Naturism in Brazil

Brazil has no federal law against nudity, but state and municipal ordinances vary. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are more tolerant, while conservative states prohibit nudity. Nudity on designated beaches is tolerated in some areas. The Brazilian Naturist Federation (FBrN) lobbies for legal clarity.

Praia Massarandupió

Officially Designated

Massarandupió is Bahia's official naturist beach, on the Linha Verde coast about 93 km north of Salvador in Entre Rios municipality. The Entre Rios council declared it a naturist area in 1999, and it is run by the local naturist association (Amanat). The setting is classic northeast Brazil: warm water, a wide sand beach lined with coconut palms, dunes behind, and small freshwater streams running down to the sea. The area is also a sea-turtle nesting zone within an environmental protection area. The naturist strip is about 2 km long, though most visitors use the first 800 m or so. Between the clothed beach and the naturist strip there is a transition zone where nudity is optional, useful for mixed groups. Inside the naturist area, being clothed is not allowed and municipal rules forbid photographing people without consent, sexual behaviour and motor vehicles. Simple beach shacks serve seafood, moquecas and drinks on both the clothed and naturist sides. The village on the approach road has pousadas, hostels and small shops. Entry is free and the beach is open every day; in summer and on Saturdays security staff manage the flow of visitors.

Praia Pedra Altas

Officially Designated

Pedras Altas is a small, sheltered beach in Palhoça, on the mainland coast about 30 km south of Florianópolis, beyond the Enseada de Brito area. It is one of Santa Catarina's three naturist beaches listed by the Brazilian Naturist Federation, and its naturist group dates from 1994. The beach is split in two, with rocks and vegetation separating a clothed side from the naturist side. The water is unusually calm for the Santa Catarina coast, with little or no surf, which makes it suitable for children and easy swimming. Both sides have a bar and restaurant. The naturist side also has a small, rustic pousada, a camping area and its own parking, so it works for an overnight stay as well as a day trip. Because the approach is difficult, the beach stays quiet compared with Praia do Pinho or Galheta, and it draws mainly regulars, couples and families. Some reports say there are separate spots for unaccompanied visitors and for couples and families.

Praia de Naturismo Barra Seca ES.

Officially Designated

Barra Seca is Espírito Santo's only naturist beach and one of the eight beaches recognised by the Brazilian Naturist Federation (FBrN). It lies on the remote northern coast of the state, north of Pontal do Ipiranga in Linhares municipality and about 140 km from Vitória, near where the Barra Seca river reaches the Atlantic. The naturist area is small, about 200 m of beach, and is run by NatES, the Espírito Santo naturist congregation, which has looked after it since 1994. This is open ocean: the sea is rough and the sand coarse, so it is more a place to lie out and paddle than to swim far. What sets Barra Seca apart is the facility the association maintains: a shared kitchen, barbecue, fridge, fresh water, toilets and showers, shaded benches, and a camping area with power. There are no vendors, so visitors bring their own food and drink. NatES reports roughly 1,500 visitors a year, and the area welcomes couples, singles and families, with separate spots for first-timers, members, couples and families. Nudity is expected inside the area and photography needs consent.

Praia Jurubatiba

Informal / Traditional

Praia Jurubatiba is a nudist-friendly beach in Brazil. Nudity is optional.

Praia da Galheta

Informal / Traditional

Galheta is a small, undeveloped surf beach on the east coast of Santa Catarina Island in Florianópolis, tucked between Praia Mole to the south and Barra da Lagoa to the north. It sits inside a protected area, the Monumento Natural Municipal da Galheta, and has no roads, buildings or kiosks: the only way in is on foot over the headlands. For more than 40 years Galheta was the city's naturist beach, and from 1997 to 2016 nude bathing there was formally allowed, though optional. That permission ended when the area was reclassified as a natural monument, and the council now says nudism is not allowed, although some naturists still use the beach and local campaigners are pushing a bill to legalise it again. In practice the crowd is mixed and on quiet days most visitors are clothed. The beach faces the open Atlantic and has rocky headlands at both ends. The Mole trail and the area near it are known as gay cruising grounds, and there has been at least one reported serious assault on the trail, so visitors are advised not to walk it alone at quiet times.

Praia da Lagoa

Informal / Traditional
