About Plage naturelle de Maguelone

The Plage de Maguelone is an 8 km natural sand-and-shingle strip on the Hérault coast in Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, a few kilometres south of Montpellier, between Palavas-les-Flots and Frontignan. It runs on a narrow lido between the Mediterranean and the Prévost and Pierre-Blanche lagoons, overlooked by the medieval Maguelone cathedral on its former island. There are no roads along it, and it is one of the least built-up beaches in Languedoc. The record marks a point roughly 2 km south-west of the cathedral, on the stretch towards Frontignan where the shore becomes mostly pebbles. Beach guides describe the beach as split into sectors: a classic beach near the cathedral and car park, a naturist stretch and a gay section. In practice nude and clothed bathers mix peacefully, and the farther sectors are almost empty even in July. The seabed drops off a few metres from the shore. A seasonal lifeguard post is about 300 m past the cathedral car park, and two private beach clubs operate on the strip. On summer days, many boats anchor offshore along the less accessible sections.

Getting there

From Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, follow signs to the cathedral and park before the pedestrian footbridge (paid daily rate in summer; prices have varied). Walk about 2.5 km past the cathedral, or use the seasonal free little train from the car park to the beach. From Palavas, the Maguelone road leads to car parks near the Prévost beach; the road onward is closed to cars in summer. The naturist sector requires a further walk along the shore. No facilities in the naturist area.

What visitors say

Reviewers describe a calm, spacious beach, especially in the early morning, where naturists and clothed bathers mix without fuss and beach staff are discreet. Many praise the quiet compared with Palavas and Carnon. Common complaints are the flat-rate paid parking, litter and cigarette butts near the car park, poor or missing toilets, and occasional voyeurs. Some note the seabed shelves steeply just offshore.

Legal context

In France, nudity is not banned as such, but exposing oneself in a public place can be prosecuted as sexual exhibition (Penal Code art. 222-32); nude bathing is therefore safe only where it is authorised or clearly tolerated. A naturist sector at Maguelone is long-established and described by beach guides; one guide calls it officially authorised, but we did not see a municipal decree or official page (checked 2026). The lido is a protected natural area, so stay off the dunes.

Naturism at Plage naturelle de Maguelone sits under France's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
