About Trafoulas
Trafoulas, also called Psili Ammos or Dragon Bay, is a remote cove on the south coast of Crete in the Asterousia mountains, about 4 km east of Lentas and roughly 70 km south of Heraklion. It lies at the mouth of a small canyon on Cape Trafoulas, enclosed by tall vertical cliffs, which is what keeps it so private. The beach is fairly long for this coast, of small greyish gravel and fine pebbles with some smooth boulders in the middle, and the white rocks around it have been eroded into sculpted shapes. The water drops off quickly and is deep and very clear, good for snorkelling. On the east side there are four caves, two up in the cliff and two at beach level, which are the only shade at midday; a couple of long-stay campers sometimes occupy one of the large caves. Cretan Beaches, the main regional beach guide, notes that the cove is known to naturists, who feel well hidden from view here, and with no road down and no facilities the few people who make the walk are mostly nude bathers and hikers.
Getting there
From Lentas, drive the rough dirt road from the harbour area at Loutra towards Krotos and park at a viewpoint just beyond the small canyon. A marked trail leads down to the beach in about 15-20 minutes; it is rough and steep in places, with loose stones, so wear proper shoes and carry water for the climb back. There is no public transport to Lentas beyond infrequent buses from Heraklion. Small boats from Lentas also drop people off in summer. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Legal context
Nudity is not officially permitted anywhere in Greece outside a few designated areas, but it is informally tolerated on remote south-Crete coves like Trafoulas (2026). No local ban, signage or enforcement reports were found.
Naturism at Trafoulas sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Frequently asked questions
Is Trafoulas a nude beach?
Not officially, but it is known to naturists and its cliffs hide it completely, so nude bathing is the norm among the few visitors.
How long is the walk?
About 15-20 minutes on a rough trail from a viewpoint parking spot on the dirt road east of Lentas.
Is there shade or food?
No facilities at all. The caves at the east end give the only shade; buy food and water in Lentas.
Can I go by boat?
Yes, small boats run from Lentas in summer, which avoids the hike.
