About Pite Ocean Beach

Pite Havsbad, sometimes called the 'Riviera of the North', is a large resort on the Gulf of Bothnia about 10 km south-east of Piteå. It has a kilometre-long beach of fine sand with shallow water that warms quickly in summer. The main beach is lively, with restaurants, a hotel, camping and activities run by Pite Havsbad AB. The naturist beach is at the far end of the sand. Piteå kommun's beach guide calls it Sweden's very first official naturist beach, and SVT reported in 2018 that it had held that status for nearly fifty years. There is no buffer zone between the naturist section and the textile beach, which has led to friction. In 2018 the resort asked to expand its camping onto the green area above the beach and to end nude bathing there. The municipality rejected the camping plan because it conflicted with the zoning plan for recreation, but it asked officials to review the naturist area's location and size. We found no later report that it was moved or closed.

Getting there

Pite Havsbad is signposted south-east of Piteå, about 10 km from the town centre. There is resort parking near the main beach. From there, walk along the sand away from the resort buildings to reach the naturist section at the far end. The beach is flat sand throughout. Check Länstrafiken Norrbotten for current bus connections from Piteå.

Legal context

Piteå kommun's beach guide describes the naturist beach at the far end of Pite Havsbad as Sweden's first official naturist beach. In April 2018 the municipality's ordförandeberedning (chair's preparatory committee) asked officials to investigate moving or reducing it after complaints that it borders the textile beach with no buffer. We found no record of a final decision to move it (checked 2026). Keep nudity within the naturist end.

Naturism at Pite Ocean Beach sits under Sweden's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pite Havsbad nude beach official?

Yes. Piteå kommun's beach guide calls it Sweden's very first official naturist beach, at the far end of the Pite Havsbad sand.

Was the naturist beach closed?

In 2018 the resort proposed ending it, but the municipality rejected the related camping expansion and only ordered a review of the area's location and size. We found no report of closure.

Is the water warm?

The shallow sandy bay warms well in sunny weather, which is why the resort markets itself as the northern Riviera. It is still the Gulf of Bothnia, so expect cool water outside July.

Where exactly is the naturist part?

At the far end of the beach, away from the hotel and restaurants. It borders the textile beach directly, so keep to that end.
