About Plage de Pen Bron

Pen Bron is a sandy spit at the southern end of La Turballe in Loire-Atlantique, running towards Le Croisic between the Atlantic and the Guérande salt marshes. Its dune system is the most remarkable on the department's coast; it is a classified site and part of Natura 2000, and part of the dune belongs to the Conservatoire du Littoral. Naturism has been practised here since at least the 1970s on the ocean-side stretch level with the salt marshes, away from the hélio-marin centre near the tip, where swimming is banned because of strong currents at the Pointe de Pen Bron. The beach is fine sand with some rocks, sheltered from westerly winds by the dunes, and has no facilities. Several visitors in 2015 reported that the naturist zone was shortened to make room for a kitesurf zone, so the nude stretch is now a few hundred metres long. The crowd is mostly couples and regulars, with a noticeable share of single men.

Getting there

From La Turballe port, follow signs for Pen Bron. In season, cars cannot drive to the end of the spit, so park at the Lancly car park on Boulevard de la Grande Falaise; it fills up in July and August. From there it is about 1 km on foot through the pine forest and along marked side paths to the beach, with gentle slopes. Stay on the marked paths: the dunes are being restored and trampling is restricted.

What visitors say

Long-time visitors describe a wild, beautiful dune beach with fine sand and a calm, respectful naturist culture going back decades. Recurring complaints are the saturated car park in summer, the shrinking of the nude zone for kitesurfing (2015), and single men approaching couples or watching from the dunes; a few women report feeling uncomfortable, while others saw no problems. Swimming can be awkward because of currents, seaweed and rocks.

Legal context

Nudity is tolerated on the stretch near the salt marshes; we found no municipal by-law or official listing. Swimming is banned near the hélio-marin centre and at the Pointe because of currents, and the dunes are a protected site where access is restricted (Cap Atlantique, 2025).

Naturism at Plage de Pen Bron sits under France's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
