About Baie Rouge Beach

Baie Rouge is a long beach of about 2 km on the west coast of the French side of Saint-Martin, in the Terres Basses area west of Marigot. It takes its name from the pinkish tint of its partly coral sand, which is strongest in late-afternoon light. Ochre cliffs and green hills frame the bay, with villas on the eastern cliffs. At the right-hand (western) end an erosion arch can be walked through at low tide, and beyond the eastern point lies Trou David (David's Hole), a collapsed sea cave popular for snorkelling; the rocky ends of the beach have the best reef fish. Baie Rouge is not a designated naturist beach. Island guides say topless sunbathing is the norm and that full nudity is common at the quieter ends of the beach, especially the far end by the rocks, while local residents note it is less common than at Orient Bay, the island's established naturist beach. The beach is popular with residents at weekends but large enough to find space, and it has been quieter since Hurricane Irma in 2017. Facilities are minimal; a few businesses on the eastern side may rent loungers and serve food, so bring your own supplies.

Getting there

Baie Rouge is reached by road through the Terres Basses, a short drive west of Marigot. There is a car park at the eastern entrance; taxis are an alternative. Steps decorated with murals lead down to the sand. From the car park, walk west along the beach for the quieter end by the rocks and the arch, which is passable at low tide. There is no practical bus service, and the steps and soft sand limit wheelchair access.

What visitors say

Visitors and residents describe Baie Rouge as one of the island's most photogenic and calmer beaches, with clear water and good snorkelling at the rocky ends. Accounts agree that topless sunbathing is common, but opinions differ on full nudity: some guides call it common at the far ends, while locals in a 2025 forum thread said it happens but far less than at Orient Bay. Several note the beach has been noticeably less busy since Hurricane Irma.

Legal context

Baie Rouge has no naturist designation; nudity here is customary at the quieter ends rather than authorised, and we found no reports of enforcement. Island guides say nudity is generally accepted on French-side beaches that are not in front of family hotels, but rules vary by beach, so be discreet near other visitors.

Naturism at Baie Rouge Beach sits under France's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
