About Plage de Pampelonne

Pampelonne is the 4.5 km sweep of fine sand on the east side of the Saint-Tropez peninsula, below the hill village of Ramatuelle and facing east over the bay. It is protected as a 'remarkable natural area', yet it is also home to some of the Riviera's most famous beach clubs, from Club 55 to Tahiti Beach, alternating with long public stretches. From north to south the bay is divided into sectors: Tahiti, Les Moulins, Les Tamaris, Patch, Les Barraques and Bonne Terrasse. By municipal decree, two portions of the bay are authorised for naturism: Gros Vallat, the large northern zone reached by the route de l'Epi, where nude and clothed bathers mix, and Matarane, in the Tamaris sector at the end of the chemin de la Matarane. Guides also describe a nude area in the middle of the more family-oriented Barraques sector, and Neptune Plage, a beach restaurant affiliated with the French naturist federation (FFN), welcomes naturists from April to the end of September. The beach is lifeguarded in season.

Getting there

From Saint-Tropez or Ramatuelle follow the D93 route des Plages; signed roads lead off it to each sector (chemin des Moulins, chemin des Tamaris, boulevard Patch, route de l'Epi, chemin des Barraques, route de Bonne Terrasse). For the naturist zones use the route de l'Epi (Gros Vallat) or the chemin de la Matarane (Tamaris); searching only for 'Pampelonne' tends to lead to a private club. Each sector has a car park that charges a day rate in season; some reviewers say to carry cash. In summer a free shuttle runs from Ramatuelle village every 20 minutes, and Zou bus line 7705 serves the beaches. The Patch sector has an area adapted for people with reduced mobility.

What visitors say

Visitors describe Pampelonne as a long, beautiful sand beach with a split personality: glamorous, expensive private clubs and crowds near the main access roads, and relaxed public stretches further along. Naturist guides call it one of the classic nude beaches of the south of France, with the northern Gros Vallat zone large and mixed and the Matarane area smaller. Common tips are to search for the specific access road rather than the beach name, to arrive early for parking in July and August, and to bring cash for car parks.

Legal context

The Ramatuelle tourist office states that a municipal decree authorises naturism on two portions of Pampelonne bay, Gros Vallat and Matarane (2026), and that it is also tolerated in the coves of Canadel. Elsewhere on the beach, nudity is not authorised; nudity outside designated areas can be prosecuted under French law. Dogs on leads are allowed on the beach.

Naturism at Plage de Pampelonne sits under France's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
