About Vlychada Beach

Vlychada is a long black-sand beach at the southern tip of Santorini, about 11 km from Fira, below the village of the same name and next to a small fishing harbour lined with restaurants. Its backdrop is a wall of pale volcanic-ash cliffs carved by wind and rain into lunar-looking shapes, which contrasts with the dark sand and makes it one of the island's most photographed beaches. The part nearest the harbour is organised, with Blue Flag status, sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bar, showers, changing rooms, toilets and an access ramp, and is used by families and clothed bathers. Nude bathing happens at the far end: walk west, away from the harbour and past the bars and sunbeds, to the quieter unorganised stretch, which guides describe as clothing-optional and popular with gay and straight nudists alike. The beach is long and rarely crowded. There is almost no natural shade and the black sand gets extremely hot in summer, so bring an umbrella and footwear if you go to the unorganised section.

Getting there

Vlychada is reached easily by road from Fira, about 11 km to the north; the small harbour and the organised beach are at the end of the road, and that is where visitors park. From there, walk west along the sand past the beach bars to reach the clothing-optional stretch; the walk is flat but in hot sand. The organised section has an accessible ramp.

What visitors say

Visitors are struck by the sculpted pale cliffs and black sand and describe the beach as long and not very crowded. The nude area at the far end is described as relaxed and mixed, with gay and straight bathers. The most common warnings are the heat of the black sand and the lack of shade beyond the sunbeds, so people advise bringing an umbrella, water and sandals.

Legal context

Greek law has no national designation of nude beaches and public indecency can be prosecuted under the Penal Code, but nude bathing is widely tolerated on remote or customary beaches; at Vlychada nudity is tolerated only on the remote western stretch, away from the organised Blue Flag section; we found no reports of recent enforcement.

Naturism at Vlychada Beach sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
