About Plage naturiste de la Giraudière - Oléron
Plage de la Giraudière is the Atlantic beach of Le Grand-Village-Plage on the south-west coast of the Île d'Oléron. It is about 3 km of golden sand backed by dunes and the pine forest that covers this part of the island, with no seafront buildings. The island's tourist office states that the northern part of the beach is reserved for naturists; beach guides place the nude stretch north of the village, towards the Passe des Sœurs and Passe de Trillou, well away from the main access. The southern end near the village is the busy, supervised section, with a first-aid post, a beach-access mat, surf and bodyboard schools, a bar-restaurant and toilets in season. This is an exposed ocean beach: there are waves most days, surf, kitesurf and sand-yachting run all year, and currents (baïnes) form with the tide, so swim only where lifeguards are posted. The naturist area itself has no facilities and is wide and uncrowded, used by couples, families and individual naturists in summer.
Getting there
Drive to Le Grand-Village-Plage on the D126 and follow signs to the Plage de la Giraudière car park at the end of the beach road (free). A seasonal island shuttle and bus stop nearby, and a cycle path passes within 500 m. From the access walk north along the sand for about 20-30 minutes to reach the naturist section. Motor vehicles are banned on the beach; bicycles are restricted in summer (before 10 am and after 8 pm, 15 June to 15 September). Dogs are not allowed from 15 June to 30 September. A beach mat helps at the main access only.
What visitors say
Accounts describe a long, wild Atlantic beach where it is easy to find space even in August once you walk north from the car park. Visitors like the forest setting and clean sand but warn about strong waves and currents and the lack of lifeguards in the naturist stretch. The walk along soft sand is the main effort; bring water and shade as there is nothing in the nude zone. Reports of trouble are rare; the crowd is a mix of couples and families.
