About Plage Naturiste de Torreilles

The Torreilles naturist beach lies at the southern end of Torreilles-Plage on the Roussillon coast (Pyrénées-Orientales), in the area known as Les Rôtes, and is the last authorised naturist beach on the French Mediterranean before Spain. The naturist zone covers about 450 m of sand between the lifeguard post and the mouth of the Bourdigou stream, which separates it from Sainte-Marie-la-Mer to the south. The beach is natural and undeveloped, backed by low dunes, with clear water that deepens quickly close to shore. Visitors are mostly couples in their fifties and older, with some singles and families; on a mid-August day in 2019 there were around a hundred naturists. There are no signs on the sand itself marking the zone's limits, so textile beachgoers occasionally wander in, and the beach reverts to textile near the Bourdigou. Wind can be strong on this coast. A family beach with beach huts lies to the north of the naturist section.

Getting there

From the D81 roundabout follow signs for Torreilles-Plage, then the 'Plage naturiste' signs for about 1.3 km to a large free car park. Two paths lead through the dunes: the left one has a hard walkway surface and a board showing the naturist limits; the right one is sandy. There is a water point at the left-hand access. The walk to the sand takes a few minutes.

What visitors say

Visitors describe a spacious, calm and natural beach with clean water and a mature, couple-heavy crowd. Common criticisms are strong wind on some days, an awkward path from the car park and the lack of clear signs on the beach, which can confuse textile visitors. Some note the water gets deep quickly, so weaker swimmers should take care. Overall it is regarded as a pleasant, uncrowded official naturist beach.

Legal context

France.fr records a municipal authorisation for naturism at Torreilles dated 14 June 1990, covering about 450 m between the lifeguard post and the Bourdigou mouth. The approach is signposted, but as of 2019 there were no limit signs on the beach itself. In France simple nudity is not itself an offence, but 'exhibition sexuelle' (Penal Code art. 222-32) can be charged where nudity is imposed on others, so nudity is safest on beaches authorised or tolerated by the commune.

Naturism at Plage Naturiste de Torreilles sits under France's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
