About Plage de San Giuseppe

San Giuseppe is a long, wild sand beach on the Gulf of Sagone in western Corsica, in the commune of Coggia, about 4 km beyond the hamlet of Tiuccia on the D81 coast road from Ajaccio to Cargèse. It runs for more than a kilometre and is backed by low dunes and dense coastal scrub, with the mouth of the Liamone river marking the boundary between the Casaglione beaches to the south and the Sagone side. Nude bathing is tolerated in a zone just north of the Liamone mouth, on the Sagone side of the river, away from the main access points. The sand is fine and the beach faces west over open water, so sunsets are good, but the sea here is exposed: the Liamone area is known for strong currents and rough water, and swimming is considered dangerous on windy days. The beach is little developed. Expect clothed walkers along the shoreline, especially in July and August, and keep to the area around the river mouth if you want to bathe nude.

Getting there

From Ajaccio take the D81 towards Cargèse. About 4 km after Tiuccia, past the Liamone beach and the bridge over the river, a track on the left leads towards the beach, which lies about 200 m from the road across small sandy dunes. Park on the roadside before the track; access points along the D81 are few, with one at the northern end of the beach. There is no paved path and no step-free access to the sand.

What visitors say

Directory and beach-guide entries describe San Giuseppe as a wide, wild and uncrowded sand beach, with naturists gathering near the Liamone mouth. The main caution repeated across sources is the sea: currents near the river mouth are strong and the water can get rough quickly, so people advise swimming only in calm conditions and staying close to shore. Access over the dunes is described as awkward, with little parking.

Legal context

Nudity is described as tolerated near the Liamone mouth; we found no municipal order designating the zone (checked 2026). In France simple nudity is lawful only where it is authorised or customary; elsewhere it can be prosecuted as sexual exhibition (Code pénal art. 222-32) or breach a municipal order. Keep to the established zone.

Naturism at Plage de San Giuseppe sits under France's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
