About Italida beach

Italida is the popular name of Platia Pounta, a beach on the south-east coast of Ano Koufonisi, the inhabited island of the Koufonisia group in the Small Cyclades, about 2 km from the island's only village, Chora. The nickname is said to come from the Italian woman who owned the land above the beach. It is a sandy beach with a golden shore and very clear, turquoise-green water, and it is largely sheltered from the wind, which makes it a good choice on days when the meltemi is blowing. The island's beaches follow one another along the southern coastal path: Fanos, with a snack bar, lies just before Italida and Pori lies beyond it to the north-east. Greek guide allovergreece describes Italida as ideal for those seeking isolation and nudism, and says the far end, known as Mikri Italida (Little Italida), is even more secluded and is mostly used by nudists. Expect a mixture of swimsuit-wearing and nude bathers on the main beach, with nudity more consistent at Mikri Italida. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas, and the low rocky landscape offers little natural shade.

Getting there

From Chora, walk east along the coastal path past Finikas and Fanos beaches; it takes about 30 minutes, mostly on flat, exposed ground. In summer, a local bus runs from Chora to Finikas, cutting the walk. Small boats running between Chora and the island's beaches also stop nearby in high season. There are no cars to speak of on Koufonisi and no proper parking at the beach. The path is uneven and unsuitable for wheelchairs. Bring water and shade; the nearest refreshments are at Fanos.

What visitors say

Guides describe Italida as one of Koufonisi's most beautiful beaches, with exceptionally clear water and a relaxed, mixed crowd of clothed and nude bathers. The far end, Mikri Italida, is singled out as the quietest and most nudist area. Common advice is to bring your own umbrella, water and snacks, as there are no facilities, and to arrive early in August when the island is busy. Some listings wrongly show it as an organized Blue Flag beach, but the descriptions agree that there are no sunbeds.

Legal context

Greece has no national register of designated nudist beaches; nudity is formally sanctioned only at licensed naturist establishments, but on remote or traditionally nude beaches it is widely tolerated, and police generally act only if someone complains. Nude use at Italida is informal and concentrated at Mikri Italida at the far end.

Naturism at Italida beach sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
