About Praia da Adiça
Praia da Adiça is an officially recognised naturist beach on the long Atlantic strand south of Lisbon, in the municipality of Almada, just beyond the fishing settlement of Fonte da Telha. Locals also call it Praia da NATO, after the military installation on the clifftop above. The beach is a roughly 1.4 km stretch of open sand backed by the fossil cliffs and pine forest of the Mata dos Medos protected area, with no buildings at beach level. Almada's municipal assembly approved it as a naturist beach on 26 June 2015, which made Almada the first Portuguese municipality with two official naturist beaches (the other is Bela Vista further north). The legally naturist zone starts about 50 metres before the end of the dirt road that vehicles can use, and runs south from there. The beach has no infrastructure: no bars, toilets, lifeguards or shade, so you need to bring everything. Since 2019 the naturist association Alma Naturista has organised the Cross Almada Naturista here, an 8 km nude run on the sand, usually held at low tide. It is a quiet, spacious beach compared with the busy stretches nearer Caparica.
Getting there
From Lisbon or Almada take the road to Fonte da Telha (EN377) through the Mata dos Medos pine forest. Park on the dirt area near the NATO base on the clifftop; parking is informal and free. From the cliff edge, head right towards the forest and go down the marked but uneven path to the sand, about 10-15 minutes on foot. The climb back up is steep. There is no step-free route, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
