About Buchans Point

Buchan Point (often written Buchans Point) is a rocky headland and beach on the Captain Cook Highway north of Palm Cove, between Palm Cove and Ellis Beach in Far North Queensland. The secluded beach at the point has been used for nude sunbathing since the 1950s, making it one of the best-known informal nude spots in north Queensland. Nudity is not legal: Queensland has no designated nude beaches, and in 1989 police arrested 11 nude sunbathers here and charged them with indecent exposure. Nudity still happens discreetly, and the beach is popular with a local gay nude social group. Two tropical hazards matter more than the law for most visitors: marine stingers are present from October to May, when you should not swim, and estuarine crocodiles live along this coast, so obey warning signs.

Getting there

From Palm Cove, head north on the Captain Cook Highway towards Ellis Beach; Buchan Point is the next headland. Visitors usually walk from Palm Cove along the beach or park on the highway near the point; parking is informal. There are no facilities at the nude area. Crocodile warning signs must be observed.

What visitors say

Accounts describe a long-running local nude spot with a mixed crowd, including a gay nude social group. Some reviews warn that clothed visitors arriving at the southern end may be surprised by nudity. Guides repeatedly stress the stinger season (October to May) and crocodile warnings, and note the lack of facilities.

Legal context

Public nudity is illegal in Queensland, and no beach is designated for nude bathing; the Cairns Post (2019) noted designating a nude beach remains illegal. In 1989, 11 nude sunbathers were arrested at Buchan Point and charged with indecent exposure; nude use today is tolerated in practice but carries legal risk.

Naturism at Buchans Point sits under Australia's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
