2 Mai Nudist Beach

Informal

The nude beach at 2 Mai is the southern end of the village beach in 2 Mai, a small fishing village in Mangalia municipality on Romania's southern Black Sea coast, about 5 km south of Mangalia and just north of Vama Veche and the Bulgarian border. Since the communist era this stretch, south of the main clothed beach and towards the open shore between 2 Mai and Vama Veche, has been a gathering place for Romanian naturists, and the southern part of the beach was once a naturist camping area. It remains a low-key, traditional spot rather than a resort beach: a narrow but long strip with sand higher up and rocky patches near the waterline, warm, shallow, usually calm water, and seaweed after storms. Regulars are long-time naturists, couples, solo travellers, artists and tent campers, and the crowd swells on summer weekends. There are no sunbeds, bars, toilets or showers on the nude section, and no signs marking where clothing becomes optional, so first-timers simply walk south until nudity becomes common. A 2022 Romanian article argued that the clearly nude areas at 2 Mai and Vama Veche have shrunk, with the strip between the two villages now the most private option.

Costinesti main beach

Informal

Costinești, about 30 km south of Constanța, is Romania's best-known youth resort, with a busy main beach of sunbeds, bars and summer festivals. The nude spot associated with it is not the main beach itself but a small stretch at the resort's northern end, known locally as Golful Francezului (the Frenchman's Bay), towards the rusting wreck of the Greek cargo ship Evangelia, which ran aground off the northern beach in 1968 and has become the resort's landmark. Romanian media have described nude sunbathing near the wreck since at least the mid-2000s, and a 2022 article still listed Golful Francezului as a small but usable option for nudists. The beach is sand, with the Black Sea typically warm and shallow in high summer. The area is affected by a major (about 78 million euro) beach-widening and breakwater project along the Costinești coast, due for completion in 2026, which may have changed the shoreline near the wreck. Expect a small, informal nude area next to a very crowded resort, rather than a dedicated naturist beach; the main beach remains textile.

Eforie Sud Beach

Unofficial

Eforie Sud is the smaller and quieter of the two Eforie resorts on Romania's Black Sea coast, about 15 km south of Constanța, set on the strip of land between the sea and salt Lake Techirghiol. The nude beach associated with it is 'La Hamace' ('at the hammocks'), a stretch of sand on the boundary between Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud, away from the main resort fronts. Romanian naturists interviewed by the press describe it as a dedicated nudist beach and call it legendary; it has its own bar, umbrellas and sunbeds, which makes it unusual among Romania's mostly wild nude spots. It is said to be popular with LGBT visitors. The coast here is a wide, fine-sand beach with a gently shelving sea, and the Eforie beaches were artificially widened in a coastal protection project begun in 2021, so the shoreline layout may differ from older descriptions. Nudism inside the resorts themselves is not accepted, so keep to the recognised section.

Plaja Sfântu Gheorghe

Informal

Sfântu Gheorghe beach stretches along the Black Sea near the mouth of the Sfântu Gheorghe arm, the oldest branch of the Danube, in the south-east of the Danube Delta. The fishing village of the same name has no road link, so the beach is one of the most remote on the Romanian coast: a long, wild strip of fine sand backed by dunes and reed beds. A 2022 Romanian article lists it among the beaches where nudists can still bathe, describing it as long and welcoming, with the difficult journey keeping numbers low and giving privacy to those who want to swim nude. Nude bathing happens on quieter stretches away from the village access point; there are no signs or facilities. Parts of the shore near the river mouth are strictly protected nature zones that visitors may not enter, so keep to the open public beach.

Plaja Sulina

Informal

Sulina beach lies on the Black Sea at the mouth of the Sulina arm of the Danube, at the eastern tip of Romania and inside the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. It is a wide, natural beach of fine sand a short distance from the small port town of Sulina, which can only be reached by water. Because getting here takes hours by boat from Tulcea, the beach is much quieter than the resorts of the southern Romanian coast, and long stretches of it are wild. A 2022 Romanian article on nude beaches says that bathers at Sulina tend to swim without costumes and that the beach is never crowded; nude bathing happens on the emptier stretches away from the town end of the beach. There are no marked nude zones and no naturist facilities. The sea here is shallow and the water can be cloudier than further south because of the Danube outflow.

Vama Veche

Informal

Vama Veche is the last village on the Romanian Black Sea coast before the Bulgarian border, about 10 km south of Mangalia. Since the 1970s and 1980s it has been the bohemian alternative to the big resorts, known for tent camping on the sand, music bars and a young, free-spirited crowd, and it has a long naturist tradition linked to that culture. The beach is a long strip of sand, with rocky patches near the waterline and seaweed after storms. Today the central part in front of the village is busy, commercial and textile. Nude bathing continues by custom at the edges: around the Cherhana fishing point, where campers pitch tents and often go nude, and especially on the stretch of shore running north toward 2 Mai, which Romanian press now calls the best option for privacy. Naturists and local press agree that the nude area has shrunk markedly as the village has grown, and there are no signs showing where it begins. Expect a mixed crowd and plenty of clothed walkers passing through.

Laws & local rules in Romania

Romania has no explicit national law prohibiting nudism, though there is an absence of specific regulation. While public nudity is generally not forbidden, local ordinances in coastal municipalities may restrict it. The legal status remains tolerant but informal, lacking dedicated legal recognition.
