About Vama Veche
Vama Veche is the last village on the Romanian Black Sea coast before the Bulgarian border, about 10 km south of Mangalia. Since the 1970s and 1980s it has been the bohemian alternative to the big resorts, known for tent camping on the sand, music bars and a young, free-spirited crowd, and it has a long naturist tradition linked to that culture. The beach is a long strip of sand, with rocky patches near the waterline and seaweed after storms. Today the central part in front of the village is busy, commercial and textile. Nude bathing continues by custom at the edges: around the Cherhana fishing point, where campers pitch tents and often go nude, and especially on the stretch of shore running north toward 2 Mai, which Romanian press now calls the best option for privacy. Naturists and local press agree that the nude area has shrunk markedly as the village has grown, and there are no signs showing where it begins. Expect a mixed crowd and plenty of clothed walkers passing through.
Getting there
Vama Veche is on the DN39/E87 coast road south of Constanța via Mangalia (about 55 km). In summer, buses and minibuses run from Constanța and Mangalia; the nearest train station is Mangalia. Parking is on village streets and in informal paid lots, which fill on summer weekends. From the village, walk down to the beach and head north along the sand toward 2 Mai for the quieter, nude-tolerant stretch. There is no accessible route onto the nude areas.
What visitors say
Naturists interviewed by Romanian media say the nude areas at Vama Veche have shrunk and the village is no longer quiet, with the strip toward 2 Mai now the most private choice. Campers near the Cherhana are reported to bathe nude. Visitors describe a lively, crowded beach in high summer with loud bars at night and many tents, and media stories have described tension between nudists and clothed families when the two mix.

Legal context
Romania has no legal framework for designated nude beaches, and obscene acts in public can be fined as minor offences under Law 61/1991 on public order. The Vama Veche nude areas exist only by local custom and have never been fenced or signposted by the town hall; press reports note that nudism is not accepted in the busy resort area itself (checked 2026).
Naturism at Vama Veche sits under Romania's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Is Vama Veche a nudist beach?
Partly, by custom: the central beach is textile, but nude bathing is common at the edges, especially toward 2 Mai and near the Cherhana.
Is it legal?
There is no official nude beach in Romania. Nudism is tolerated in customary areas, but public indecency can be fined, so stay away from the busy central beach.

Where else can I go nearby?
The stretch between Vama Veche and 2 Mai, and the southern end of the 2 Mai beach.
