About Plage de l’Arène

Plage de l'Arène is a small, little-visited cove on the east side of Cassis, at the foot of the Cap Canaille cliffs, surrounded by pines and vineyards. The main beach is made of large pebbles and rocks rather than sand, so getting into the water can be awkward, but the seabed is rich in fish and the spot is known for snorkelling, diving and spearfishing. Nude use is not on the main cove: east of it, along the base of Cap Canaille, a few tiny beaches and rock ledges are used by a handful of naturists. A visitor in 2022 reported that the nude part was signposted and reached simply by walking east. These micro-beaches are harder to reach and sit below crumbling cliffs, and guides warn of rockfall, so do not settle directly under overhangs. Expect a quiet, wild setting with a small, mixed crowd, very different from the busy town beaches and calanques west of Cassis.

Getting there

From Cassis centre, head towards Cap Canaille/La Ciotat on Avenue du Revestel; after the stadium, the access lane is on the right after a vineyard. The last 50 m are one-way against you, so use the paid car park on the left, or the small free lot (about 20 places) reached from the Route des Crêtes. A short staircase leads down to the cove. The nude micro-beaches are reached by scrambling east over rocks along the cliff foot; there is no step-free access.

What visitors say

Visitors rate l'Arène highly for its natural setting, clear water and views of Cap Canaille, while noting the very large pebbles and tricky water entry. Only a few reports mention the nude coves; they describe them as quiet, signposted and reached by walking east. Guides stress the rockfall danger on the micro-beaches and the very limited parking.

Legal context

There is no naturist designation at l'Arène; nudity is an informal custom on the coves east of the main beach, reported by beach guides and a 2022 visitor review. The coves lie under cliffs with recognised rockfall risk, and dogs are not allowed on the beach.

Naturism at Plage de l’Arène sits under France's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Frequently asked questions

Is Plage de l'Arène a nude beach?

Not the main cove. A few naturists use the small coves and rocks to the east, at the foot of Cap Canaille.

Is it safe?

The coves below Cap Canaille are exposed to falling rocks; stay away from the cliff base. There are no lifeguards.

Where do I park?

Use the paid car park off Avenue du Revestel or the small free lot from the Route des Crêtes; the access lane is one-way at the end.

Is it sandy?

No, it is large pebbles and rock, so water shoes help.
