About Praia do Homem Nu
Praia do Homem Nu is the naturist stretch of Ilha de Tavira, the long sand barrier island of the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the eastern Algarve. It begins west of Praia do Barril and continues toward the Fuzeta inlet, giving several kilometres of open, flat golden sand backed by low dunes, with the calm, comparatively warm water typical of the Algarve's south coast. The name ('nude man beach') is tied to a local story about a shipwrecked sailor washing ashore without clothes. It was approved as an official naturist beach in 2004 and is on the Portuguese Naturist Federation's list. Because the nearest facilities are at Barril, the further you walk the emptier it gets; the area nearest Barril is where most naturists settle. There are no services on the naturist section itself, so bring water, food and shade.
Getting there
Drive to Pedras d'El Rei (Santa Luzia, Tavira), where there is a large car park. Cross the footbridge over the lagoon, then take the little tourist train or walk the boardwalk beside the tracks to Praia do Barril (train roughly 8:00-19:00 in summer). From Barril, walk west along the sand for about 1 km to the naturist section. The western end can also be reached by water taxi from Fuzeta. The sand walk is flat but unshaded; not accessible for wheelchairs beyond Barril.
