About Rocky Bay
Rocky Bay is a small, hidden cove on the south-east coast of Magnetic Island, off Townsville in north Queensland, between Picnic Bay and Nelly Bay. It is surrounded by granite boulders and bush and is known as one of the island's nude spots, where clothing is treated as optional by those who make the effort to get there. The strip of sand depends heavily on the tide: at high tide it can almost disappear for a few hours, so time your visit for mid to low tide. There are no facilities or shops; the nearest toilets, barbecues and playgrounds are in Picnic Bay and Nelly Bay. Queensland has no legal nude beaches, so nudity here is informal and carries some risk.
Getting there
Two routes are described. At low tide you can rock-hop around from the Nelly Bay side. Alternatively, from the Rocky Bay lookout on the road between Picnic Bay and Nelly Bay, take the rough path down to the cove. A walk from Picnic Bay via Hawkings Point lookout also leads towards Rocky Bay. Paths are rough and the route can be tricky the first time; not suitable for wheelchairs. Island buses run along the road between the bays.
Legal context
Queensland has no legally designated nude beach, and public nudity can be prosecuted under state law. Nude bathing at Rocky Bay is informal and unsanctioned (checked 2026), so be discreet and cover up if others object.
Naturism at Rocky Bay sits under Australia's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
