About Maragas Beach
Maragas is a long sandy beach on the west coast of Naxos, about 7 km south of Naxos town, between the resort of Agia Anna to the north and the even longer Plaka beach, which begins where Maragas ends. The sand is fine and golden, the water shallow for the first metres and then gently deeper, which makes it popular with families; rocks at the edges are good for snorkelling, and the beach is known for the small 'eye of Santa Lucia' shells found on it. Behind it is one of the biggest campsites on the island, plus rooms and tavernas, so the organised parts with umbrellas and sunbeds get busy in July and August. Greeka notes that nudity is accepted in some spots, away from the sunbeds; the stronger nude tradition is on neighbouring Plaka, where nude bathing has been common since the 1970s. Shade comes only from a few trees and rented umbrellas.
Getting there
Maragas is about 7 km from Naxos port. Line 1 of the island bus (KTEL) runs from the port bus station along the Agia Anna-Plaka coast several times an hour in summer; tell the driver your stop. By car, follow the coast road through Agia Anna; roadside parking is free but fills up near the campsite in high season. The beach is flat sand with no steps, though there is no boardwalk.
Amenities
Legal context
Greece has no legally designated public nude beaches; nude bathing is formally permitted only at recognised naturist sites, and under Penal Code article 353 indecent exposure that causes public offence can be prosecuted, though in practice police act only on complaints. On the Naxos west coast nude bathing is long tolerated away from the organised areas. No local ban found as of 2026.
Naturism at Maragas Beach sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
