Naturism in Latvia

Latvia legally permits non-sexual public nudity, with official naturist beaches established and recognised by municipal authorities. The Latvian Criminal Code does not prohibit nudism when practised respectfully, and several beaches operate formally as clothing-optional facilities under local governance.

Inčupe nudist beach

Officially Designated

The Inčupe nudist beach is a roughly 1 km stretch of Gulf of Riga shoreline in Saulkrasti municipality, about 40 km north-east of Riga. It runs south from Baltā kāpa (the White Dune) towards Lilaste. Nudists have used this coast since Soviet times, and its closeness to Riga makes it one of the best-known nude beaches in Latvia. The beach is fine sand backed by forested dunes. Reaching it involves a walk of about 20 minutes through pine woods, which keeps casual traffic down. Saulkrasti municipality regulates the zone in its binding beach regulations. Signs mark where the nudist section begins and ends; after vandals repeatedly broke or removed them, the municipality set the posts in concrete in 2024. In 2025 it amended the regulations to give the zone's location in GPS coordinates so visitors and police can find the boundaries. Some local parents have complained that the boundary is not always clearly visible from the family beaches.

Lielupe Beach

Officially Designated

Jūrmala's nude beach is in the Lielupe district, close to where the Lielupe river meets the Gulf of Riga at the city's eastern end. The city's tourism guide says this is where Jūrmala's nudists have traditionally gathered, and the Baltic Coastal Hiking route guide places it nearer the river estuary than Lielupe's main textile beach. Wikipedia's list describes it as a few hundred metres from the river mouth, small and often crowded. LSM includes Lielupe in its 2024 list of Latvian beaches where complete nudity is permitted. The beach is fine sand backed by dunes and pine forest. Being close to Riga and easy to reach by train, it fills up on hot weekends. Expect locals and Riga day-trippers rather than a tourist crowd. Windsurfers also use this end of the coast.

Liepāja Naturist Beach

Officially Designated

Liepāja, on Latvia's Kurzeme coast, has a municipally designated nudist beach on the city's long Baltic shore south of the centre. Under the city's current beach rules (2024) the nudist zone, D9, runs from the northern edge of the Southern Cemetery (Dienvidu kapi) to the city's southern boundary, toward Pērkone; earlier rules placed a much shorter nude stretch just south of the seaside park, so older maps and directories may show the wrong spot. The coast here is the same as the rest of Liepāja's beach: wide, fine, pale sand backed by dunes and pine woods, with a shallow, sandy sea floor. Beyond the city's main beach the shore becomes quiet and natural, with no promenade or cafés, and the nude section has no lifeguards or built facilities beyond what the city places seasonally, so bring water and shade. Dunes are protected and must not be trampled. The Baltic is cool even in July and August, and wind can be strong, so a windbreak is useful.

Ventspils nude beach

Informal / Traditional

Ventspils nude beach is a nudist-friendly beach in Latvia. Nudity is optional.

Veczemju Beach

Unofficial / Tolerated

Beach with nudist area.

Vecāķi Nude Beach (Vecaki Nude Beach)

Unofficial / Tolerated

Vecāķi, on the Gulf of Riga at the northern edge of Riga, has what is described as Latvia's oldest nudist beach. The nude section is not on the main Vecāķi beach. It is about 1 km further north, around Kalngale, just across the Riga city boundary in Ādaži municipality (Carnikava parish). The coast here is a wide stretch of fine white sand backed by dunes and pine forest, with walking trails behind. Sea breezes are the main drawback, and guides suggest bringing a windbreak or light jacket even in summer. Nudity is expected in the section but not enforced. LSM's 2024 overview lists Vecāķi among the Latvian beaches where full nudity is allowed. The area is easy to reach by train, so it draws Riga locals on warm weekends. Toilets, changing shelters and cafés are reported along the route from Kalngale station, but they can be stretched in peak season.
