About Palaiochora Beach

Palaiochora's main sandy beach, Pachia Ammos, runs for about 500 m along the west side of the small peninsula town on the southwest coast of Crete, about 79 km south of Chania. It is a Blue Flag beach with fine sand, shallow water and tamarisk shade, organised with umbrellas, beach bars, water sports, showers and a lifeguard tower, and it is popular with families. Nudity is not accepted on the busy town end. Both Cretan Beaches and greecetravel.com describe a secluded section at the far western end of the beach, beyond the organised area, which is mainly used by nudists. Westerly or southerly winds can bring big waves to this exposed side of the peninsula; on such days the pebbly east-side beach (Halikia) is calmer. The rock formation known as the Horse of Palaiochora lies about 500 m from the beach.

Getting there

Palaiochora is reached by paved road from Chania (about 79 km) and has regular KTEL buses from Chania. The beach is a short walk from the town centre on the west side of the peninsula. For the nude section, walk west along the beach past the last umbrellas to the far end. The organised part has flat access from the promenade.
