic area, playground and viewing pavilion, by rocks, so it feels apart from the busier family beach next door. The nude area is the whole of the little beach rather than a marked section. The beach faces the open ocean and the surf can be strong; there is no lifeguard on this cove. Visitors note that getting there easily depends on the tide, so check tide times before setting out. There are no facilities on the cove itself; the picnic area and amenities are at Diggers Beach.

Little Jibbon is a tiny, isolated beach on the northern tip of Royal National Park, just east of the village of Bundeena on Sydney's southern edge. It lies around the headland from the larger Jibbon Beach, near Jibbon Head and its Aboriginal rock engravings, facing Port Hacking and the open sea. Tourism Australia describes it as a wild spot where you can join fellow naturists, while noting that neighbouring Jibbon Beach is not for naturists. Naturist guides call it the most secluded nude beach in Sydney; even on a busy day only a handful of people are there. The whole of the little beach is used nude; there is no marked section. It is a narrow strip of sand backed by bush and rocks, with no facilities, no shade structures and no lifeguards. Opinions differ about its status: some bushwalking notes insist it is not a nudist beach, and it is not one of the legally designated nude beaches in NSW (Werrong Beach, further south in the same park, is).

Maslin Beach (locally 'Maslins') is a roughly 3 km sweep of sand on Gulf St Vincent, about 40 km south of Adelaide's city centre in the City of Onkaparinga. It runs from the Maslin Beach township in the north to Blanche Point in the south and is backed by tall eroded cliffs banded in ochre, white and red sands, one of the most photographed coastlines near Adelaide. In February 1975 the southern part of the beach was declared Australia's first legal nude beach, after years of people bathing nude there at the risk of prosecution. The nude section is the southern end, roughly the last 1.5 km toward Blanche Point; the northern end near the township is clothed. The beach is unpatrolled and can be windy. Each January the beach hosts the long-running Maslin Beach Nude Games (now the Pilwarren Maslin Beach Nude Games), with informal races and novelty contests.

Mauritius Beach is a long, remote beach on the North West Cape of Western Australia, on the Ningaloo coast about 21 km from Exmouth near Vlamingh Head Lighthouse. It faces the Indian Ocean inside the Ningaloo Reef, with white sand and clear turquoise water. Tourism Australia lists it as a clothing-optional beach, mentioning snorkelling on the reef just offshore and turtles that come ashore to nest. Because the beach is isolated and rarely busy, nude use is spread along it rather than confined to a marked section. Turtles nest on parts of the beach at night between roughly October and April, so visitors should keep off marked nesting areas and avoid lights after dark. There are no toilets, shade, bins or drinking water and no lifeguards, and currents can be strong. Sources disagree about its status: some say the local council declared it a nude beach in 1999 and that it is signposted from the main road, while a naturist guide lists it as unofficial and tolerated, and another source says no sign marks it as a nude beach.

Murrippi Beach is a remote beach on the western shore of upper Spencer Gulf, south of Whyalla on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, close to the Eight Mile Creek area and the Cowleds Landing sanctuary zone of the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park. Surf Life Saving Australia's Beachsafe listing describes it as a 1.2 km beach reached off the Eight Mile Road at its southern end, where boats are launched, and calls it an official nude bathing beach. It is backed by wide saltmarsh plains and mangroves and fronted by very large tidal sand flats, so at low tide the water can be a long way out; the gulf is generally calm. The isolation keeps it very quiet. There are no toilets, water, bins or shade. In 2023 the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board and SA National Parks marked out tracks and parking at Eight Mile Creek and Murrippi Beach to protect saltmarsh that vehicles had been damaging.

Myrtle Beach is an isolated beach in Murramarang National Park, just south of South Durras on the NSW South Coast, about three and a half hours' drive from Sydney. It is the park's only clothing-optional beach, used by naturists unofficially. The beach is in two parts separated by a low rock platform. The northern, main beach is the larger one and the better for swimming but has little shade. The smaller southern beach is sand and cobbles with a shallow reef and rocks, and a grassy area behind it with more shade. High cliffs and bush surround the beach. NSW National Parks describes it as a place for swimming, snorkelling, surfing, fishing and picnics; there are no facilities, no lifeguard patrols and no signage about nudity. Because it is only reached by short bush tracks, it is never very busy.

