About Amundön

Stora Amundön is a hilly island off Askim on the southern edge of Gothenburg, inside the Stora Amundö and Billdal archipelago nature reserve. Its trails cross grassy, rolling ground and heath before reaching bare granite cliffs and boulders along the sea, and the island has small sandy coves, rock bathing and a larger bathing place at Drottningviken on the west side. The naturist area is set apart on the south-western point of the island. Like most of the Gothenburg coast it is rock rather than sand: bathers lie on the rocks and swim from them. A hilly trail of about 4.5 km circles the reserve, so reaching the point takes a walk. Travel writers describe it as a well-visited spot used by both experienced and first-time nude bathers, and the west-facing cliffs are a good place to watch the sunset. There is a public toilet but no kiosk, so bring food and drink.

Getting there

Take a bus from central Gothenburg to the Brottkärr or Ugglegården stop, depending on route, and walk into the reserve; a cycle path also runs south from Linnéplatsen. By car, follow road 158 and Brottkärrsvägen. From the reserve entrance follow the trails across the island to the south-western point; the paths are hilly and partly over rock, so allow time and wear proper shoes. Dogs must be kept on a lead.

Legal context

Nude bathing is not illegal in Sweden as long as it does not cause offence. The south-western point of Amundön is an informal naturist area within a nature reserve; neither the City of Gothenburg nor Naturistförbundet lists it as an official nude beach (2026). Reserve rules, such as keeping dogs leashed, apply.

Naturism at Amundön sits under Sweden's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
