About Hellenika beach

Ellinika (also spelled Elliniká or Hellenika) is a beach on the remote west coast of Kimolos, the small Cycladic island next to Milos, about 5 km west of the main village, Chorio. The beach is made of pebbles, the water is clear and generally calm, and the setting is barren and quiet, with no buildings or services. Greeka describes it as a relaxing, unorganized beach used mostly by people seeking solitude and by couples, and both Greeka and other beach guides tag it as nudism-friendly. Its sandy neighbour, Dekas, lies immediately to the south and is used in the same way. There is no shade except what you bring, and no taverna or kiosk. The important caveat is legal: the island's municipality has publicly declared nudism banned on every beach of Kimolos, so nude bathing here, although reported, is not permitted locally. Visitors who choose to go nude should do so only when the beach is empty, and should cover up when others arrive.

Getting there

Ellinika is reached from Chorio by a road that turns into an unpaved track towards the west coast; it is about 5 km. A car, scooter or ATV is the practical option, and visitors report that the final stretch of powdery dirt track can be awkward. There is informal parking above the beach and a short walk down. There is no public transport to this part of the island, and the beach is not accessible for wheelchairs. Bring water, food and shade.

What visitors say

The few available reports describe Ellinika as quiet and largely empty, with clear water and an atmosphere of isolation, favoured by couples and solo visitors. Guides note that the drive along the dirt track is the main difficulty. There is little information on crowd behaviour, and reports of nude bathing come mostly from guide listings rather than recent visitor accounts. Note that guide sites calling the beach nudism-friendly do not mention the municipal ban.

Legal context

Greece has no national register of designated nudist beaches, and nudity is generally tolerated only on remote beaches. On Kimolos specifically, the municipality published a notice declaring nudism prohibited at all ports, coves and beaches of the island, citing Ministerial Decision 698/1978 (reported July 2011). We found no sign the notice has been withdrawn, so nude bathing at Ellinika risks a police complaint or fine.

Naturism at Hellenika beach sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
