About Rullsand Naturistbad

Rullsand is a long, shallow sand beach on the Uppland coast at Skutskär in Älvkarleby municipality, about 20 km south of Gävle. It is often called the 'Riviera of central Sweden', and it runs along the edge of the Billudden nature reserve. Travel media describe it as four long beaches, one of which is set aside for nude bathing. The main family beach by Rullsands Havsbad & Camping has shallow, child-friendly water. Next to it are a campsite, an ice-cream kiosk, a restaurant, toilets, minigolf, a playground and parking. Further out along the Billudden spit the shore turns stony, and the northernmost point is mostly cobbles. The sources we found do not say which of the four beaches is the naturist one. Ask locally or walk away from the camping area to find it. The water is the brackish, shallow Bothnian Sea, which warms up in sunny spells in July.

Getting there

Rullsand is signposted from road 76 at Skutskär, between Gävle and Älvkarleby, and Rullsands Havsbad & Camping is at Rullsandsvägen 1. There is parking by the campsite and main beach. From there, walk along the shore to reach the other beaches. Paths through the pine forest of the Billudden reserve link the bays. Surfaces are sand and forest track.

Legal context

Travel media say one of Rullsand's beaches is intended for nude bathing, but we found no municipal or naturist-federation source designating it, and Älvkarleby's bathing listings don't mention it (checked 2026). Sweden has no general ban on nude bathing, but conduct that offends others can be prosecuted.

Naturism at Rullsand Naturistbad sits under Sweden's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
