About Galifos

Galifos (also spelled Galyfos) is a tiny cove on the south-west coast of Folegandros, on the footpath between Agali (Angali) beach and the larger bay of Agios Nikolaos. The beach itself is small and made of shingle and pebbles, with a concrete jetty and a couple of old boathouses; the main attraction is the water, which is exceptionally clear and good for snorkelling, with rocks to jump from. The cove is sheltered from the north wind, so it stays calm in a meltemi, but a southerly can bring waves. There is almost no shade and no facilities apart from a set of very simple rooms without electricity just above the beach. Greek travel media and several island guides describe Galifos as a beach favoured by nudists, and because it is secluded and only reachable on foot or by boat, nude bathing is the norm rather than the exception, though swimsuits are also fine. There is no separate nude section; the cove is small enough that visitors share it. Agios Nikolaos, about 15 minutes further along the path, is the next naturist-friendly option.

Getting there

Reach Agali (Angali) by car, scooter or the island bus from Chora; parking is along the road above Agali beach. The path to Galifos starts from the steps at Agali beach and takes about 5-10 minutes on a rough, uneven goat trail. No vehicles can reach the cove, and it is not accessible for wheelchairs. In summer a taxi boat runs along the south-west beaches from Agali as an alternative to the walk.

What visitors say

Visitors describe Galifos as tiny and not much of a beach in itself, but with excellent, clear water for snorkelling and a quiet, relaxed nude-friendly atmosphere. They stress that there are no facilities and little shade, so water, food and an umbrella are essential. Some note it becomes rough in a southerly wind.

Legal context

Greece has no general legal framework for naturism and nudity is officially not permitted outside the few designated places; in practice nude bathing is widely tolerated on quiet, unorganised beaches as long as nobody objects. Galifos has no official naturist designation or signage; nude bathing is an informal, long-standing practice there.

Naturism at Galifos sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
