About Plage du Liouquet Naturiste

Plage du Liouquet is the last beach of the Bouches-du-Rhône, at the eastern edge of La Ciotat just before the Var border and Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer. It lies in a small bay beneath the Corniche du Liouquet, a residential road above the cliffs, with pines along the back. The beach is mostly pebbles and stones with patches of sand, and the sea floor is rocky, so getting into the water is awkward and water shoes help. Stairs from the corniche land you in the open part of the beach. To one side, a stretch below unstable conglomerate cliffs has been closed with barriers and signs because of rockfall risk; this closed section is where naturists have traditionally gathered, and some long-time visitors call it one of the largest nude spots in the area. In practice textile and nude bathers mix on the accessible part too, depending on how busy it is. On summer weekends the small open area fills with clothed bathers, while off-season and weekdays it is quiet. There is no lifeguard, shop or toilet on the beach.

Getting there

From central La Ciotat take the D559 towards Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer; about 2 km before Saint-Cyr's port turn right onto the Corniche du Liouquet and follow it roughly 400 m. Parking is a handful of free roadside spaces with many no-parking stretches; in summer they fill early. One guide mentions a town bus stop named Liouquet on the coast road; check current timetables. Access to the beach is by a long flight of steps down the cliff, then rocks and pebbles; not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

What visitors say

Reviewers describe Liouquet as a pleasant, partly shaded cove with a relaxed mix of textile and nude bathers, most tolerant when the beach is quiet. Several mention that the nude area beyond the barriers is dangerous because of falling rocks, and that summer weekends bring crowds of clothed families to the small authorised zone. Entering the water over sharp stones is a common complaint. One review reports men pestering women and couples as if it were a swingers' spot, while others found the atmosphere respectful. Accounts disagree on which side is nude, so look for the barriers.

Legal context

There is no official naturist designation at Liouquet. Part of the beach is closed by signed barriers because of rockfall danger, and the traditional nude area lies within or beyond that closed zone, so entering it is both prohibited and physically risky (signage reported 2015-2026). On the open part nudity is only informally tolerated.

Naturism at Plage du Liouquet Naturiste sits under France's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