North Smoky Beach is a nudist-friendly beach in Australia. Nudity is optional.

Obelisk Beach is a small harbour beach on the southern side of Middle Head in Mosman, inside Sydney Harbour National Park. It faces across the harbour mouth toward Watsons Bay, Camp Cove and Vaucluse. The whole beach is a designated nude bathing area under New South Wales law, and Mosman Council's beach page notes it is a nude bathing area. The beach is a broad strip of soft sand backed by bush and sandstone, broader than neighbouring Cobblers Beach, with calm, sheltered harbour water that is good for swimming (watch for passing ferries and boat wash). It is unpatrolled with no facilities on the sand, although a coffee boat often calls in summer selling drinks and ice cream. The crowd leans male and is popular with gay men, becoming more mixed on summer weekends.

Pelican Point is on the shore of Lake Bonney, a freshwater lake beside the town of Barmera in South Australia's Riverland. Berri Barmera Council says the site has been used as a public swimming area, including for unclad (nude) bathing, since 1984. It is not reserved exclusively for nude bathers, it is day-use only, and camping has never been allowed. Like most of the land around Lake Bonney, Pelican Point is under native title. The council closed access to the original nude area after a flood, and later blocked it off because of its cultural significance and its unsuitability for swimming. In 2023, after an agreement between the council, the Pelican Point user group and the River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation, the council amended its unclad bathing policy to provide a new nude bathing area about 500 m north of the old spot. The record's map pin may mark the old area. A separate private business, Pelican Point Nudist Park on Morgan Road, is a clothing-free resort that requires bookings and is not the public beach.

Point Impossible is a legal optional-clothing beach on Victoria's Surf Coast, east of Torquay towards Breamlea, at the eastern end of the long sweep of Torquay's back beaches. The prescribed nude area starts about 350 m south-west of beach marker 53W and runs about 1 km south-west towards Whites Beach, from the top of the first dune to about 100 m beyond low-water mark. It is a wide, exposed surf beach of fine sand, backed by vegetated dunes and coastal reserve. The surf is unpatrolled and there are rips, so swimming needs care. Locals call the Torquay nude beach 'Nudies'. There is no shade, and nudity is not allowed in the dunes, which are closed to protect vegetation and after past complaints about behaviour there. In 2023 the land manager found that the signs marked about 1.3 km instead of the gazetted 1 km and set out to realign them.

The Port Kennedy nude beach is the southern end of Warnbro Beach, a 7.6 km stretch of white sand that runs south from Safety Bay in the City of Rockingham, about 45 km south of Perth. Nude bathing has been permitted on a signposted section of about 1.4 km at the Port Kennedy end since 1988, making it the only nude beach in Perth's southern suburbs. The beach slopes gently into clear, shallow water, and an offshore reef keeps the waves small. The afternoon sea breeze often comes up around midday and can blow sand hard, so mornings are best. There are no facilities apart from a small car park, and the beach is not patrolled. Local news has reported periodic complaints: in one dispute the council agreed to update signs after residents said the nude boundary was too close to the main access path, and the council has stressed that nude status covers the beach but not the dunes behind it, and that sexual activity remains a criminal offence.

Rocky Bay is a small, hidden cove on the south-east coast of Magnetic Island, off Townsville in north Queensland, between Picnic Bay and Nelly Bay. It is surrounded by granite boulders and bush and is known as one of the island's nude spots, where clothing is treated as optional by those who make the effort to get there. The strip of sand depends heavily on the tide: at high tide it can almost disappear for a few hours, so time your visit for mid to low tide. There are no facilities or shops; the nearest toilets, barbecues and playgrounds are in Picnic Bay and Nelly Bay. Queensland has no legal nude beaches, so nudity here is informal and carries some risk.

