About Praia da Barreta (Ilha Deserta)

Praia da Barreta is the ocean beach of Ilha da Barreta, better known as Ilha Deserta, an uninhabited barrier island about 11 km long in the Ria Formosa Natural Park south of Faro. It includes Cabo de Santa Maria, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal. A section of the beach was approved as an official naturist beach by Faro's municipal assembly on 28 February 2011, and it is on the Portuguese naturist federation's list of official beaches. The naturist zone is at the western end of the island, beyond the end of the wooden boardwalk that leads from the boat landing across the dunes. The beach is fine, pale sand with clear Atlantic water that is relatively warm for Portugal in summer. Near the landing there is a single restaurant, Estaminé, open since 1987, and in summer the main beach has lifeguards and parasol and sunbed rental; none of this extends to the naturist end, which is quiet and spacious. Because getting there costs a boat fare and some walking, naturists are fairly few, and you may share the sand mostly with clothed visitors walking along the shore.

Getting there

The island is reachable only by boat. Animaris runs ferries from the Cais das Portas do Mar pier in Faro old town; the trip crosses the Ria Formosa lagoon; check current timetables and fares, as returns run at set times. Stay dressed on the boat. From the landing, follow the boardwalk across the dunes to the beach and walk west along the sand beyond its end to reach the naturist zone. Paid parking is available in Faro near the marina. The boardwalk helps, but the sand walk makes the naturist area hard for wheelchair users.

What visitors say

Visitors rave about the empty sand, clear water and sense of remoteness once past the boardwalk, and say the boat trip through the Ria Formosa is part of the experience. The main complaints are the boat cost and fixed return times, and the walk to the naturist end. Several note that despite the official status only a handful of naturists use it, and that clothed walkers pass along the shoreline. Bring shade and water, since services are only near the landing.
