About Le Mont Rose
Le Mont Rose is an 84 m limestone hill and rocky spur at Montredon in Marseille's 8th arrondissement, between the Pointe Rouge marina, the Madrague de Montredon harbour and the start of the Calanques. It lies within the Calanques National Park, which notes that it is one of the driest sites in France and a hotspot for rare reptiles and plants. The park's own page says the site draws naturalists and naturists alike, a link it traces to the Marseille doctor and botanist Joseph Poucel (died 1971), a promoter of naturism in Provence. There is no sandy beach: bathers use flat rocks, small inlets and pebbly ledges at the water's edge, with pine and scrub behind. Gay travel guides describe it as a long-standing meeting place for gay and bisexual men as well as naturists, with the wooded slopes towards the old bunker used for privacy. Bathing is unsupervised, the shore drops off steeply, and the park advises swimming only in calm seas.
Getting there
Take RTM bus 19 (line 583 in the evening) to its terminus at La Madrague de Montredon, then walk up onto the headland on the coastal paths; it is a few minutes to the first rocks. The coast road from Pointe Rouge is badly congested on summer weekends and parking near the Madrague is scarce, so the park recommends the bus or a bike. Paths are rough limestone with loose stones; wear sturdy shoes. Not accessible for wheelchairs. Massif access can be restricted on high fire-risk days in summer.
What visitors say
Visitors describe a rugged rocky shore rather than a beach, with clear water and views over the bay of Marseille. It is known as both a naturist and a gay cruising spot, and some guides note that activity in the wooded parts can make it unsuitable for families. Bring shoes, water and something to lie on, and expect crowded roads and buses on summer weekends.

Legal context
In France nudity is not an offence in itself; only sexual exhibition (Code penal art. 222-32) is punished, and naturism is tolerated where customary. The Calanques National Park acknowledges naturist use of Mont Rose (2026) but has not designated it as a naturist area, and park rules on fires, waste and protected species apply.
Naturism at Le Mont Rose sits under France's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Naturist status confirmed against an official source on 25 October 2026.
