About Plage des Pissarelles

Plage des Pissarelles is a small rocky beach in Cap-d'Ail, between Nice and Monaco, tucked into the Saint-Laurent bay beneath the high cliff known as the Barre des Pissarelles. Long described as the best-known naturist beach in the Alpes-Maritimes, it has no road access and no signs, and is often confused with the Saint-Laurent d'Eze beach about 100 m away. The shore is mostly large rocks with narrow strips of pebbles and a few small sandy patches; people also lie on a concrete slab and the stairs. The water is very clear and turquoise, good for snorkelling, but the cliffs put the beach in shade early in the afternoon. A small freshwater spring runs near a house on the right. Visitors are predominantly men, with mixed couples too; regulars describe a relaxed, almost entirely nude atmosphere. Sundays are the busiest days. In 2019 the commune temporarily banned bathing while the access staircase was rebuilt; users reported it repaired in 2020.

Getting there

By bus, take line 100 (Nice-Menton) to the 'Les Deux Tunnels' stop and use the stairs near no. 160 to join the coastal path down to the beach. By car, enter Cap-d'Ail from Nice past Eze-Bord-de-Mer and the tunnels; opposite the car centre is the private Lotissement des Pissarelles, open to pedestrians only. Walk down its steep road, then a cliff path and long stairs (about 10-20 minutes). Parking is a handful of roadside spaces and very hard to find. Not accessible for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

Regulars describe a calm, human-scale and almost entirely nude cove with beautiful clear water, worth the hard walk. Common complaints: very difficult parking, rocks with little comfortable space to lie down, few or no toilets, and a crowd dominated by men, with some unwanted attention reported though usually without insistence. Some mention litter and busy Sundays, and one suspected being filmed from above. Bring water shoes, snorkel gear and water.

Legal context

France.fr mentions a naturist beach at Cap d'Ail between Monaco and Nice but does not name it or give an authorisation; no municipal decree was found. In summer 2019 the commune banned bathing here until the access staircase was repaired, with police checks reported. In France simple nudity is not itself an offence, but 'exhibition sexuelle' (Penal Code art. 222-32) can be charged where nudity is imposed on others, so nudity is safest on beaches authorised or tolerated by the commune.

Naturism at Plage des Pissarelles sits under France's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Researched 24 October 2026. No official source confirms naturist status, so treat it as unverified.
