About Gouverneur Beach
Anse du Gouverneur is a horseshoe bay on the south coast of Saint-Barthélemy, below the hills of Lurin and a short drive from Gustavia. Steep cliffs and scrub close it in on both sides, giving the beach a sheltered, private feel. Behind the white sand there is no hotel or restaurant, which is unusual for the island. With Saline, it is one of the St Barth beaches best known for nude sunbathing. Topless sunbathing is normal across the beach. Full nudity is practised discreetly at the outer edges, especially the far ends of the bay, and the middle stays mixed and clothed. The island has no officially sanctioned nude beach, so this is customary tolerance rather than permission. Guides describe Gouverneur as quieter and more scenic than Saline and a good choice for couples. There are no facilities, so bring water, shade and food.
Getting there
From Gustavia, drive up into the Lurin hills and follow the road down to the end at Anse du Gouverneur. The descent is steep and winding. Parking is limited to a small area near the bottom of the road. From there it is a short walk onto the sand, and nude bathers head to the far ends of the beach. There is no public transport, so a rental car or scooter is the usual option. There is no wheelchair access across the sand.
What visitors say
Travel guides and visitors describe Gouverneur as one of the most beautiful and least developed beaches on St Barth, quieter than Saline and with a sheltered, enclosed feel. Topless sunbathing is widespread. Visitors report that nudity is low-key and confined to the ends of the beach, and they advise discretion. Several note there is nothing to buy on site.

Legal context
Saint-Barthélemy does not officially sanction clothing-optional beaches, and some guides say nudism is prohibited while topless is accepted. Discreet nudity at the edges of Gouverneur has been tolerated for years. A 2025 guide reported no crackdown, but rules can be enforced if people complain.
Naturism at Gouverneur Beach sits under France's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
