About Plaja Sfântu Gheorghe
Sfântu Gheorghe beach stretches along the Black Sea near the mouth of the Sfântu Gheorghe arm, the oldest branch of the Danube, in the south-east of the Danube Delta. The fishing village of the same name has no road link, so the beach is one of the most remote on the Romanian coast: a long, wild strip of fine sand backed by dunes and reed beds. A 2022 Romanian article lists it among the beaches where nudists can still bathe, describing it as long and welcoming, with the difficult journey keeping numbers low and giving privacy to those who want to swim nude. Nude bathing happens on quieter stretches away from the village access point; there are no signs or facilities. Parts of the shore near the river mouth are strictly protected nature zones that visitors may not enter, so keep to the open public beach.
Getting there
Boats run from Tulcea down the Sfântu Gheorghe channel to the village (several hours by the slow ferry, less by fast boat in summer). From the village, the beach is a few kilometres away by a sandy track; in season, local tractors or vans shuttle visitors, or you can walk. A Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve access permit is required. Not wheelchair accessible.
Legal context
Romania has no legal framework for designated nude beaches; obscene acts in public can be fined as minor offences under Law 61/1991 on public order. Sfântu Gheorghe has no designated nude zone; nude bathing is informal on remote parts of the beach (checked 2026). Strictly protected reserve sectors along this coast are closed to all visitors.
Naturism at Plaja Sfântu Gheorghe sits under Romania's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
