About 2 Mai Nudist Beach
The nude beach at 2 Mai is the southern end of the village beach in 2 Mai, a small fishing village in Mangalia municipality on Romania's southern Black Sea coast, about 5 km south of Mangalia and just north of Vama Veche and the Bulgarian border. Since the communist era this stretch, south of the main clothed beach and towards the open shore between 2 Mai and Vama Veche, has been a gathering place for Romanian naturists, and the southern part of the beach was once a naturist camping area. It remains a low-key, traditional spot rather than a resort beach: a narrow but long strip with sand higher up and rocky patches near the waterline, warm, shallow, usually calm water, and seaweed after storms. Regulars are long-time naturists, couples, solo travellers, artists and tent campers, and the crowd swells on summer weekends. There are no sunbeds, bars, toilets or showers on the nude section, and no signs marking where clothing becomes optional, so first-timers simply walk south until nudity becomes common. A 2022 Romanian article argued that the clearly nude areas at 2 Mai and Vama Veche have shrunk, with the strip between the two villages now the most private option.
Getting there
Reach 2 Mai on the DN39/E87 coastal road from Constanța via Mangalia (about 50 km); in summer, buses and minibuses run Constanța-Mangalia-2 Mai-Vama Veche. Park on village streets or small informal lots (limited in July-August). From the centre of 2 Mai, walk 3-5 minutes down to the beach on unpaved paths and continue south along the sand past the main beach. No wheelchair-accessible route onto the nude section.
What visitors say
Visitors value 2 Mai for its long-standing, authentic naturist tradition, the long shoreline, calm warm water and the freedom to camp on the beach. Opinions are mixed overall: complaints include crowding on weekends, litter, seaweed, no facilities, no signs for newcomers and some security worries at night. Some feel the nude zone has shrunk in recent years and suggest heading towards the stretch between 2 Mai and Vama Veche for more privacy. It suits people happy with a basic, rustic beach rather than sunbed-style service.

Legal context
Romania has no legal framework for designated naturist beaches; obscene acts in public can be fined as minor offences under Law 61/1991 on public order. The 2 Mai nude area exists only by local custom and has never been fenced or signposted by the municipality (BZI, 2015); occasional media complaints about nudity near children have not led to a formal ban.
Naturism at 2 Mai Nudist Beach sits under Romania's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