Samurai Beach is a south-facing ocean surf beach in Tomaree National Park, Port Stephens, about two and a half hours' drive north of Sydney. It runs between One Mile Beach and the rocky coast at Big Rocky, backed by tall vegetated dunes. The beach has been a designated nude bathing beach since 1996, and NSW National Parks describes it as clothing-optional; the national park campground behind the dunes is clothing-optional too. It is a long open stretch of fine pale sand with powerful surf, popular with surfers and 4WD drivers, and it is unpatrolled, so swim with care and watch for rips. Expect a relaxed mix of naturists, surfers and campers; 4WD traffic is allowed on the beach, so keep an eye out when lying near the vehicle track. It is the venue for local naturist club events such as the annual nude beach picnic day.

Saunders Beach is a nudist-friendly beach in Australia. Nudity is optional.

Shelly Beach is a small beach in Booti Booti National Park on the NSW Mid North Coast, in the Pacific Palms area between Forster and Seal Rocks, right next to the village of Elizabeth Beach. Elizabeth Beach itself is a calm, north-facing family beach and the only patrolled beach in Pacific Palms in summer; Shelly Beach sits next door and is reached only on foot. Destination NSW describes Shelly as a lovely swimming spot and an unofficial clothing-optional beach, and that is how it is used: nudists and clothed visitors share the sand and generally get on well. The beach is fringed by bush, with sand and rocky sections; some rocky parts are not suitable for young children or unsteady swimmers. There are no services on the beach apart from a pit toilet behind the dunes, so bring water and shade. It is not one of the beaches legally designated for nude bathing in NSW, so nudity relies on custom and tolerance.

Smalleys Beach is a nudist-friendly beach in Cape Hillsborough, Queensland, Australia. Nudity is optional. On-site amenities include restrooms, parking.

Southside Beach lies just south-west of Bells Beach near Torquay on Victoria's Surf Coast, between Bells and Point Addis, and is one of Victoria's few legal nude bathing areas. The prescribed area begins roughly level with the Southside Beach car park, about 150 m east of the 81W coastal marker, and runs about 1 km south-west toward Point Addis, from the cliff base to around 100 m past low water; the beach at Point Addis itself is not a nude area. It is a wide, very flat sand beach under high cliffs, with surf. Tides come in a long way, leaving only a narrow strip at high tide, so pick your spot carefully. There are no lifesavers at any time. Boundary signs are often vandalised or removed, and many regulars still use the stretch nearer Point Addis whose designation was revoked, so check where you are.

Sunnyside North Beach is a small bayside beach at Mount Eliza on the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay, in Mornington Peninsula Shire, about an hour's drive south-east of central Melbourne. It lies along the Mount Eliza foreshore below the coastal cliffs and bush between Mornington and Frankston, facing west across the calm, sheltered water of the bay, which makes for warm summer swimming and sunsets over the water. The northern part of Sunnyside has been a legal clothing-optional beach since 1986, when it was declared under Victoria's 1983 nudity legislation; local press describe it as Melbourne's and the Peninsula's only official nude beach. Signs mark the area where the clothing-optional status applies, and nudity is only permitted within it. Its future has been debated: after complaints from nearby residents about anti-social and illegal behaviour, the shire surveyed the community in 2022. Of 4,285 responses, 3,865 supported keeping the status, although most residents living nearby wanted it removed. On 6 December 2022 councillors voted to keep the beach clothing-optional, with reviews after 12 and 24 months and a request for more police patrols, cameras and signage. Expect a mixed crowd of naturists and clothed locals, especially on warm weekends.

Swanbourne's nude beach is a stretch of the Indian Ocean coast in Perth's western suburbs, at North Swanbourne in the City of Nedlands, about 15 minutes' drive from the city centre. It is a long, open beach of pale sand backed by high dunes, which screen it from the rest of the shore. The clothing-optional section starts a few hundred metres north of the Marine Parade car park and is marked by 'Clothing Optional' signs; nudity is accepted past those signs.
