About Plage de la Mitre
La Mitre is a string of small coves on the edge of Toulon's Mourillon district, west of Fort Saint-Louis and facing the Petite Rade and the naval anchorage. The main beach, a former military beach opened to the public in 2004, is a short stretch of fine gravel and some sand with a lifeguard post in summer, and the coastal path (sentier du littoral) links it to smaller rocky inlets. Nude sunbathers use the area reached by following the coastal path to the right from the main access, around the former 'plage des Militaires' at the bottom of a flight of steps past the rocks. It is one of two places in Toulon cited for naturism; the other, near Cap Brun, carries a sign forbidding it. The setting is urban, with views of warships and ferries, and the water quality can suffer from harbour traffic: a visitor reported oily slicks in July 2026. It suits a quick swim from the city rather than a day out. Expect clothed walkers on the path and families at the supervised main beach.
Getting there
The main entrance is from avenue de la Mitre, down the steps beside the Météo-France station in Le Mourillon. Parking nearby is very difficult, with a few spaces around rue de la Victoire; a better option is the Tour Royale car park and a 15-minute walk along the coastal path. From the main access, follow the path to the right and go down the steps past the rocks to the naturist area. The path is uneven and stepped.
What visitors say
Guides describe La Mitre as a convenient city cove with a small naturist corner along the coastal path, used mainly by local regulars. Reviews of the main beach mention noisy lifeguards (2024) and, in July 2026, oily slicks that made swimming unpleasant. People recommend arriving on foot or by bus because parking is so tight, and bringing shoes for the gravel and rocks.

Legal context
We found no municipal authorisation for naturism at La Mitre; it is a customary use reported by beach guides (checked 2026). Toulon's other cited spot near Cap Brun has a sign banning naturism. The Toulon beaches are smoke-free from 15 June to 15 September. In France simple nudity is lawful only where it is authorised or customary; elsewhere it can be prosecuted as sexual exhibition (Code pénal art. 222-32) or breach a municipal order.
Naturism at Plage de la Mitre sits under France's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Researched 25 October 2026. No official source confirms naturist status, so treat it as unverified.

From the avenue de la Mitre access, follow the coastal path to the right and go down the steps past the rocks to the former 'plage des Militaires'.

Is the water clean?
Usually, but the cove is close to the harbour; a visitor reported oily slicks in July 2026.
