About Cow Bay Beach

Cow Bay Beach is on the Daintree coast of Far North Queensland, north of the Daintree River ferry on the road to Cape Tribulation, about two hours' drive from Cairns. The beach is a sweep of sand backed by rainforest, and at high tide rocky spurs divide it into three sections that join up at low tide. Nude bathers traditionally use the third, northernmost section, furthest from the road end, and at low tide it is possible to walk around the headland to more isolated stretches. The beach is remote and unpatrolled. Estuarine crocodiles live in this area and box jellyfish and other marine stingers are present in the warmer months, so swimming is not recommended; most visitors sunbathe and walk. Shade comes from the trees at the back of the beach. Expect few people outside school holidays.

Getting there

Cross the Daintree River on the cable ferry, follow the Cape Tribulation Road north and take the turn-off at Cow Bay to the small parking area by the beach. Walk north along the sand past the rocks to the third beach; this is easiest at low tide, so check tide times. There is no public transport beyond tour buses. Beach access is flat sand but not wheelchair-friendly beyond the car park.

What visitors say

Visitors describe the beach as quiet and beautiful, with rainforest running to the sand and very few people, especially on the northern section where nude bathers go. Several guides stress that the beach is not officially nude, that clothed walkers do pass through, and that crocodiles and stingers make swimming unwise.

Nude use at Cow Bay is tolerated by custom only, as freebeach.com.au lists it as 'Unofficial (Tolerated)'; police can fine visitors if someone complains.

Naturism at Cow Bay Beach sits under Australia's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
