About Gerolimionas Beach

Gerolimnionas (also written Gerolimionas) is a small, secluded beach on the north-west coast of Schinoussa, one of the Lesser Cyclades between Naxos and Amorgos. It sits at the head of a narrow bay of the same name, enclosed by low rocky hills that shelter it from the wind even though it faces north, which is unusual on an island exposed to the summer meltemi. The beach is a short strip of fine, light-coloured sand with very clear water and a rocky seabed at the sides that is good for snorkelling. There are no facilities of any kind and no shade, so water, food and an umbrella are essential. Because it can only be reached on foot or by boat, it is one of the least visited beaches on an already quiet island, and on many days there are only a handful of people. A Greek beach guide lists Gerolimnionas in its nudist-beach section; with so few visitors, nude bathing is the norm and there is no separate nude area.

Getting there

From Chora (Panagia) or the port at Mersini, follow the dirt road towards Messaria and continue to the end of the track, where cars or scooters can be left. From there a footpath of about 300 m (roughly 10-15 minutes) leads down to the beach over uneven ground. There is no bus. Small boats can also drop visitors off in summer. Not accessible for wheelchairs.

Legal context

Greece has no general legal framework for naturism and nudity is officially not permitted outside the few designated places; in practice nude bathing is widely tolerated on quiet, unorganised beaches as long as nobody objects. Gerolimnionas has no signage or official designation; nude bathing is informal and tied to its remoteness.

Naturism at Gerolimionas Beach sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
