Naturism in Portugal
Portugal has a progressive legal framework permitting naturism at designated beaches and resorts. The Federação Portuguesa de Naturismo (Portuguese Naturist Federation, FPN) was founded on 1 March 1974, shortly after the democratic revolution. Portugal recognises and legally permits non-sexual public nudity in designated official naturist areas. Nine official nude beaches are designated across Portugal, including locations in the Algarve, Alentejo, and Ribatejo regions. No criminal penalties apply to nudity within these official designated areas.

Officially DesignatedPraia dos Alteirinhos is the first beach south of Zambujeira do Mar on the Alentejo coast, within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park in the municipality of Odemira. It is a wide sandy beach closed in by a tall dark schist cliff, with rock outcrops that appear and disappear with the tide, so the usable sand varies a lot between low and high water. The Odemira municipal assembly approved it as a naturist beach in April 2008, and it remains one of only two official naturist beaches in the Alentejo (with Malhão). The beach is undeveloped, and its wild setting attracts both nude bathers and clothed families who come for the quiet. The Atlantic here is cold and can be rough, with strong currents. Being so close to Zambujeira, it gets busy in August, especially around the village's summer festival.
Praia da Adiça
Officially DesignatedPraia da Adiça is an officially recognised naturist beach on the long Atlantic strand south of Lisbon, in the municipality of Almada, just beyond the fishing settlement of Fonte da Telha. Locals also call it Praia da NATO, after the military installation on the clifftop above. The beach is a roughly 1.4 km stretch of open sand backed by the fossil cliffs and pine forest of the Mata dos Medos protected area, with no buildings at beach level. Almada's municipal assembly approved it as a naturist beach on 26 June 2015, which made Almada the first Portuguese municipality with two official naturist beaches (the other is Bela Vista further north). The legally naturist zone starts about 50 metres before the end of the dirt road that vehicles can use, and runs south from there. The beach has no infrastructure: no bars, toilets, lifeguards or shade, so you need to bring everything. Since 2019 the naturist association Alma Naturista has organised the Cross Almada Naturista here, an 8 km nude run on the sand, usually held at low tide. It is a quiet, spacious beach compared with the busy stretches nearer Caparica.
Praia da Barreta (Ilha Deserta)
Officially DesignatedPraia da Barreta is the ocean beach of Ilha da Barreta, better known as Ilha Deserta, an uninhabited barrier island about 11 km long in the Ria Formosa Natural Park south of Faro. It includes Cabo de Santa Maria, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal. A section of the beach was approved as an official naturist beach by Faro's municipal assembly on 28 February 2011, and it is on the Portuguese naturist federation's list of official beaches. The naturist zone is at the western end of the island, beyond the end of the wooden boardwalk that leads from the boat landing across the dunes. The beach is fine, pale sand with clear Atlantic water that is relatively warm for Portugal in summer. Near the landing there is a single restaurant, Estaminé, open since 1987, and in summer the main beach has lifeguards and parasol and sunbed rental; none of this extends to the naturist end, which is quiet and spacious. Because getting there costs a boat fare and some walking, naturists are fairly few, and you may share the sand mostly with clothed visitors walking along the shore.
Praia da Bela Vista
Officially DesignatedPraia da Bela Vista is Portugal's oldest official naturist beach, on the Costa da Caparica coast in the municipality of Almada, south of Lisbon. Almada's municipal assembly approved it on 21 February 1995. It lies on the long sandy strand that runs from Caparica towards Fonte da Telha, below the protected fossil cliffs, and is widely known as "Dezanove" (19), after the old numbered stops of the beach train that used to run along this coast. The naturist zone begins about 400 metres from the Casa da Praia restaurant, which serves traditional Portuguese food and snacks near the beach. The beach is open sand facing the Atlantic, part of a strand that runs for many kilometres. It is one of the best-known gay beaches in Europe and has a large gay male crowd, alongside straight naturists and couples; cruising goes on in the dunes and woods behind the beach, which some visitors will want to know about before choosing where to sit. The naturist association Alma Naturista occasionally holds nude yoga sessions here.
Praia das Adegas
Officially DesignatedPraia das Adegas is a small cove on the Atlantic west coast of the Algarve, immediately south of the large beach of Odeceixe Mar in the municipality of Aljezur, inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. It is one of Portugal's nine official naturist beaches: the Federação Portuguesa de Naturismo lists it as approved by the Aljezur municipal assembly on 19 November 2004, and it is the only official one on the Algarve's west coast. The whole cove is naturist, separated from the clothed beach at Odeceixe by a rocky headland, with tall dark schist cliffs behind fine sand. It is far smaller and quieter than its neighbour, and there are no buildings on it. The Atlantic here brings real surf and currents, so take swimming seriously. According to the federation, the beach is supervised during the bathing season and has rubbish collection.
Praia do Homem Nu
Officially DesignatedPraia do Homem Nu is the naturist stretch of Ilha de Tavira, the long sand barrier island of the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the eastern Algarve. It begins west of Praia do Barril and continues toward the Fuzeta inlet, giving several kilometres of open, flat golden sand backed by low dunes, with the calm, comparatively warm water typical of the Algarve's south coast. The name ('nude man beach') is tied to a local story about a shipwrecked sailor washing ashore without clothes. It was approved as an official naturist beach in 2004 and is on the Portuguese Naturist Federation's list. Because the nearest facilities are at Barril, the further you walk the emptier it gets; the area nearest Barril is where most naturists settle. There are no services on the naturist section itself, so bring water, food and shade.

Naturist culture
Portugal has experienced a significant revival of organised naturism since 1974. The Federação Portuguesa de Naturismo coordinates naturist activities, beach designations, and community building. Portuguese society maintains a fairly relaxed attitude toward nudism compared to other European nations. The naturism movement in Portugal is growing, with increasing public support and official recognition of naturist beaches.
